| 3401 | Mallie Snowden Mallie Snowden, age 65, of Hamilton, died Monday evening at Fort Hamilton-Hughes Memorial Hospital. She was born in Livingston, Kentucky, the daughter of Ned and Grace (Morris) McDaniel. She is survived by one sister, Edith Nipper of Hamilton and one brother, Joseph McDaniel of Dayton. | 3402 | Man Is Slain Near Big Hill Earl Marcum Is Victim Of Bullet; Surrender In Case Is Awaited Berea, Ky., June 5 – Earl Marcum, 28, highway construction worker, was shot and killed today while he was at a home in the Jackson Hollow section two and one-half miles west of Big Hill. A short time after the shooting, Madison County Sheriff John McWilliams at Richmond received a phone call from a man who said he was Willie Webb of the Big Hill section. The caller told the sheriff that he had killed a man and that he would be in Richmond in a “couple of hours” to surrender. Webb had been employed as night watchman on the highway project now under way near Big Hill. His home is in the Red Lick section. Marcum, who was a son of James Will Marcum, Big Hill, is survived by his wife, one child and his parents. His body was brought to Berea. The cause of the fatal shooting had not been learned by Berea or Madison county officers early this afternoon. | 3403 | Man Struck By Propeller, Killed After Hamilton Airport Landing Fred B. Kelley, 64, 1993 Dixie Hwy., retired Champion Papers employe, was injured fatally about 6:10 p.m. Friday when he walked or fell into the propeller of an airplane from which he had just alighted at Hamilton Airport. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital where he was taken by the fire department emergency squad. Dr. Garret J. Boone, Butler County coroner, said Kelley suffered severe head and neck injuries. Don Schirmer, 580 Hermany Ave., pilot of the airplane, told police and state highway patrolmen he and Kelley had just returned to the airport from a flight to Cleveland. He said a power failure in the airplane left them without light or radio power and that Kelley held a flashlight so he could see the instruments in the aircraft to make a landing upon arrival at the airport on Bobmeyer Road. Schirmer said when the aircraft came to a stop in front of the main hanger of the airport, Kelley told him he would check with airport officials to learn where they wanted the airplane parked so the electrical problem could be corrected. He said it was dark and he did not see whether the victim walked too close to the propeller or slipped and fell. Schirmer said Kelley had been working for him and had accompanied him on other flights. Mr. Kelley was born in Livingston, Ky., a son of John and Winnie Ponder Kelley, received his education in public schools in the area. A resident of Hamilton 30 years, he was employed at U.S. Plywood Champion Papers Inc. for 20 years, retiring in 1962. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfield and a veteran of World Wart II, serving from April 1, 1943 until Sept. 25, 1945 as a corporal in the U.S. Army quartermaster corps. He received the EAME Theater ribbon with six bronze starts. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mattie French Kelley; five sisters, Mrs. Albert (Lillie) Marcum, Hamilton, Mrs. Harry (Brilla) Kelley, Trenton, Mrs. Mae Dyer, Lockland, Mrs. Russell (Maude) Mullins, Livingston, Ky., Mrs. Richard (Ruth) Fritts), Mt. | 3404 | Man who apparently set self on fire dies A 59-year-old Lexington man died yesterday, two days after apparently setting himself on fire, according to Fayette County coroner’s office. Benny Lee Madden of Carlisle Avenue was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m. at University of Kentucky Hospital. The incident occurred about 9:10 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Madden was burned over 95 percent of his body. The death was being investigated as a suicide, according to the coroner’s office. | 3420 | Mangled Body Of Stock Man Found In Lot Stanford, Ky., Nov.13 (Special) – The mangled body of George W. Spivey, 64, Crab Orchard stock trader, was found late today in a barn lot near his home. Acting Coroner T.D. Newland said following an inquest that death was from an unknown cause. Newland advanced the theory, however, that Spivey had suffered a heart attack and that pigs in the lot had attacked him. A team of horse was in the lot and Newland said it was possible that one of the horses had kicked him. His wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Peters Spivey [note: this is the name of his mother, not his wife] found the body and reported the discovery. Survivors, besides his wife, include four daughters, Mrs. Gabe Hoskins and Mrs. Robert Newcomb, both of Crab Orchard, and Mrs. Josephine Spath and Mrs. Bessie Robinson, both of Hamilton, Ohio, and three sons, Henry Spivey, Crab Orchard; Arthur Spivey, Advance, Ind., and Elzie Spivey of Michigan. | 3424 | Margaret Hansel Ponder, 80, of Lancaster, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Rockcastle Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brodhead. She was born April 7, 1923, at Pine Hill, Kentucky to the late William and Mary Burdine Hansel. She graduated from Berea College and attained a master's degree from UK. As a home economist, she was retired from the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and had served as County Extension Agent for Garrard County until 1982. Prior to that, she had served as Cooperative Extension Coordinator for a seven county area centered in Laurel County. During her 30 years of service to the University of Kentucky, she also served as County Extension Agent in Pike, Johnson, Estill, Mason, and Rockcastle counties. She was also a member of Gilberts Creek Baptist Church near Lancaster. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Austin Dyche Ponder, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Juddie and Ed Donaldson of Versailles, and Jennifer and Mike Wolken of Nicholasville, 2 sons and 1 daughter in law, Bill Ponder of Phoenix, AZ, and Jeff and Kathy Ponder of Hot Springs, AR, a brother, Dempsey Hansel of Mount Vernon, and 10 grandchildren, Dan Lewis and Kathy Johnson, Aubrey, Austin, and Zelie Donaldson, Amy, Logan, and Emily Ponder, and Carly and Lily Wolken. He was born Nov. 12, 1889 in Marietta, Ohio, where he was raised and educated. He married Josephine M. Reynolds on Sept. 23, 1911 in Hamilton. They lived in Ohio and then in Phoenix, Ariz. Before coming to the Bitterroot Valley in 1932. He operated a farm west of Hamilton, drove a school bus and was a self-employed carpenter. His wife preceded him in death on June 20, 1974. Survivors include three sons, Edward, Lester, and Charles, all of Hamilton; three daughters, Ruby Ballweber and Rena Hollibaugh, both of Hamilton, and June cook, Great Falls; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. | 3434 | Mark Asher, 101, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, March 29, 2013 at Elizabeth House. A native of Boreing, KY, he lived in Hendersonville since 2002. He was a son of the late George M. and Phairlee Robinson Asher, and was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. He was the owner of Accurate Fastener Company in Columbus, OH., and attended First Church of the Nazarene in Hendersonville. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Asher of Hendersonville; a son, James Mark Asher of Columbus, OH; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral will be at 11:00 am Tuesday in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. | Asher, Mark (I86)

He retired several years ago and moved to Redmond to make his home. Mrs. Links, long a resident of Madras, has for the past several years taught in the schools of Battleground, Wash., where, it was announced, she will be succeeded this year by Miss Edna Petersen of Metolius.
