h/o Susannah Abbott Painter md 19 Mar 1764 Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., Virginia, He was in the Revolutionary War.

-- Written by Owsley County historian Arch B. Bowman--

The Cornelius Bowman, Sr. family began migration from Kings Branch, Muddy Creek, Madison Co., Ky. to the South Fork of the Kentucky River, as close neighbors to the James Moore, Sr. family, in 1795 just after the Moores arrived on the South Fork. Cornelius Bowman, Sr.'s son & wife, John & Sarah Smith Bowman, were the first to leave Tennessee for Muddy Creek occurring on the Madison Co., Ky. tax list in 1794 & the first to arrive on the South Fork in 1795. All the Cornelius, Sr. family migrated from Tennessee except William. Cornelius, Sr. & Cornelius, Jr. were the last of the Bowmans to leave Muddy Creek in 1812 for the South Fork, where they remained to death.

RE: Cornelius Bowman
I believe his parents are Peter Bowman & Margaret (Scholl) Bowman.....

I found this online.....
We know that Peter Bowman is the father of Cornelius because of a note written by family members in 1901. In that note, it states that "Aunt Sythe" (my gg-grandmother Siretha Seburn) had sent a record, apparently written in her mother's hand (in other words, written by Sarah Bowman Gabbard, b. 1798), outlining family relationships. According to the note, which is in the possession of David Travillion Bunton of Russellville, Arkansas (& is shown in the Cornelius Bowman book recently written by Edward Bowman): "Grandfather Cornelus Bowman Neal - Grandfather Neal Bowman was son of Peter Bowman & Margaret Bowman. Grandma Bowman married a Van Peldt" ... "Written by Sally Gabbard for ???? Aunt Sythe sent record to ???? ???? their mother's hand." In another place, the note states: "Grandma Elizabeth Gentry Gabbard was born Apr. the 23rd Day 1833. Edward Gabbard & Sarah Bowman her parents." [The note is displayed on page D 30 of Ed Bowman's book, "Cornelius Bowman, A Founding Father of America & some of His Ancestors & Descendants".]

CORNELIUS BOWMAN SR., HIS PROBABLE ORIGIN
The national archives files on Cornelius Bowman file (compiled by Walker Hume Bowman and apparently others) promote the now widely held view that Cornelius Bowman Sr. was b. 1740 in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. The date of birth comes from the family Bible of Cornelius' son, Rev. Thomas Bowman, but the Bible record lists no birthplace. Most subsequent studies have accepted Mr. Bowman's belief that Cornelius Sr. was married to Susannah Abbott, called "Betsy."

Whereas deeds exist recording her name as Susannah and independent family traditions that say she was called "Betsy", there is no primary documentation to support the Abbott surname. Neither is there evidence that she was born in Wilkes Co., NC, as is sometimes claimed.

Thanks to research by Edward Lee Bowman, we are beginning to get a clearer view of Cornelius' origins. The Harrisonburg-Rockingham (VA) Historical Society has records that formed that basis of a book by Richard K. MacMaster called _The Session Book of Peaked Mountain And Cook's Creek Presybterian Churches_ that contains the following marriage entry. McMaster records the marriage as follows:

Married in 1764 March 19th
Cornelius Boman
Susanna Painter
The Peaked Mountain Presbyterian meeting house is believed to have been located about seven miles south of Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. The original Session books are in the possession of the Presbyterian and Reformed Historical Foundation, Montreat, N.C., and the first Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg, VA, has a microfilmed copy. I have carefully analyzed a photocopy of the original record using the writer's own handwriting style as seen in other entries as an interpretive and comparative tool. My analysis reveals that bride's name was originally penned as "Eliz.th" (superscripted "th") Pointer (not Painter), but subsequently "Susana" was heavily inked over the Eliz.th. This strongly suggests she bore both the name Susannah as well as Elizabeth, and it explains why her name appears as Susannah in documents, though she was often called "Betsy" by the family.

As noted, the handwritten record suggests Susana/Elizabeth's surname was Pointer, not Painter. The writer consistently formed his "a's" with slightly open tops and a strong right-hand descender, whereas his "o's" have closed tops and a weak descender. Although she may indeed been a Painter, it is clear to me that her surname was recorded as Pointer.

