| 2651 | Pair Surrender for Slaying of Floyd Prisoner Campton Men Give Up and Are Said to Have Admitted Shooting Campton, Ky, June 30 – (AP) – John Clair and Arlie Hatton were held in the Wolfe county jail here today under charges of murder following their surrender to Sheriff Fred Stamper who said they made the simple statement they had killed R. Boyd Stamper, 40 years old, a prisoner who fell in a surprise rain of bullets in front of his home as he arrived in custody of Clark county officers for a visit to his two children. Sheriff Stamper said the men added nothing to the statement and that he told them he had no prerogative but to put them in jail. The sheriff later went to the home of Boyd Stamper, who is not a relation of his, and said he found the body “just full of bullet holes.” Asked how many shots had struck the man, Sheriff Stamper replied: “That would be hard to tell – he was simply riddled.” The sheriff was unable to say what had precipitated the trouble and did not know whether the two men and Boyd Stamper had ever harbored ill feeling. “I didn’t ask them anything much about it,” said the sheriff. Lucille got her private pilot's license late in life and really loved flying. She also enjoyed "hangar talk" with other pilots at her retirement home. Born in Combs, Arkansas, on April 11, 1931, Patsy was the daughter of Edward James Stephens and Drucilla Markham Stephens. She attended Tyler Junior College and graduated from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Patsy was one of the first faculty members of Bridge City High School. She taught for 33 years with 31 of those years being dedicated to teaching home economics and family living at Bridge City High School. Patsy loved to travel, cook, and go on shopping trips. She will be missed by her family, students, and friends. Patsy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jesse Wyatt Evans; son, Stephen Wyatt Evans and wife, Donna; grandchild, Jessica Ellender and husband, Jadon; one great-grandchild, and brother, Jack Edward Stephens. Preceded in death by her parents, James and Velma Oliver (Moore), sisters; Irene Killius and Jean Warbington, and loving husband of 60 years, Arthur Jon Solberg. She is survived by her four children; Lisa Mackey (Doug), Lora Solberg, Jon Solberg, Mari-Lynn Hay (Mark) and grandsons. Phyllis was born in Blue Diamond, Ky. Her family later migrated to Madison Heights, Michigan for new opportunities. Phyllis graduated from Madison Heights High School in 1957, where she met and fell in love with Jon Solberg. In 1973, she and Jon moved to Holly, Michigan, calling it their home for the rest of their lives. In retirement, they wintered in Old Town, Florida. Some of her happiest memories were from those years spent on the Suwannee River. She retired from Holly Schools. Her favorite part of her job was working with the children with special needs. She had a connection to the students, and loved them dearly. She spent many years in the district as the President of her AFSCME Union Local. She was a stalwart President with a passion for helping all of the local members. Phyllis loved being a grandma. Her grandsons were her pride and joy. | 2667 | Pingleton Aug. 28, 1927 - July 13, 2018 TAHLEQUAH George Gene Pingleton was born Aug. 28, 1927, in Haileyville, OK to Rachel Hendricks Pingleton and Julius Boss Pingleton. He attended Oklahoma and Texas public schools and graduated from McAlester High School in 1945. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge in 1946, he enrolled at The University of Oklahoma and received his B.S. degree in education in 1950. He was employed by Ponca City Schools to teach science at McKinley elementary school, and from 1956 to 1960, was Principal of Liberty school. He married Nora Ruth Kirk in Enid, OK in 1951, and their children are Jane Ann, Joan Ellen, and Susan Gayle. Jane & Robert Evans live in Hedgesville, WV. Joan and Gary Barnoskie live in Vian, OK and have two sons; Isaac & Courtney live in Vian and have one daughter, Brynn; Jonathan lives in Tulsa, OK. Susan & Lenny Sansanowicz live in Los Angeles with daughter, Zoe Rachel. He received his M.S. and Ed.D. degrees at Oklahoma State University. From 1962 to 1966, he was Oklahoma City School's Elementary Director. He was the Superintendent of Stillwater Schools from 1966 to 1972. He returned to the OU College of Education and taught School Administration and Public School Law. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he was the Associate Dean of the college. He co-authored the publication "Financing Education In Oklahoma," which was published by Oklahoma State School Board Association. Upon his retirement in Dec. 1988, the President and Regents of OU issued the following citation: "The University of Oklahoma Confers the Title of Professor Emeritus of Education on George G. Pingleton In Grateful Recognition of More Than Fifteen Years of Service to Oklahoma University. A Demonstrated Leader in Teacher Education Reform. He is Considered an Authority on Oklahoma School Law. For Many Years he Represented the College on the Oklahoma State Professional Standards Board, Influencing Many Issues Pertaining to the Professional Standards of Teaching in the State of Oklahoma." | 2676 | PONDER, Rovy Age 82 passed away at Mercy South Hospital in Fairfield on Tuesday, August 9, 2005.He was born on October 4, 