3801 | Note on Find a Grave: -m-2-5-1857 Maranda Wilson John's new headstone & plaque has him born 1836 but census reports shows him one year older than brother Philip. Owsley Co birth records show Philip -b-1836 & that's the birth year on Philip's headstone. John's original stone only listed SGT Co C 47th Ky Inf with no birth or death date. John & Maranda had the nine children listed on the back of their stone. I've found info on all of the children with the exception of Mary H Strong. Daughter, Sarah Frances married 1st, Henry Morris -b-5-1866 -d-abt-1900 as Sarah is a widow in the 1900 census but their youngest son, Willie was listed as being nine in the 1910 census. Sarah later -m-3-28-1911 Thomas Patton. The burials of Fred & Thomas weren't found. Sarah is buried as a Patton in Butler Co, Ohio. The stone lists daughter, Emma Mahalia as married a Fransriggi but all census records have her married to William Frank Dorton & she's buried as a Dorton in Colorado. My understanding is a Strong relative in Booneville had the new stones put in. John is my gg-uncle, brother to my gg-grandfather, Philip. | Strong, John (I2431)

3811 | Note on Find a Grave: According to "Descendants of Peter and Dority Hart 1740-1995 Virginia and North Carolina and Allied Families" by Ruth Gibbs Hart and Karen L. Cooper Nancy Hart was born ca 1784 on the New River, close to where Brush Creek enters the river, in Grayson County, Virginia. Her parents were Peter Hart Sr. and his wife Dority "Dolly", whose maiden name we do not know. Her father Peter had served in the Revolutionary War from Montgomery County, Virginia. Nancy married 25 February 1805 Grayson County, Virginia to Andrew Hash, born ca 1780 Grayson County, Virginia. He was son of William Hash and his wife Eleanor Osborne. Nancy and Andrew lived in Grayson County, Virginia for 25 years after their marriage and all seven of their children were born there. They are on the Grayson County, Virginia 1820 census records. They never owned land there, so perhaps they lived on the land of their parents. In 1829 or 1830 Andrew and Nancy decided to move to Whitley County, Kentucky. Nancy's brother, John Hart and his family had already been living there for many years. At the time Andrew and Nancy made this move it seems likely that her sister and her husband, Stephen and Margaret Hart Floyd, her brother, Stephen Hart and his wife Sarah Bradford Hart, another brother, Peter Hart Jr. and his wife Hannah Poe Hart made the move to Whitley County, Kentucky along with them. All four families appear on the Whitley County Kentucky tax lists within three years of each other. Perhaps some went first and the others followed a few years later, but we find it more likely that for mutual help and safety they all traveled together. Some of the families settled and paid their taxes a few years before the others, but all appeared in Whitley County records within three years of each other. Andrew and Nancy Hash first bought land on 30 September 1830 in Whitley County, Kentucky. They purchased 168 acres on Lynn Camp Creek from William and Elizabeth Dugger. Either, just prior to this or very shortly after the Hashs' also acquired another 120 acres on Lynn Camp Creek, which was probably bought by virtue of a Kentucky Land Warrant. This land was originally entered by W. Edwards. There was also another piece of land bought, 300 acres also on Lynn Camp Creek. This had originally been interred in the name of W. M. Bledsoe and was a Kentucky Land Warrant also. These two pieces of land that were Land Warrants are not in the books, they are registered at Frankfort, Kentucky. No one in this family has copies of these Warrants - but we presume them to exist. All three pieces of land on Lynn Camp Creek are listed by Andrew Hash on the 1830 Whitley County, Kentucky tax list for a total acreage owned of 588 acres and a declared value for the purpose of taxes of $688.00. In 1835 they are still living on Lynn Camp Creek and report 550 acres of land with a value of $600.00. On 2 July 1839 Andrew and Nancy Hash sold 50 acres on Lynn Camp Creek to Pricilla Early. This is the only land they sold in Whitley or surrounding counties. On the 18th of March 1840, we find in Whitley County, Kentucky court order books that Andrew Hash had filed a complaint against his wife Nancy Hash. We do not find the original complaint, only the ruling of the court in March. Andrew and Nancy had separated and were living in separate homes on Lynn Camp Creek. We can tell from the 1840 tax list that there were 6 houses between the two of them. It is possible that some of their children were living in between them, but they were both living on Hash property on Lynn Camp Creek. The court ruled in March of 1840 that the property given by Andrew to Nancy should be retained by her, free from any claim by Andrew. They further decreed that the marriage contract between the two parties be annulled. Andrew and Nancy Hash were now divorced after 35 years of marriage. Nancy Hash reported 325 acres of land on the 1840 tax list, all on Lynn Camp Creek. Andrew Hash reported 300 acres, also on Lynn Camp Creek. Nancy's figure is likely a little too high as they had only owned 588 acres while they were married and had sold 50 acres of it in 1839. On the 2nd of April 1840 (less than two weeks after the divorce), Andrew Hash, remarried to Betsy McCarty Hederick a widow, some 25 years younger than he. They had a son John Hash born in 1843. Andrew Hash died in late 1845 in Whitley County, Kentucky. In 1845 he was listed as paying taxes on 130 acres on Parks Branch. We do not find how he disposed of the other 170 acres he reported owning in 1840. There is no deed in Knox County, or Whitley County, Kentucky. In 1846 Joseph McFarland paid taxes for Andrew Hash, deceased on 100 acres on the Laurel River. One would presume that this is the same property Andrew reported in 1845. His widow, Elizabeth McCarty Hendrick Hash and their 7 year old son, John Hash, are found living with James and Telitha McCarty Nunn, presumably her child. Andrew Hash's estate appraisal is found in Whitley County, Kentucky in Will Book 1, dated December 1845. The sale was held 23 January 1846. Only personal property is mentioned. There is no mention of the dispursal of the property that Andrew owned at his death. Although no record or marker is found, it has been passed down that Andrew Hash was buried in Corinth Cemetery, South of Corbin, Whitley County, Kentucky. Nancy Hart Hash reported and paid taxes on 325 acres of land on Lynn Camp Creek on the 1840 tax list. She appears again on the 1842 tax list with 268 acres on Lynn Camp Creek in Whitley County, KY. She moved with her children to Greene County, Indiana presumably in 1843 as she no longer appears on the tax list in Kentucky after 1842. She is living in the household of her son, John, on the 1850 census of Center Township, Greene County, Indiana. She is not on the 1860 Indiana census, so Nancy Hart Hash must have died between 1850 and 1860 in Greene County, Indiana. No record has been found of her death and nothing is known of where she is buried. Her son, John Hash and his wife are buried in Ridgeport Cemetery in Greene County Indiana. Perhaps she is buried with them. | Hart, Nancy (I1890)