The date of the marriage is in agreement with the estimated dates of birth of Cornelius and Susannah's eldest sons, John and William (b. ca. 1760/65) and fit Cornelius' date of birth of 1740 from the Thomas Bowman Bible. That would provide Cornelius with a believable age of about 24 at his marriage to Susannah. It also fits well with Susannah's estimated date of birth (ca. 1745), but points to her place of birth as possibly Augusta Co., VA, instead of the oft-quoted "Wilkes Co., NC". The Rockingham County location of the marriage (Rockingham County formed 1778 from Augusta County, VA) lies in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, and therefore consistent with Walker Hume Bowman's view that Cornelius Bowman was born in the same region.

On balance, there are simply too many factors that fit well together. Therefore, I believe we must accept the Rockingham county marriage record as that of our Cornelius and Susannah. This suggests that each was probably born to an Augusta (Rockingham) County, VA, family. Incomplete transcripts of Virginia state enumerations 1782-1785 for Rockingham County list households of a Leonard Painter, George Painter, Christly Painter, but no Pointers. Living near Christly Painter are several Bowmans, including John Bowman, Benjamin Bowman, Jacob Bowman Jr. There is also a Joseph Bowman. Also living in that county is Andrew Byrd Sr., Andrew Byrd Jr. and John "Shever" (Sevier). These names remind us of the court records of Augusta County, VA, cited by Chalkley and discussed in Ed Bowman's work.

As far as I know, the several Bowman clans living in Augusta County at that time were either German/Swiss or Dutch. The Painters were also German, the name having been derived from Bender. It should be noted that "Bender" pronounced by a native German sounds remarkably like "Painter." Although my own grandfather, Rev. William Albert Bowman (of Owsley Co., KY) believed that his Bowman ancestors were Irish, I doubt that he was correct.

America and some of His Ancestors and Descendants".]
Two records of the general time of Peter's death place Cornelius in
the same general area where Peter lived: (1) a record from the Peaked
Mountain Church shows Cornelius "Boman" marrying Susannah Pointer on
March 19th, 1764; and (2) the April 16, 1767, record of the court
martial of Cornelius for missing militia meetings. Again, the first
record mentiond apparently gives the name of Cornelius' wife -
Susannah Pointer. All of this is well documented in the Ed Bowman
book.

Madison Co KY Court Orders Book B: 1 Dec 1795: Deed from Robert

Daniel Lee & ordered certified.
4 May 1796: Same deed proved by Rebekah Lee & ordered recorded. Also
appointed commissioners to determine boundary of a 2000 acres entry on
Muddy Creek - Cornelius Bowman was one of the commissioners.
3 Dec 1799 Cornelius Bowman granted a certificate to obtain letters
of administration on the estate of John Bowman, dec'd, whereupon he
entered into bond with Elisha Bowman and Cornelius Bowman. [John may
be his father since his son John lived some longer than this; Elisha
and Cornelius two of his sons.]

Cornelius Bowman and his family meandered to Muddy Creek in Estill County around 1790. It was his boys who followed James Moore's daughters to South Fork County. After Neal's wife, Susannah died and he was getting on in years, he was persuaded to come to Owsley County with his sons. The story goes that he grieved so over the loss of his wife that he almost lost his mind. The sons went back to Muddy Creek, dug up the remains of their mother and moved her back to Owsley County (it was still Clay County then.) Her body was taken by pack-horse to old Neal's cabin where he requested her remains be laid on his bed. That night he crawled into bed beside her coffin to sleep. The next day she was buried on a nearby hill. Old Neal soon joined his beloved Susannah when he was laid to rest by her side.

The elderly Bowmans, their son, Cornelius, Jr. and his wife Betty Moore Bowman, are all buried near the residence of Willard Campbell. The mouth of the branch where widow Betty Bowman lived many years after the death of her husband still bears her name. Cornelius Bowman obtained land in 1778 on Buffalo Creek and Upper Yadkin: (Land Entries in Wilkes County, NC, beginning March 4, 1778, by J.J. Hayes.)
"No. 56, 18 April 1778, . . . 200 acres on W. side of the Yadkin above mouth of Buffalow begg. . . including the impt Mr. Cornelius Bowman. . . . ".

Cornelius Bowman was appointed and commissioned a Justice of the Peace for County of Washington, North Carolina, May 10, 1791.