1922 in Jep Hill, Kentucky and was the son of Ben and Cordia (Mullins) Ponder. He attended White Oak School, Red Hill School and Livingston School. A Navy veteran of World War II, Rovy served as a mechanic on military fighter planes on the USS Yorktown CV 10 Aircraft Carrier from November 6, 1942 and was honorably discharged on November 25, 1945. He was enrolled in the Three CCCS on October 14, 1940 in McKee Kentucky and was honorably discharged on March 29, 1941. He was also a Kentucky Colonel. Rovy was an active member of Hamilton West Baptist Church for more than 55 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and trips to his campsite in Kentucky. He was a member of the Sportsman Club and enjoyed target shooting with many close friends. He was a Mason and an active member of the Washington #17 Lodge in Hamilton, Ohio for approximately 50 years. He married Mattie Grace Cope on August 30, 1947 in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. He was employed at Champion Paper Company from May 21, 1941 until his retirement on January 1, 1985. Rovy leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Mattie Grace; three sons William Dallas Ponder of Marion, Indiana, Fred Ponder and his wife Jean of Hamilton, Ohio, and Larry Ponder and his wife Ada of Englewood, Ohio. He also leaves behind three sisters Christine Phillips of Dayton Ohio, Anna Lee McDanell of Bradenton, Florida and Florence Mullins of Englewood, Ohio. He had four grandchildren Cristy, Mark, Cristopher and Scott; four great grandchildren Karmen, Amber, Dean and Dagan; brothers-in-law Walker Cope (Vera) and George Renner; and sisters-in-law Laura Shepherd and Ruth Ponder. He had many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Cordia; his father Ben; his stepmother Ella; brother Curt; Baby Conley; and sister Ruby Furmon. Stamper Victim Was on way to visit children: Accused in Breathitt Killing Special to the Courier-Journal Winchester, Ky. June 29. – Report of an ambush murder of a prisoner taken to his home in the mountains of Wolfe County by his jailer and a deputy sheriff on order of the Circuit Judge of the district, were brought back here tonight by Jailer Omer Booth of Clark County and Deputy Sheriff Coebel Rice. The two officers said they ran when the shooting started and did not return to verify a report brought to them that their charge was dead. R. B. Stamper, 40yars old, indicted in Breathitt County in a killing, is reported victim. According to Jailer Booth, Circuit Judge J. Brack Howard, Royalton, of the Thirty-sixth Judicial District, issued an order for him to take Stamper to his home in Wolfe County to visit his two children 5 and 7 years old. The officer said they left the Clark County jail here, where Stamper was brought for safekeeping on April 27, and drove to Slade, Powell County, thirty miles east of here. At Slade, the jailer said, he left his automobile and, with the prisoner and the deputy sheriff, proceeded in a car with Carol Maze, a nephew of Stamper. Leaving the main road, about fifteen miles further east, they drove five miles over a dirt mountain road to the place where Stamper’s children were staying. As Stamper stepped from the automobile, with a bag of fruit for his son, Mr. Booth said, several rifle (continued on page 6, column 5) Prisoner Reported Ambush Victim (continued from first page) shots were fired and Stamper dropped to the ground. Maze shouted “They have killed Boyd,” Booth reported, and all three of them ran, becoming separated. Booth said he rain down a creek and about a mile away came to a religious gathering. Asking some of the worshipers to go back with him to investigate, Booth reported they told him it would be best for him to stay away, as he didn’t know what he was getting into. An old man on a mule offered to investigate, Booth said, and rode up the hill toward the place where they shooting occurred. He came back twenty minutes later with the report that “Boyd Stamper is layin’ in front the house dead.” Booth said he hailed a rural mail carrier, passing on horseback, and rode on the horse with him to the highway, where he hailed a tourist and rode to Slade, where he found Maze and Rice. He said the mail carried told him, “I met a man on the road back there who said he had just killed Boyd Stamper. He was carrying a high-powered rifle and a pistol.” Booth said the mail carrier said he knew the man, but did not get his name. Mrs. Minnie Faulkner, who lives near the parents of Boyd Stamper at Slade, said she was told that two men went to Campton, county seat of Wolfe county, and surrendered in the case late today. He was the son of the late Marie (Bowles) Garland. Raleigh is survived by his wife Minerva (Thompson) Bowles of East Bernstadt and by four sons, Raleigh Bowles, Jr., Theodore Bowles and Joseph Bowles all of East Bernstadt and Stephen Bowles of London. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, Vernon Garland & Jane Davis both of Annville, Robert Garland of London, Beulah Garland of Bond, Raleigh was blessed with three grandchildren, Olivia Grace, Leilah McKenzie and Layton Bowles. Ralph retired from Fisher Body, Fairfield as a General Foreman in June, 1980 after 33 years. He was also an honorary Kentucky Colonel. Ralph enjoyed family gatherings, camping, boating, fishing, RV traveling and bus tours with his wife and other family members. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Joseph) Isaacs; son, Steven (Jacqueline) Moore, DDS; grandchildren, Kristy (Benjamin) Weaver, Steven (Desiree) Moore, Jr., DMD and Megan Moore; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Weaver, Steven Moore, III and Katelynn Moore. | 2685 | Ralph W. Bates entered into His Lord's Kingdom at 5:00pm September 20, 2012 in Pt. Charlotte, Florida. He was born in Decatur, Illinois on June 22, 1922. Ralph was an extremely patriotic man who served 20 years in the United States Air Force. Prior to his service in the Air Force, Ralph enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in early 1941 during World War II. He was in training as a Tail Gunner on the Canadian Bombers. After Pearl Harbor, he was released from the Canadian Air Force to join the United States Army Air Corp. He was a Tail Gunner on the B-17 Bomber and had many missions over the European Theater. He completed his mission and then signed up for an additional mission on the B-25 Bomber. In all, Ralph completed 66 combat missions during World War II. In addition to his service in the Air Force, Ralph was a highly decorated airman; among his many decorations he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. While in the Air Force, Ralph also completed his Bachelor's Degree in Education. Upon retirement, Ralph earned his Master's Degree in Education and taught high school "at risk" students in Nebraska. While working as a teacher, Ralph involved himself in the American Legion and was asked to be a speech writer and travel coordinator to the National Adjutant. During his time with the American Legion, he was honored with meeting many political figures including presidents and popes. After finishing his assignment with the American Legion, he moved to Minerva, Ohio where he again continued to teach "at risk" high school students. Upon his retirement from teaching, he relocated to Port Charlotte, Florida and started a flag and flag pole business. Ralph enjoyed this business for many years and was very generous with flag contributions for charitable events. Due to advanced age and medical problems, Ralph was forced to retire. Ralph was a very positive gentleman. He always looked on the bright side of life and any hardships that may have come his way. He was born into very humble beginnings and lost both his parents at the age of 9 years old. Regardless of the obstacles that were put in front of him, he always persevered and rose above them. He was a loving husband and a loyal friend. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He is dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Bates, and one brother, Parker Bates from Houston, Texas. He was predeceased by three brothers, Dewayne, Ted, and Lawrence. He is also survived by 7 nieces and 5 nephews and predeceased by 2 nephews and 1 niece. He is also survived by numerous friends and family. Dickerson had parachuted to safety two months ago when the Flying Fortress in which he was tail gunner was shot down over German-held territory, were blasted here today when the former McAlesterite’s relatives were notified by the German government that he was killed in action October 8. The tragic news reached the family group here this morning at the home of the sergeant’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.V Dickerson, D street and Taylor avenue. The 20-year old tail gunner’s wife, the former Mary Sue Pingleton of Haileyville, and his three-year old son, Glen Ray, have been residing at the Dickerson home. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Cox, Bache, and Mrs. Alta Goodson of the High Hill community; two brothers, J.A. Dickerson, Dow, and William R. Dickerson, a merchant marine stationed on Catalina Island, off the California coast. Blancett Sees Attach Some time ago the war department notified relative here that Sergeant Dickerson was missing in action. Then last Friday, Mrs. Audie Blancett, 312 West Grand avenue, received a letter from her son, Sgt. Dean Blancett, in England, stating that during a raid over Germany in which he took part, he had seen sergeant Dickerson’s plane shot down. He saw some crew members ump and their parachutes open, he wrote, but could not tell how many escaped from the mortally wounded Fortress. This report had built hope among relatives that Sergeant Dickerson might be a prisoner of war in the reich. The tall gunner attended grade school here and later was a student in Haileyville High school. He was married February 5, 1939. He enlisted in the air corps here June 11, 1942, came home only once afterward. That was last April 11, during transfer from Walla Walla, Wash., to Kearney, Nebr. | 2695 | Research by Larry Hash "ol John" Hash One of the first fathers in the Hash line in the US is John. He is referred to as “ol John” in later years because of the many John Hash descendents. The first we know of this man is that, as a young man, he shows up on various tax records in and around Gunpowder One Hundred in Maryland. By the time we see him again in records, the Indian War has drawn to an end and a survey for John Hash was made in 1774 for 250 acres of land in Fincastle Co., VA [now Grayson Co., VA]. Old family relates that three Hash brothers came to southwest Virginia–John, William, and James– around 1763. Later research places John at Bridle Creek on New