2755 | Note on Find a Grave: Dr. John J. Dickey Diary Laurel County, KY Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Vol 10, Number 7, January, 1996. p.86. Robert Lincks or Lynx Laurel Co., June 28, 1898 My father was Frederick Lincks. He was born in Germany. Before he reached his majority he ran away from home and joined the army of Napoleon Bonaparte. He was a wild boy. I have seen his body; it was all covered with scars. showing that he had many conflicts in his young days. His father was a great friend of Napoleon and through this intimacy he got his son released. He then sent him to Amsterdam to school. After the close of the term, $80.00 was necessary to pay board and tuition. His father sent him the money to pay the bill but he took the money and paid his passage to America. Eighty other students did the same. The ship was anchored about a mile from shore. The boys were taken out in a schooner; several trips being necessary. The ship lost her course and many died of over-eating when a friendly ship found them. They lost many by sickness. (His time with Napoleon was 7 or 9 months, the voyage, either 7 or 9). When they landed in America the ship's Captain sold them for their passage denying they had paid him. James Garrard, Governor of Kentucky, bought him. He did not know he was sold for a year. He could not talk English. He learned somehow that he was a slave and he made his case known to a lawyer who could talk German. He looked into his trunk and found his free papers. He was about to leave the Governor, but he was hired for a year when Daniel Garrard brought him to Clay County to oversee Negroes at the salt works. He promised Governor to return but he never did. He worked for the Garrards whom he greatly loved. He married first Nancy Hays, had two children, Eliza Parker and Nancy Benge, Smily Davis' wife. He then married Polly Cornett, daughter of old Robin Cornett of Benge. They had children: John Lynx, Susan Stivers, Margaret Parker, Lottie Lynx married Phil Wilson, Lucinda married Lee Chestnut, Patsy married preacher Hiram Johnson, Zilpha married Charles Parsley, Robert Lynx married Eliza Chestnut, James married Jane Bailey. Next he married Louisa Robison and had three children; Susan, Hiram, and Thomas. Next he married Widow Black nee Patsy Young. To these were born, Frederick, Henry and Germany, the last a daughter. Henry married Molly Houston of Benge, where he died about 1890. He was 100 years old and had 113 descendants. They are very numerous now. My father was soon lost from his countrymen who came over with bad fever (?), nor has he heard any from them. He never wrote back to his father nor did his father ever know anything about him. ---------- Another note in this diary states "Old Ned Callahan died at the home of his son-in-law Robin Cornett, where Hays Coldiron lives now, at Benge, KY. When he was an old man, and the deer had about disappeared, he would go out in the evening by Mill Creek and build a fire and sleep by it all night. When he was old, he always wore his hunting tackle, a pouch containing flints, a pipe, and tobacco. He would put it on when he dressed, just like his garments." this information came from John McDaniel on 6/l3/l898. Another note in the diary says "Robin Cornett and his uncle Roger Cornett married Charlotte and Zilpah Callahan, sisters of the man who was hung at Barboursville for killling Newberry. They killed him for his money but only got 25 cents. Newberry was a cattle buyer. The murder was done at Red Bird, at Newberry Hill. ---------- Mountain Echo newspaper, London, KY Friday 24 January 1879; Page 3, Column 2 Born to the wife of Old Uncle Frederick Lincks, of Clay County, one day last week, a boy. Mr. Lincks is an old gentleman about 83 years of age, and has, we believe, been married four times. The old gentleman seems to be prouder of this child than any of his children, and often in his joy he will sing: "Oh how strange it seems for an old man like me To be dancing a new born babe upon my knee" It does almost seem like a mystery and we would like to know if any of our contemporaries know of any one whose progeny has extended over so many years. ---------- Semi-Weekly Interior Journal newspaper, Stanford, KY Friday 18 February 1887; Page 2, Column 4 London, Laurel County (column) -The "Judge" Lincks farm sold Monday to J. In 1802 he sold the 500 acres in VA and moved up the river to live with and take care of his father who died the following year and was buried in the family cemetery on this farm. 2759 | Note on Find a Grave: From Cemetery Records Allen HASH Cemetery, Grayson County, Virginia Headstone was moved to Fox Creek Family Cemetery, Grayson, Virginia, body remains interred in the Allen Hash Cemetery. --------------------------------------- "The Allen Hash Cemetery is above old mill on Fox Creek just north of Fox Creek Cemetery -- on the left. On October 4, 2003, [Larry Hash et al.] talked with Paul Trachy- the owner of the cemetery, and he showed us the cemetery which is on the very top of the hill above his old house. He told that some member of the Hash family moved all of the markers from the cemetery about 10 years ago [early 1990s]. He didn't know what happened to the markers. He told me that Charlie Hash owned the land prior to him. Charlie Hash had aquired the land from APCO after the dam project for the area was abandoned.. We then talked with Rex Hash [a grandson of Lewis B. Hash, b.1913]. He told that the old mill was owned by brothers, Tommy & Eck Hash. The mill was washed out by high waters. Rex said that Virginia Porter of Galax had the headstones moved to Fox Cemetery. The bodies were left undisturbed. The actual graves are marked only by Daffodils in the spring.". --------------------------------------- CHILDREN: 1 Eleanor "Nellie" Hash Ward Cox 1825 - 1909 2 Lewis B Hash 1828 - 1915 3 Rosamond Hash 1829 – 1881 4 Jestine Hash Anderson 1830 - 1902 5 John C. 2770 | Note on Find a Grave: Married to John "Johnie" Madden in the early 1920s, Minnie gave birth to 7 children of record. Their names are Mary Elizabeth (Madden) Smith, John Jr "Tootsie" Madden, William V. "Buddy" Madden, Raymond Madden, Evelyn (Madden) Corkins, Benny Lee Madden, and Anna Frances (Madden) Slagle. After the death of Johnie in 1944, she quickly married to Garland Wesley Roberts in Cincinnati, OH, to help her raise the children remaining at home. In about 1946, when son William had a daughter, Patricia, Minnie took on the responsibility of raising Tricia as well. Ann and Tricia grew up thinking of themselves as sisters. Benny apprenticed under Garland, who was an upholsterer, but quit the business shortly after Garland's death in 1967 because the business was willed to son-in-law Earnie Slagle instead of to Benny. Minnie did not survive long after Garland's death, following him to the grave only 18 months later. They both died in Columbus, Ohio, but were buried together in Richmond Cemetery, as this town was Minnie's birth place. | Lawson, Minnie Josephine (I1311)