Cornelius Bowman was a Methodist Preacher.

Cornelius Bowman (1740-1826) migrated with his family from Senandoah Valley, Virginia, through the Carolinas; was in the Watauga Settlement, Washington County, North Carolina, for a while; then back to Virginia for a short time, before finally migrating to and settling in, Madison County, Kentucky.

The only child of Cornelius to remain in Tennessee was William E. Bowman (1768-1840).

Compiled from notes in the Rogers family history books.
If correct, our Susannah was a Pointer, not an Abbott. Although Painter/Pointer seems at first to be an English surname, researchers of the Painter/Pointer family of the Shenandoah Valley say they were German -- "Painter/Pointer" was anglicized from the German "Bender". Supposedly, the Painter/Bender family was descended from Matthaus Bender b. 1677 Mannheim, Palatinate, Germany, d. 1744 New Hanover Twp., York Co., PA; he m. Anna (Mary) Catharina b. 1681 Palatinate, d. 1764 New Hanover Twp, York Co., PA. You can find more by checking out the Painter Family GenForum.

Nicholas B. 'Nick' Bowman was the son of Elijah Bowman and Elizabeth Gentry. Records indicate Nicholas was born in Lee County, Kentucky or Virginia around 1795-1799 depending upon the source.

Nicholas and Elizabeth (sometimes seen as Isabell) Moore, daughter of James and Ellender Hamilton Moore, married October 3, 1818 in Clay County, Kentucky. They became the parents of:

Isabell/Elizabeth Bowman Spencer (1820-1876)
Henry Clay Bowman (1822-1864)
Ellender Bowman Lawson (1824-?)
Lucinda Bowman Spencer (1826-1880)
Emoline Bowman Lawson (1827-1921)
John Wesley ‘Butler’ Bowman (1831-1899)
Marium Bowman Chambers (1833-1920)
Martha Bowman (1835-1853)
Deborah Jane ‘Deb’ Bowman Spencer (1838-1926)
Rachel Bowman Combs (1841-1924)
William Fletcher Bowman (1842-1863)

Nicholas last appears in the 1860 Census for Breathitt County, Kentucky. It is assumed he died shortly thereafter or at least before 1870. The death records for Breathitt County are not available for several years between 1860 and 1870. Some undocumented sources state that Nicholas and Isabel/Elizabeth are buried on the old farm about two mile up Lower Twin Creeks in Breathitt County.

From Guilford, came the ancestors of the present Phipps families that descended from the two brothers Benjamin Phipps of whom I have already written and Isaiah Phipps here in Grayson County, Va., and Ashe and Alleghany Counties, N.C.

Isaiah Phipps [1769-1847] came here, as a young man; stayed with his brother Ben Phipps until he took up land and married a Miss How. His home was established west of the Fields place. He was a great hunter of wild game. The writer was told he killed early one morning two turkey gobblers and a big buck before breakfast. Game of all kin was plentiful here in his day and for a long time afterwards. He reared a large family of boys and girls. All of his sons and daughters moved away from the old homestead but two sons, Benjamin [1811-1901] and David Phipps [1817-1907].

Benjamin Phipps [1811-1901] married Ainey Long [Anna Elina Long - "Eleanor" (1811-1901)]and was given the lower part of his father's homestead. He built his home in the woods; he cleared the land and became one of the best farmers of that day. Because of the numerous Bens in the Phipps family he was called "Preacher" Ben Phipps. Well did he carry out all of his life the title given him; he never preached in words, but lived the life which if many so-called preachers had emulated would have given them more influence for good, if they had walked and lived as did "Preacher" Ben. He had eight children; four girls and three sons lived to be grown.

Died March 15, 1856 in Letcher, Letcher County, Kentucky, United States

NOTES
Sturgill book by David Sturgill says:

There were 2 different Zachariah Wells at the time prior to 1800/New River Valley.

Letcher Cty death abstracts says Jemima's mother was an Abigail Osborne, dau of James who married a Zachariah Wells of Loudon Cty Va. 1st cousin of Easter Osborne who married Isaac Richmond.

or

Another Zachariah arrived in the New river Valley in 1774 as an Indian scout.
In 1778-1798 there are court records, tax lists and deeds with this Zachariah.
In 1798, Zachariah sold his farm on New river next to "old James Sturgill" to Francis Sr. (old James' son).
Zachariah moved to Wise Cty. Va. near Appalachia.
He married a Rebecca LNU.