River. William Hash was at Buck Mountain on Bridle Creek [some 5 miles north of John] . James Hash [Hust] was placed at Peach Bottom near Independence, VA. The question of the relationship between John and William is unresolved. James Hash disappeared in a few years from all records leaving one daughter. John and his first wife had at least 7 known children. The Anderson clan relates that John Hash first married Rececca Anderson. She died about the time John left Maryland for southwest Virginia. John and his second wife had one known son. The Sturgill researchers record that she was Elizabeth Stodgil and that they were married in northern Virginia as John traveled south. She was still alive when John wrote his will in 1784. No other record has been found for her. John and other members of his family show up repeatedly on tax and military records until the death of “old” John was recorded in a psalm book. He died April 13, 1784 at his home at Bridle Creek. He was around 65 years old. He left a will which is the corner-stone for much of the research that is seen today. I personally had this will repaired and copied before replacing it back in the Montgomery Co., VA courthouse in Christiansburg. 1) He was married twice but only mentions them as first and second wife. 2) He mentions his living children 3) He describes his land holdings at Bridle Creek. 4) He lists his earthly possessions. No record of his burial exists but there is an old Silas Ward cemetery on his lands. The Wards intermarried with the Hashes and later owned the same lands as “old” John Hash. We know that William Hash, Sr. is buried in this cemetery and odds are that “old” John Hash and his second wife are in this cemetery. 99% of all Hashes in the US are descended from these two men [regardless of John & Wm’s relationship]. No real clue has been given as to the origin of the Hash clan prior to the very early 1700’s . Anyone can guess the country of origin and be as close as the next one. | 2697 | Reva C. APPLE-HOLLENBAUGH, age 85 of Middletown, passed away Thursday evening. She was born in Crab Orchard, Kentucky, February 25, 1921, a daughter of Cleveland and Elizabeth Hopkins Wilmot. She was a graduate of West Elkton High School, and an extremely active member of the Spring Hill Church of Christ. Reva worked for Montgomery Wards, then as a Buyer for McAlpin's. She loved working crossword puzzles, the Reds on radio, and being a Momaw to her grandchildren. She is survived by 4 daughters, Linda (Dale) Morton of Middletown, Janice (Dan) Collins of Middletown, Gail (Wayne) Melgaard of Piqua, Ohio, and Tracy Jackson of Middletown; a son, Mark (Tamra) Apple of Franklin; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter; 2 stepchildren, Dee (John) Martin, and Ross (Sandy) Hollenbaugh; 3 step grandchildren, and 3 step great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Ruby Rieger, Donna Roby, and Martha Gabbard; a half-sister, Annabelle Adams; and 4 brothers, Jim Cornett, Grant Wilmot, Jack Wilmot, and Frank Wilmot. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Apple in 1990, and Deaner Hollenbaugh in July of this year; a grandson, Kerry Morton; a sister, Versa Whitt; a half-sister, Marie Lunsford; and 3 brothers, Gerald, Benton, and Charles Wilmot. | 2698 | Reverend Jack Donald Smith, 88, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed April 2, 2019. Jack was born to Kirxie Kansel and Jesse Myrtle, January 8, 1931, in Cumberland, Kentucky. He graduated with a bachelors from Lee College and a Masters from Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Lucille Botkin in 1956 and they pastored churches together in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Together they raised 4 children. He leaves as his legacy 4 children: Nona Carver (Hugh), Gwen Smith, Beth Taylor (Jeff), Jack II (Lisa). He also leaves to cherish his memory 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 siblings Rodney Smith and Sharon Tibetts and many nieces and nephews that he loved. His family will remember him as a loving father with a great sense of humor and contagious smile, who loved to travel. He was preceded in death by Tyler Hugh Carver (grandson), Dexter Smith (brother) Mary Lois Hall (sister), Paul Smith (brother), Virginia Garrison (sister). Jack was a Minister until he retired in 2005 and was passionate about praying and consoling others in their time of need. He was also a decorated veteran in the United States Marine Corp. and fought in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart. He worked as director of a community agency called Progress for People that served people in Bradley, McMinn, Meigs and Polk Counties. He was a professor at Lee College and Jimmy Swaggart Bible College. He was Minister of Education, Associate Pastor and Interim Pastor at North Cleveland Church of God. A Celebration of Life and Home going for Reverend Jack Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2019 from the Sanctuary of North Cleveland Church of God with Rev. Mark Williams and Rev Mitch Maloney officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the church. In Lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made to Bless the Children Home in honor of Tyler Carver@ Church of God World Missions. The family would also like to thank Legacy Village of Cleveland for their loving care at the end of Jack’s life.
