3755 | Note on Find a Grave: Solomon Parsons is the son of William Parsons and Mary (Sometimes called Polly but with no documentation) Cragg (Scots spelling)/Craig Family tradition is that he was born in Rutherford Cty NC which was Tryon Cty NC then. There is no known record nor bible. There is no known picture of Solomon. We have pix of some of his sons who look alike. His parents had moved from Albemarle Parish, Va. to Rowan Cty NC. to Old Tryon. Only one document has been found there that said his father William RASONS had done land improvements in Tryon. Nothing else. Solomon arrived in Alleghany Cy NC (then Ashe) after the Rev War ca 1795. He followed his brothers John and Robert to the area. Solomon ca 1796 married Lydia Sturgill, a local Rev War soldier's daughter. Lydia and Solomon made their first home on a farm on the New River at Grassy Creek. In 1813, they bought a farm from Old John Hash and 2nd wife wife Docia Sturgill that was located on Potato Creek in Ashe County, [now Piney Creek, Alleghany County] NC. They lived the remainder of their lives there and are buried in the family cemetery on this farm. There is a picture of his cabin. He died in 1860 just after this part of Ashe had became Alleghany. His children are listed with Lydia. Living children only are named in 3/28/1862 document: Alleghany Cty NC Record of deeds Book A. 3756 | Note on Find a Grave: Son of Joshua "John" Cox of New Castle, Delaware and Mary Katherine Rankin of Pennsylvania. Born near McDowell's Mill, which was located at what was known as Greencastle borough, now Franklin, then Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. David removed to Lexington, Virginia in the company of his brother, Captain John Cox and their mother. It is believed their sister, Mary "Mollie" Cox, came with them. Land records reflect that David later moved to Grayson County, Virginia. The Cox family probably entered the Grayson area with the Bakers, the Hashes and the Osbornes during the 1760s. Mary Rankin Cox, a widow, arrived with sons John, David, and possibly another son named Joshua. Her husband is believed to be John Joshua Cox who died in Lancaster County (now Franklin County, PA) in the Cumberland Valley. Sister Mary Cox probably traveled with her husband, John Craig, and two or three small sons. A militia unit in Montgomery County, Virginia was headed by Captain John Cox and Lieutenant David Cox was also listed. It is believed that David Cox married Margaret Ann "Peggy" McGowan after reaching Virginia. He was father to eight sons and four daughters. The Cox families had land on New River and Bridle Creek according to the 1815 property tax list. John and David Cox were prominent leaders in what was known as the "New River Settlement". They had large landholdings, both with properties extending across the state line into North Carolina. David Cox's will, which bequeathed to his eight sons several parcels of land, money, slaves, and personal property such as books, etc. indicated substantial wealth. He is the namesake of the Lt. David Cox Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, which serves the greater Galax and Independence areas of southwest Virginia. Inscription "Erected to sacred memory of LT David Cox and his wife Margarett Ann McGowan. Was born in Lancaster Co., Penn. in 1740. Moved to Lexington, Va. with brother CAPT John Cox and sister Mary Cox. Later moved to Christiansburg, Va. and in 1765 moved to Grayson County 10 miles east of old courthouse at Old Town, Virginia. Served in two battles of Revolution under CAPT John Cox in Battles of Point Pleasant and King Mountain. Was son of Joshuay Cox and Mary Rankin. Moved to Grayson County 1765. He died in 1818." | Cox, David (I2135)

3762 | note on Find a Grave: **Bio remains under development** BIO ON MARTHA PEAK No document has ever been found that names the parents of Patsy Peak; nor has a family tradition been passed on which names her parents. The old guess was that her parents were Nathan Peak and Millie Easter. Recent DNA results of Peak descendants point to a kinship with Abel Peak of Tennessee. Some family members conclude the evidence proves that Abel Peak (a.k.a. Peek) is the father of Martha "Patsy" Peak. Since there is a DNA relationship, a link to Abel Peak can be found here: Abel Peak. However, the author of this Bio is hesitant to label Abel as Patsy's father until he receives additional information demonstrating its viability due to some of the arguments against such a conclusion. The difficulties with such a conclusion will be noted below. At the present time the author can only see the forest due to only knowing there is a DNA relationship with Abel Peak, but being unable to distinguish one tree from another. In spite of that, more on the life of Abel Peak will be discussed below. Martha "Patsy" (Peak) appears on the 1860 census as Martha Halsey and on the 1850 & 1870 censuses as Patsy Halsey. She last appears on the 1870 census. After that she vanishes, presumably dying sometime between 1870 & 1880. A Death Record has not been discovered. The undocumented death date generally given for Patsy Halsey of 5 May 1876 actually belongs to her possible sister, Juda (Peak) Halsey (09 Aug 1791-05 May 1876), wife of William "Bucky" Halsey (abt. 1789-28 Aug 1849), the son of William Halsey, Jr, the Revolutionary War veteran and his wife, Rachel Cobb. Juda's husband, William "Bucky" Halsey, and Patsy Peak's husband, James Halsey, were brothers. In abt. 1814 Patsy married James Halsey in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, Virginia, according to "Halsey Genealogy" by David Halsey.