When John Sturgill and wife Jemima moved from Ky. to Wise in 1816. They bought the land from James Sturgill next to Zachariah Wells.

Some thought this Zachariah was brother to Jemima or her dad.

1 Zachariah was a Rev war soldier enlisted Loudon Cty. Va 7/8/1776.
He filed a pension application in Sullivan Cty. Tenn. in 1825.
He married Abagail Osborne.
We do not think these are her parents.

John H. Ward served in Co. I, 51st VA Inf. CSA, enlisting 2/28/1863, at age 35 and given disability discharge on 5/6/1863. He had a daughter named Elizabeth Ward born circa 1854-1858. She last appears on the 1900 census with her father and stepmother aged 42. After that she seems to have disappeared.
I wondered if she married late in life or died before 1910.
My Aunt Missouri Anderson Testerman 1899-1993 spoke of her mother's sister Elizabeth Ward riding horses a lot, so it makes me wonder if she did survive after 1900-1910. Does anyone know about her?

The children of John Hash Ward and Evalina Hash:

NOTES
John Sturgill was born about 1779 in Wythe (became Grayson in 1793) Co., Virginia.

Census records do not exist for Virginia for 1790, but John married Jemima Wells about 1799, either in Virginia or North Carolina, and they had 11 children.

John moved from Virginia to North Carolina about 1799, and he is listed as head of household on the 1800 census of Morgan, Ashe, North Carolina.

His parents and several siblings joined him there in 1801.

His father died in January 1807, and John is listed as head of household on the 1810 census of Ashe Co., North Carolina.

John & his brother James moved with their families to Virginia, and they are listed together on the 1820 census 0f Scott (became Wise in 1856) Co., Virginia, both with the last name spelled Sturgeon.

John Sturgeon is still listed in Scott Co., Virginia in 1830, but his brother James is listed in Ashe Co., North Carolina.

John moved with his family from Virginia to Kentucky, and they are listed on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of Harlan Co., Kentucky.

Jemima Wells Sturgill died on March 15, 1856 in Letcher Co., Kentucky, and John was married second to Jane Abbott about 1857.

At the time of this marriage John was age 78 & Jane was age 21.

John & Jane are listed on the 1860 census of District, Letcher Co., Kentucky, with a 6 year old daughter named Arminda in the household that is probably Jane's from a previous relationship since she was born 2 years before Jemima's death.

John & Jane had at least 2 more children.

At some time between 1862-1865 the family returned from Kentucky to Virginia.

John Sturgill died on March 15, 1865 in Wise Co., Virginia. not sure if Jane died also, but children Lydia and John are living with John's son Francis on the 1870 of Gladeville, Wise Co., Virginia, and the 1880 census of Richmond, Wise Co., Virginia.

On the 1880 census they are listed as being Francis' half-sister and half-brother.

Several generations of The Sturgill and Parsons Family intermarried and traveled to Wise and Ky at different times

Children of John Sturgill & Jemima Wells were:
John (1799),

David (1800),

Abigail (1801),

Mary Ann (1803),

Solomon D. (1804), FaG 50719301
In David Sturgill's Sturgill Book page 52/54, Solomon D shows as son of Francis Jr.
It appears that this is wrong.
Solomon D appears to be son of Francis Jr's brother John

Francis (1808),

Andrew Jackson (1810),

Sarah "Sally" (1812),

Rachel (1816),

Nancy (1819),

Elizabeth (1823)

Agnes (1828) Sturgill.

Children of John Sturgill & Jane Abbott were:
Lydia (1859)

John (1862) Sturgill.

NOTES
From the DA Sturgill book:
There were 3 Johns at the same time period. Be careful.

John and wife probably settled first on his father's land on the New river.
In 1804, he bought a farm at the forks of the New river and then sold part of it to brother James.
In 1806, he bought a farm of 156a in Grayson Cty Va. which was next to his dad, Francis Sr. John seems not to have lived here.
He sold the farm to Moses Halsey on 1812.
In 1811, he sold his Alleghy (Ashe Cty then)farm to his bro in laws William Weaver and Solomon Parsons.