She had three children from this union, William, Elihu, and John L. Coldiron. She married Albert E. Robinson on July 29, 1875. Note: Mary's 1st husband, Zachary Taylor Coldiron was killed during a coal strike. Info that follows is from family records. According to family members interviewed in 1968, Taylor was shot in a coal mining strike! He was a deputy to his Uncle, E.W. Robinson (Leah's husband). He had been sent down into to the mine arrest a man named Dezirn (sp?) who was down in the mine hiding out from being arrested. He was shot when he went alone down into the part of the mine where some of the more radical miners had set a camp to wait out the strike's end. Taylor felt he would be safe since he knew many of the strikers involved. He did not count on the high feelings of the men or that the badge he wore set him apart as one of the company. According to the Bible records of John D. Coldiron, he was shot on January 22, 1873 and He lived 18 days before expiring from his wounds. It is believed by the William Baker family that he was shot in the stomach. 2782 | Note on Find a Grave: She was born Feb 1843 in Owsley County, Kentucky, and died after 21 April 1917, exact date unknown as Death Certificate has not been located yet, but she applied for a widow's pension off Larkin Young's Civil War Service on the 21 April 1917, as there is an application number. The application apparently was never finalized because there isn't a certificate number issued, which leads me to believe she died shortly after making the application, but definitely prior to a certificate number being issued. She was the daughter of John W. Moore, Jr. and Lucretia Smith. She married Larkin Young, born Sep 19, 1841 in Logan County, Virginia; died Mar 19, 1917 in Owsley County, Kentucky. He was the son of John Nathan "Nathan" Young and Lucy Laura "Lucy" Fields. Larkin Young and Deborah Moore married Abt. 1860 in Owsley County, Kentucky. | Moore, Deborah (I1844)

2795 | note on Find a Grave: Thomas was born in the Watauga River Settlement, Virginia The Watauga settlement was south of the Holston River, on the Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers in the colony of North Carolina. There were three main settlements in the area known as Watauga, Carter's Valley, and Nolichucky. Most settlers came down the Great Valley through Virginia, while others went through gaps in the Unaka Range from North Carolina. The settlers believed they had settled in Virginia. However, all except the North Holston community were in North Carolina on land that belonged to the Cherokee Nation. They were told to relocate but instead negotiated with the Cherokee to lease the land. | Bowman, Thomas (I1950)

2800 | Note on Find a Grave: Wesley Anderson was born about 1823 in North Carolina. He probably died about 1850 in Grayson County, Virginia. His daughter Lutitia was born about Mar 1850 in Grayson County, and Wesley is not listed with the family for the Sep 1850 census. In the 1862 death record for daughter Dianna, the informant is listed as sister A. M. Anderson. Daughter Lutitia probably died between 1874 and 1889 when her husband Phillip Cress is listed as widowed when he remarries. In the 1970 book by Lella Gertrude Saylors, Wesley's name is listed as Cam Anderson. In the death record for granddaughter Ora A. Anderson, her father (James Campbell Anderson) has his name recorded as Cam Anderson. Maybe Wesley's middle name was Campbell. Children: 1- A. Maria Anderson (1845- ). 2- Dianna Anderson (1847-1862). 3- James Campbell Anderson (1848-1923). 4- Lutitia Anderson Cress [Crouse] (1850- ).