(2) The marriage date appears to be based solely on the date of the birth of their 1st child, Ahart. Patsy lived her entire married life in the Wilson Creek area of Grayson County, Virginia. The children from the union of Patsy Peak and James Halsey were as follows (based on "Halsey Genealogy" by Rufus Clinton Halsey). The exact birth dates which are given come from an old record as explained below and may differ from other records: 1. Ahart Halsey (18 Dec(?) 1814 – 1887; m. Elizabeth Cox; his headstone says he was killed by lightening). 2. *Matilda "Millie" Halsey (22 Feb 1817 – 1913; m. Samuel Cox). 3. *Malinda Halsey (8 Nov 1819; m. Daniel Daugherty in 1856). 4. Loucinda Halsey( 2 Jul 1822 – 1887; m. Dr William B. Parsons in 1846). 5. Morris "Marsh" Halsey (9 Mar 1825 – 1909; m. Sophina Hash ca. 1847). 6. Olive Malinda Halsey (25 Jul 1828 – 1909; m. Enoch Hash Sep 30, 1852). 7. Troy Halsey (27 Oct 1830 – 1857; m. Polly Jane Hash ca. 1849). 8. Mary Polly Halsey (21 Feb 1833 – 1907; m. Lazarus Hash in 1848). 9. William Cecil "Cease" Halsey (1839 – 1932; m. Rebecca A. Hash). 10. Adah Ann Halsey (1839 – 1839). 11. Henry Halsey (1840 – 1923; m. Mrs. Nancy Jane Stanford Miles, widow of William Jesse Miles). *Some have said that Malinda and Matilda were twins. However, an old birth record said to be torn from a book inherited by William Halsey, the son of William Halsey, Jr, the Revolutionary War veteran, and which survives in the Revolution War Pension Record of, William Halsey, Jr, does not agree. The record gives two different birth dates for Malinda and Matilda. The dates from the record are reflected above for Ahart, Matilda, Malinda, Lucinda, Morris, Olive, Troy, and Mary. The names of Mitildiea, Melindia & Lucindia accompany their full birth date. For daughter Olive it only says, "Daughter was born in July the 25 day and year 1828." For Ahart, Troy & Mary only full dates are given and unaccompanied by a given name. The record stops with Mary. BIO ON MARTHA'S PROPOSED FATHER, ABEL PEAK The Abel Peak, to which some family members believe DNA points as Patsy Peak's likely father, was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Abel Peak has two known marriages. He married his 1st wife, Millie (LNU), abt. 1760. Millie died abt. 1792. If Abel was indeed the father of Patsy Peak then Millie would have been the mother of possible siblings, Samuel, Juda and Patsy. In Franklin County, 1794, Abel married his 2nd wife, Lydia Jones (b. 30 Jan 1776 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. d. 04 March 1854 in Scott Co. TN). Lydia was the mother of Josiah, Nancy and several others (See Lydia's Revolutionary War Pension Application). It is argued by some family genealogists that Abel Peak and his 2nd wife moved from Franklin County, VA to Grayson County, VA in abt 1805. The difficulty with that supposition is that no record of their life in Grayson County has been discovered, and yet five of Abel's proposed children appear to have lived in Grayson County their entire life. Around 1816 the Abel Peak family show up in Morgan County TN. At least one unmarried daughter, Elizabeth, went with them to Tennessee. Abel and Lydia had additional children born to them in Morgan County.(1) TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS REGARDING THE DNA CONNECTION TO ABEL PEAK 1. The author is still in the investigation process and has made no absolute conclusion as questions remain. 2. There is definitely an DNA connection with Abel Peak. However, Abel could also be the uncle instead of the father or even a cousin. Additional information is needed in order to clarify the claim. 3. There is no evidence of Abel Peak ever living in Grayson County, Virginia. Yet five of his supposed children are said to have lived there . Who are those five? Are any of those in Grayson County Lydia's children? If so, this would lend a little support both to Abel's residence in Grayson, County and of a direct relationship to Patsy. 