In 1812, he moved west.
He settled first in Letcher Cty. Ky (then Harlen) near the Cumberland river on Mart Collier's place.
He swapped this land to Charlie Blair for land at Big Stone Mts near Big Stone Gap where he died and was buried, later.

In 1816, he bought land in Wise Cty. Va where Appalachia now stands from Uncle James Sturgill who bought it in 1812.
John moved to Wise Cty.
Between 1830/40 John moved back to Letcher Cty.
and stayed til Jemima died in 1856.

He remarried and moved to Wise Cty. where he died and is buried.
He died ca 1865 and is buried in the Robinett cemetery in Crackers Neck.
The grave not marked.

John's great grandson Moses Sturgill related many of these details.

Children: (We think 12 children from Jemima)
Dau infant, may be Rebecca below

Rebecca was born in 1799 in VA. She died after 1880 in Ashe County, NC.
Rebecca married Jordan Neithercutt son of William Nethercutt on 2 Mar 1815 in Lee Co. VA.
Jordan was born in 1790 in NC

This is wrong.

NOTES
JOHN STURGILL and his wife Jemima Wells made their first home in Ashe Co., NC near the forks of New River on land which his grandfather James then claimed.

After the death of his grandfather in 1803, John sold his claim to his brother James in 1804.

In 1806 John bought a tract of 156a in Grayson Co. VA which adjoined his father's land in Ashe Co., NC.

This 156a was sold to Moses Halsey in 1812 at which time John is believed to have moved to Letcher Co, KY where he settled on the head of the Cumberland river.

In 1816 he bought a farm in Lee (Wise) Co., VA from his brother James who had purchased the land in 1812 so it appears that the two brothers went there together in 1812. John later moved to Harlan Co., KY, then back to Wise Co, VA, then to Letcher Co, KY where Jemima died and was buried in 1856.

John returned to Wise Co. VA during the civil war and settled in a small valley called "crackers neck".

His descendants say that he died there soon after and was buried in the Robinett cemetery - no marker stone was found.

There is some question as to whether or not John married a second time after the death of Jemima, no marriage record was found.

In the 1860 census of Letcher Co., KY John was living with a young woman named Jane who had a child age six named Araminda.

Some of John's descendants say that Jane was also a Sturgill and John had hired her to help take care of Jemima in her last illness and that after the death of Jemima she continued to live with John as she had no place else to go.
It is the opinion of the writer (DAS) that this story is essentially true

3779 Note on Find a Grave:

Lydia was a daughter of Francis Sturgill, Rev War Vet and Rebecca Hash.

Born in Montgomery Cty Va in today's Cox's Chapel area of Grayson Cty Va.
She lived within miles of the Grayson Cty Va and Alleghany Cty (was Ashe Cty til 1859) NC border.

There is no proof for her middle name to be Nancy.
She had a sister Nancy Sturgill Osborne who already had the name Nancy.
Back then middle names were not used as per the church.

Her maiden name was also spelled Stodghill, Sturgeon and variations etc.

We do not know who she was named after.

Baptized 11/1/1849 Piney Creek Baptist Meeting house.

She married Solomon Parsons ca 1796.

They lived on and are buried on their property.
It became the Billings property when Horatio Billings bought it.
His family is buried there, too.

This cemetery may be called the Solomon Parsons cemetery, too.

Children
1. Solomon Jr.
b. 1800, found on the estate papers.
Was already deceased with a daughter Anna in Indiana.
We are looking for this family.
He may not be Lydia's child.
He may be the product of an unknown first wife.
He is named for his father.

2. John aka Esquire John or Sq John
b. 1/19/1805.
He and his family are NOT buried here with his parents.
He is buried with his family about 1 mile away on Cindy Lane in a destroyed cemetery.
His grave stone (and his family's) is located 2 miles away at Mt Carmel.
It is a memorial stone only.
No bones are there.
He married 1 Margaret Gambill 2 Phebe Laxton.
He is named for, we think, a brother of his dad Solomon.

3 Robert
m. 1 Elizabeth Wells 2 Annalise aka Anna Blanton.
He is named for a brother of dad Solomon and the grandfather of Solomon.
He moved to Lee/Wise Cty Va.
On Blanton papers Annalise is shown as such.
On census records she is Anna.
Thanks to descendant Emily for the info.