4. Abel's wife, Lydia, after his decease mentions her place of marriage in Franklin County, Virginia and of moving to Tennessee and the two counties in which they had lived in Tennessee, but never mentions Grayson County, Virginia. This leads one to think they may have never lived there. BURIAL LOCATION See husband James Halsey for verification of place of burial. (1). Owsley Co birth records show Philip -b-1836 & that's the birth year on Philip's headstone. John's original stone only listed SGT Co C 47th Ky Inf with no birth or death date. John & Maranda had the nine children listed on the back of their stone. I've found info on all of the children with the exception of Mary H Strong. Daughter, Sarah Frances married 1st, Henry Morris -b-5-1866 -d-abt-1900 as Sarah is a widow in the 1900 census but their youngest son, Willie was listed as being nine in the 1910 census. Sarah later -m-3-28-1911 Thomas Patton. The burials of Fred & Thomas weren't found. Sarah is buried as a Patton in Butler Co, Ohio. The stone lists daughter, Emma Mahalia as married a Fransriggi but all census records have her married to William Frank Dorton & she's buried as a Dorton in Colorado. 3778 | Note on Find a Grave: According to "Descendants of Peter and Dority Hart 1740-1995 Virginia and North Carolina and Allied Families" by Ruth Gibbs Hart and Karen L. Cooper Nancy Hart was born ca 1784 on the New River, close to where Brush Creek enters the river, in Grayson County, Virginia. Her parents were Peter Hart Sr. and his wife Dority "Dolly", whose maiden name we do not know. Her father Peter had served in the Revolutionary War from Montgomery County, Virginia. Nancy married 25 February 1805 Grayson County, Virginia to Andrew Hash, born ca 1780 Grayson County, Virginia. He was son of William Hash and his wife Eleanor Osborne. Nancy and Andrew lived in Grayson County, Virginia for 25 years after their marriage and all seven of their children were born there. They are on the Grayson County, Virginia 1820 census records. They never owned land there, so perhaps they lived on the land of their parents. In 1829 or 1830 Andrew and Nancy decided to move to Whitley County, Kentucky. Nancy's brother, John Hart and his family had already been living there for many years. At the time Andrew and Nancy made this move it seems likely that her sister and her husband, Stephen and Margaret Hart Floyd, her brother, Stephen Hart and his wife Sarah Bradford Hart, another brother, Peter Hart Jr. and his wife Hannah Poe Hart made the move to Whitley County, Kentucky along with them. All four families appear on the Whitley County Kentucky tax lists within three years of each other. Perhaps some went first and the others followed a few years later, but we find it more likely that for mutual help and safety they all traveled together. Some of the families settled and paid their taxes a few years before the others, but all appeared in Whitley County records within three years of each other. Andrew and Nancy Hash first bought land on 30 September 1830 in Whitley County, Kentucky. They purchased 168 acres on Lynn Camp Creek from William and Elizabeth Dugger. Either, just prior to this or very shortly after the Hashs' also acquired another 120 acres on Lynn Camp Creek, which was probably bought by virtue of a Kentucky Land Warrant. This land was originally entered by W. Edwards. There was also another piece of land bought, 300 acres also on Lynn Camp Creek. This had originally been interred in the name of W. M. Bledsoe and was a Kentucky Land Warrant also. These two pieces of land that were Land Warrants are not in the books, they are registered at Frankfort, Kentucky. No one in this family has copies of these Warrants - but we presume them to exist. All three pieces of land on Lynn Camp Creek are listed by Andrew Hash on the 1830 Whitley County, Kentucky tax list for a total acreage owned of 588 acres and a declared value for the purpose of taxes of $688.00. In 1835 they are still living on Lynn Camp Creek and report 550 acres of land with a value of $600.00. On 2 July 1839 Andrew and Nancy Hash sold 50 acres on Lynn Camp Creek to Pricilla Early. This is the only land they sold in Whitley or surrounding counties. On the 18th of March 1840, we find in Whitley County, Kentucky court order books that Andrew Hash had filed a complaint against his wife Nancy Hash. We do not find the original complaint, only the ruling of the court in March. Andrew and Nancy had separated and were living in separate homes on Lynn Camp Creek. We can tell from the 1840 tax list that there were 6 houses between the two of them. It is possible that some of their children were living in between them, but they were both living on Hash property on Lynn Camp Creek. The court ruled in March of 1840 that the property given by Andrew to Nancy should be retained by her, free from any claim by Andrew. They further decreed that the marriage contract between the two parties be annulled. Andrew and Nancy Hash were now divorced after 35 years of marriage. Nancy Hash reported 325 acres of land on the 1840 tax list, all on Lynn Camp Creek. Andrew Hash reported 300 acres, also on Lynn Camp Creek. Nancy's figure is likely a little too high as they had only owned 588 acres while they were married and had sold 50 acres of it in 1839. On the 2nd of April 1840 (less than two weeks after the divorce), Andrew Hash, remarried to Betsy McCarty Hederick a widow, some 25 years younger than he. They had a son John Hash born in 1843. Andrew Hash died in late 1845 in Whitley County, Kentucky. In 1845 he was listed as paying taxes on 130 acres on Parks Branch. We do not find how he disposed of the other 170 acres he reported owning in 1840. There is no deed in Knox County, or Whitley County, Kentucky. In 1846 Joseph McFarland paid taxes for Andrew Hash, deceased on 100 acres on the Laurel River. One would presume that this is the same property Andrew reported in 1845. His widow, Elizabeth McCarty Hendrick Hash and their 7 year old son, John Hash, are found living with James and Telitha McCarty Nunn, presumably her child. Andrew Hash's estate appraisal is found in Whitley County, Kentucky in Will Book 1, dated December 1845. The sale was held 23 January 1846. Only personal property is mentioned. There is no mention of the dispursal of the property that Andrew owned at his death. Although no record or marker is found, it has been passed down that Andrew Hash was buried in Corinth Cemetery, South of Corbin, Whitley County, Kentucky. Nancy Hart Hash reported and paid taxes on 325 acres of land on Lynn Camp Creek on the 1840 tax list. She appears again on the 1842 tax list with 268 acres on Lynn Camp Creek in Whitley County, KY. She moved with her children to Greene County, Indiana presumably in 1843 as she no longer appears on the tax list in Kentucky after 1842. She is living in the household of her son, John, on the 1850 census of Center Township, Greene County, Indiana. She is not on the 1860 Indiana census, so Nancy Hart Hash must have died between 1850 and 1860 in Greene County, Indiana. No record has been found of her death and nothing is known of where she is buried. Her son, John Hash and his wife are buried in Ridgeport Cemetery in Greene County Indiana. Perhaps she is buried with them. | Hart, Nancy (I1890)

3781 | Note on Find a Grave: Allen Hash Allen Hash was born in Virginia in 1819. He and his wife Elizabeth were living in Shedd, Oregon when their daughter Arminta was born in 1855. They were in Missouri when their daughter Martha Ann was born in 1847. When Arminta was about 15 years old they came East of the Cascade Mountains and settled on Coon Creek in the Grizzly area of Wasco County (later Crook and then Jefferson County). Allen, also called John by his family, and Elizabeth raised a family of five girls: Jane Huston, Martha Ann Strait, Arminta Evans, Etta Chitwood and Mary Ellen Garrett. By 1900 Allen and Elizabeth were probably divorced. Elizabeth was living with Jeff D. Evans family in McKay Precinct in Crook County and Allen was living in the Haystack Precinct in Crook County. Their daughters Mary Allen, wife of James Harlan Garrett, and Etta, wife of Pleasant Chitwood, were both deceased. In 1907 Allen made his will. He left Arminta and Jane $1.00 each and his daughter Martha Ann was to receive the remainder of his estate. The children of Etta and Mary Ellen petitioned the Court to get their mother's share of the Estate. Martha Ann Strait appears in the 1910 Crook County Census and was either divorced or widowed. Allen died March 4, 1908 and is buried in the Gray Butte Cemetery. He left an estate but did not have a grave stone ... only a small grave marker that said only "Alln Hash". | Hash, Allen (I395)

He was the son of John Nathan "Nathan" Young and Lucy Laura "Lucy" Fields. He married Deborah "Debbie" Moore Abt. 1860 in Owsley County, Kentucky. She was born Feb 1843 in Owsley County, Kentucky, and after 21 April 1917, as she applied for Larkin Young's widows pension on that date. There is a Widow's Application number but no certificate number, which leads me to believe that she probably died shortly after the application was made, but definitely before the application was approved and a certificate issued. She was the daughter of John W. Moore, Jr. and Lucretia Smith. His Kentucky Death Certificate # 09217 recorded in 1917 has his name as "Farkin Young", and his cause of death as Apoplexy and Arterio Sclerosis. | Young, Larkin (I1923)

3800 | Note on Find a Grave: Calvin is the son of Pendleton Taylor and Catherine McDaniel Taylor. He was born in Grainger County, Tennessee and moved to Kentucky in 1858 with his parents. In 1858 after arriving in KY he married Julia Ann Shackelford of Breathitt County, the daughter of Abner Terry Shackelford and Nancy Ann Gossett. Calvin enlisted in the Union Army and died of typhoid fever shortly after. He had 2 children. ----------------------------- HANNAH TAYLOR ON THE TOMBSTONE IS CALVIN'S AUNT, NOT HIS WIFE OR DAUGHTER. Calvin's wife was Julia Ann Shackelford Taylor Cope and is burried in Cope Cemetery in Breathitt County. Calvin and Hannah are probably on the same tombstone because they died within a year and were buried next to each other. The footstone rocks still exist and their distance from the headstone indicate both graves were adults. This seems to confirm that Hannah was not an infant daughter of Calvin Taylor, but the wife of Orville Pinkney Taylor. Calvin is the son of Pendleton Taylor and Catherine McDaniel Taylor. | Taylor, Calvin Henderson (I1769)