4 Marion we believe died as an infant.
We think he was a boy.
He may be named for famous SC Rev war hero Francis Marion because Marion is not a traditional name in the Parsons family.
His father may have come from or fought in the SC area.

5 Caleb
m. Katherine Landreth.
They lived on the home place.
We do not know who he was named after.

6 William B.
m. Lucinda.
We think he is named after his grandfather.

We do not know who he is named for.

9 Rebecca
m. Alvin Dickson/Dixon.
She is named for her mom Lydia's mother.
Her husband has a namesake for an unknown reason in her brother Alvin Dixon Parsons.

10 Nancy
m. Andrew Osborne.
We do not know who she is named for.

11 Mary
m. 1 Josiah Halsey 2 James Wesley Kegley.
Josiah died young.
James left the area and disappeared.

12 Alexander D.
m. TBA

13 Alvin Dixon Parsons
m. Phoebe Tolliver.
We do not know who he was named for but he shares a name with his brother in law.

14 James
m. Mary Landreth.
He may be named for Solomon's brother or Lydia's brother.

15 Craig/Cragg S.
m. Alpha Williams.
He is named after Mary Cragg/Craig Parsons' family.
She was his grandmother on Solomon's side.

The Sturgill book lists children:
1. Solomon Colombus Parsons
b 1836.
This is wrong.
He is a grandson.
He is the child of John above and 1 Margaret Gambill.
He is named for his grandpa Solomon.
He was visiting.

CENSUS 1860
widow.

PICTURE
We have a daguerreotype copy of her done just before she died 1861.
Her son Sq. John always kept it in his house next to his similar picture.
Then, his daughter Phebe Parsons Ward kept it in her house. Now, it hangs in Phebe's granddaughter's home.

LYDIA STURGILL and her husband Solomon Parsons made their home on a farm on New River at Grassy Creek.
In 1813 they bought a farm from her grandpa John Hash located on Potato Creek in Alleghany County.
They lived out their lives here and are buried in a family cemetery on this farm.

Old John Hash is a forefather of the Hash line in southwest Virginia.
John and his 1st wife (??) had about 7 kids before she died about the time John left for Virginia in the early 1760's. He remarried to Elizabeth Stodgill on his journey thru Orange County, VA (also in the early 1760's). John and Elizabeth Stodgill only had one son, another John born about 1763. The listing for Elizabeth S. Hash shows many children -- she only had the one son, John. The rest are from John's first wife. Old John's will spelled out this John by my 2nd wife.

Old Resident of Muscatine Passes Away---- Samuel Phillips for over 20 years a resident of this city, died at his late home on Sherman street Saturday evening at 7:45 o'clock, he, with his son, John, of this city, was trimming trees in front of his residence when he received a stroke of paralysis. He lived until that evening when he quietly passed away. Mr. Phillips was born in Indiana over 69 years ago. His children all live in this County and he had many relatives. His wife and four children survive him. The children are: Amanda fisher, 508 Grover street; Mrs. Sarah Spence, 412 Pond Street; Joseph Phillips, Lucas Street and John Phillips, 610 Wallace street. He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers, who are: Mrs. Dell Smith, of Moscow; Mrs. Annie Putney, Muscatine Island; James and Addison Phillips, both of this city. There are also 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The funeral was held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, short services being held at the house and later services at Greenwood chapel, with Rev. E.C. Brooks in charge. The interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.
==============
Samuel was first married to Mary Lawrence (in 1859) and they had 4 children. Armilda was his second wife and he was still married to her when he died (1905). I seem to recall (and don't know why I don't have it in my data file) that they married just a couple years before he died, maybe 1902 or 1903.

Ironically, Samuel is buried in Greenwood in a plot owned by Armilda but Armilda is buried in Mt. Pleasant. Samuel's son, Joseph (d. 1952), is buried in Armilda's lot with Samuel.

Solomon Parsons is the son of William Parsons and Mary (Sometimes called Polly but with no documentation) Cragg (Scots spelling)/Craig

Family tradition is that he was born in Rutherford Cty NC which was Tryon Cty NC then.
There is no known record nor bible.
There is no known picture of Solomon. We have pix of some of his sons who look alike.

His parents had moved from Albemarle Parish, Va. to Rowan Cty NC. to Old Tryon.
Only one document has been found there that said his father William RASONS had done land improvements in Tryon.
Nothing else.

Solomon arrived in Alleghany Cy NC (then Ashe) after the Rev War ca 1795.
He followed his brothers John and Robert to the area.

Solomon ca 1796 married Lydia Sturgill, a local Rev War soldier's daughter.

Lydia and Solomon made their first home on a farm on the New River at Grassy Creek.
In 1813, they bought a farm from Old John Hash and 2nd wife wife Docia Sturgill that was located on Potato Creek in Ashe County, [now Piney Creek, Alleghany County] NC.
They lived the remainder of their lives there and are buried in the family cemetery on this farm.

There is a picture of his cabin.

He died in 1860 just after this part of Ashe had became Alleghany.

His children are listed with Lydia.
Living children only are named in 3/28/1862 document: Alleghany Cty NC Record of deeds Book A.

3791 Note on Find a Grave:

Son of Joshua "John" Cox of New Castle, Delaware and Mary Katherine Rankin of Pennsylvania.

Born near McDowell's Mill, which was located at what was known as Greencastle borough, now Franklin, then Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

David removed to Lexington, Virginia in the company of his brother, Captain John Cox and their mother. It is believed their sister, Mary "Mollie" Cox, came with them. Land records reflect that David later moved to Grayson County, Virginia.

The Cox family probably entered the Grayson area with the Bakers, the Hashes and the Osbornes during the 1760s.

Mary Rankin Cox, a widow, arrived with sons John, David, and possibly another son named Joshua. Her husband is believed to be John Joshua Cox who died in Lancaster County (now Franklin County, PA) in the Cumberland Valley.
Sister Mary Cox probably traveled with her husband, John Craig, and two or three small sons.

A militia unit in Montgomery County, Virginia was headed by Captain John Cox and Lieutenant David Cox was also listed. It is believed that David Cox married Margaret Ann "Peggy" McGowan after reaching Virginia. He was father to eight sons and four daughters.

The Cox families had land on New River and Bridle Creek according to the 1815 property tax list. John and David Cox were prominent leaders in what was known as the "New River Settlement". They had large landholdings, both with properties extending across the state line into North Carolina. David Cox's will, which bequeathed to his eight sons several parcels of land, money, slaves, and personal property such as books, etc. indicated substantial wealth.

He is the namesake of the Lt. David Cox Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, which serves the greater Galax and Independence areas of southwest Virginia.

BIO ON MARTHA PEAK
No document has ever been found that names the parents of Patsy Peak; nor has a family tradition been passed on which names her parents. The old guess was that her parents were Nathan Peak and Millie Easter.

Recent DNA results of Peak descendants point to a kinship with Abel Peak of Tennessee. Some family members conclude the evidence proves that Abel Peak (a.k.a. Peek) is the father of Martha "Patsy" Peak. Since there is a DNA relationship, a link to Abel Peak can be found here: Abel Peak. However, the author of this Bio is hesitant to label Abel as Patsy's father until he receives additional information demonstrating its viability due to some of the arguments against such a conclusion. The difficulties with such a conclusion will be noted below. At the present time the author can only see the forest due to only knowing there is a DNA relationship with Abel Peak, but being unable to distinguish one tree from another. In spite of that, more on the life of Abel Peak will be discussed below.

Martha "Patsy" (Peak) appears on the 1860 census as Martha Halsey and on the 1850 & 1870 censuses as Patsy Halsey. She last appears on the 1870 census. After that she vanishes, presumably dying sometime between 1870 & 1880. A Death Record has not been discovered. The undocumented death date generally given for Patsy Halsey of 5 May 1876 actually belongs to her possible sister, Juda (Peak) Halsey (09 Aug 1791-05 May 1876), wife of William "Bucky" Halsey (abt. 1789-28 Aug 1849), the son of William Halsey, Jr, the Revolutionary War veteran and his wife, Rachel Cobb. Juda's husband, William "Bucky" Halsey, and Patsy Peak's husband, James Halsey, were brothers.

In abt. 1814 Patsy married James Halsey in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, Virginia, according to "Halsey Genealogy" by David Halsey.(2) The marriage date appears to be based solely on the date of the birth of their 1st child, Ahart. Patsy lived her entire married life in the Wilson Creek area of Grayson County, Virginia.

The children from the union of Patsy Peak and James Halsey were as follows (based on "Halsey Genealogy" by Rufus Clinton Halsey). The exact birth dates which are given come from an old record as explained below and may differ from other records:

1. Ahart Halsey (18 Dec(?) 1814 – 1887; m. Elizabeth Cox; his headstone says he was killed by lightening).
2. *Matilda "Millie" Halsey (22 Feb 1817 – 1913; m. Samuel Cox).
3. *Malinda Halsey (8 Nov 1819; m. Daniel Daugherty in 1856).
4. Loucinda Halsey( 2 Jul 1822 – 1887; m. Dr William B. Parsons in 1846).
5. Morris "Marsh" Halsey (9 Mar 1825 – 1909; m. Sophina Hash ca. 1847).
6. Olive Malinda Halsey (25 Jul 1828 – 1909; m. Enoch Hash Sep 30, 1852).
7. Troy Halsey (27 Oct 1830 – 1857; m. Polly Jane Hash ca. 1849).
8. Mary Polly Halsey (21 Feb 1833 – 1907; m. Lazarus Hash in 1848).
9. William Cecil "Cease" Halsey (1839 – 1932; m. Rebecca A. Hash).
10. Adah Ann Halsey (1839 – 1839).
11. Henry Halsey (1840 – 1923; m. Mrs. Nancy Jane Stanford Miles, widow of William Jesse Miles).

*Some have said that Malinda and Matilda were twins. However, an old birth record said to be torn from a book inherited by William Halsey, the son of William Halsey, Jr, the Revolutionary War veteran, and which survives in the Revolution War Pension Record of, William Halsey, Jr, does not agree. The record gives two different birth dates for Malinda and Matilda. The dates from the record are reflected above for Ahart, Matilda, Malinda, Lucinda, Morris, Olive, Troy, and Mary. The names of Mitildiea, Melindia & Lucindia accompany their full birth date. For daughter Olive it only says, "Daughter was born in July the 25 day and year 1828." For Ahart, Troy & Mary only full dates are given and unaccompanied by a given name. The record stops with Mary.

BIO ON MARTHA'S PROPOSED FATHER, ABEL PEAK

The Abel Peak, to which some family members believe DNA points as Patsy Peak's likely father, was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Abel Peak has two known marriages. He married his 1st wife, Millie (LNU), abt. 1760. Millie died abt. 1792. If Abel was indeed the father of Patsy Peak then Millie would have been the mother of possible siblings, Samuel, Juda and Patsy. In Franklin County, 1794, Abel married his 2nd wife, Lydia Jones (b. 30 Jan 1776 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. d. 04 March 1854 in Scott Co. TN). Lydia was the mother of Josiah, Nancy and several others (See Lydia's Revolutionary War Pension Application).

It is argued by some family genealogists that Abel Peak and his 2nd wife moved from Franklin County, VA to Grayson County, VA in abt 1805. The difficulty with that supposition is that no record of their life in Grayson County has been discovered, and yet five of Abel's proposed children appear to have lived in Grayson County their entire life. Around 1816 the Abel Peak family show up in Morgan County TN. At least one unmarried daughter, Elizabeth, went with them to Tennessee. Abel and Lydia had additional children born to them in Morgan County.(1)

TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS REGARDING THE DNA CONNECTION TO ABEL PEAK

1. The author is still in the investigation process and has made no absolute conclusion as questions remain.

2. There is definitely an DNA connection with Abel Peak. However, Abel could also be the uncle instead of the father or even a cousin. Additional information is needed in order to clarify the claim.

3. There is no evidence of Abel Peak ever living in Grayson County, Virginia. Yet five of his supposed children are said to have lived there . Who are those five? Are any of those in Grayson County Lydia's children? If so, this would lend a little support both to Abel's residence in Grayson, County and of a direct relationship to Patsy.

4. Abel's wife, Lydia, after his decease mentions her place of marriage in Franklin County, Virginia and of moving to Tennessee and the two counties in which they had lived in Tennessee, but never mentions Grayson County, Virginia. This leads one to think they may have never lived there.