3814 | Note on Find a Grave: Allen Hash Allen Hash was born in Virginia in 1819. He and his wife Elizabeth were living in Shedd, Oregon when their daughter Arminta was born in 1855. They were in Missouri when their daughter Martha Ann was born in 1847. When Arminta was about 15 years old they came East of the Cascade Mountains and settled on Coon Creek in the Grizzly area of Wasco County (later Crook and then Jefferson County). Allen, also called John by his family, and Elizabeth raised a family of five girls: Jane Huston, Martha Ann Strait, Arminta Evans, Etta Chitwood and Mary Ellen Garrett. By 1900 Allen and Elizabeth were probably divorced. Elizabeth was living with Jeff D. Evans family in McKay Precinct in Crook County and Allen was living in the Haystack Precinct in Crook County. Their daughters Mary Allen, wife of James Harlan Garrett, and Etta, wife of Pleasant Chitwood, were both deceased. In 1907 Allen made his will. He left Arminta and Jane $1.00 each and his daughter Martha Ann was to receive the remainder of his estate. The children of Etta and Mary Ellen petitioned the Court to get their mother's share of the Estate. Martha Ann Strait appears in the 1910 Crook County Census and was either divorced or widowed. Allen died March 4, 1908 and is buried in the Gray Butte Cemetery. He left an estate but did not have a grave stone ... only a small grave marker that said only "Alln Hash". | Hash, Allen (I395)

He was the son of John Nathan "Nathan" Young and Lucy Laura "Lucy" Fields. He married Deborah "Debbie" Moore Abt. 1860 in Owsley County, Kentucky. She was born Feb 1843 in Owsley County, Kentucky, and after 21 April 1917, as she applied for Larkin Young's widows pension on that date. There is a Widow's Application number but no certificate number, which leads me to believe that she probably died shortly after the application was made, but definitely before the application was approved and a certificate issued. She was the daughter of John W. Moore, Jr. and Lucretia Smith. 3833 | Note on Find a Grave: Calvin is the son of Pendleton Taylor and Catherine McDaniel Taylor. He was born in Grainger County, Tennessee and moved to Kentucky in 1858 with his parents. In 1858 after arriving in KY he married Julia Ann Shackelford of Breathitt County, the daughter of Abner Terry Shackelford and Nancy Ann Gossett. Calvin enlisted in the Union Army and died of typhoid fever shortly after. He had 2 children. ----------------------------- HANNAH TAYLOR ON THE TOMBSTONE IS CALVIN'S AUNT, NOT HIS WIFE OR DAUGHTER. Calvin's wife was Julia Ann Shackelford Taylor Cope and is burried in Cope Cemetery in Breathitt County. Calvin and Hannah are probably on the same tombstone because they died within a year and were buried next to each other. The footstone rocks still exist and their distance from the headstone indicate both graves were adults. This seems to confirm that Hannah was not an infant daughter of Calvin Taylor, but the wife of Orville Pinkney Taylor. Calvin is the son of Pendleton Taylor and Catherine McDaniel Taylor. | Taylor, Calvin Henderson (I1769)

Sarah was the daughter of George and Sarah Blankenbeckler. Their daughter, Sarah V. A. Hash was born in Smyth County, VA on 24 May 1862. On the 1860 Federal Census for Smyth County, VA, Calvin and his wife Sarah Anne are living with Sarah's parents, George and Sarah Blankenbeckler. My the 1870 Census for Marion, Smyth County, Sarah A. Hash and her 8 year old daughter Sarah V.A. Hash are living in the Thomas and Catharine Danold household, with no Calvin Hash to be found. On 16 May 1871 in Smyth County, Virginia, Sarah A. Hash, widowed, the daughter of Geo. and Sarah Blankenbeckler, would marry Seymore G. Atkins, also widowed. Calvin is said to have been a Civil War Veteran who fought for the Southern Confederate Army and who died during the course of that war. The Calvin Hash of this memorial is not to be confused with another Calvin Hash (b. 1888. d. 1941), also buried in Pine Branch Cemetery and whose father was Zachariah Hash & Lucinda Ward. 3836 | note on Find a Grave: Captain John Wilson a farmer and stock-grower of Station Camp, Estill County, KY, was born in said county, May 14, 1822. His father, Ebenezer Wilson, a native of Loudoun County, VA, was a son of Joseph and Liddie (Dodd) Wilson, natives of Virginia, who settled in Estill County, KY, about 1824. Ebenezer Wilson was reared on the farm in Virginia, married in that State, and came to Kentucky about 1812. He married Rhoda Dillingham, a member of the well-known Virginian family of that name. Five Children were born to their union, viz: Angelina, William D., John, Liddie J. and Delina. John Wilson, the third child, was reared on the farm and received a common school education. He followed farming until the outbreak of the late war, when he joined the Federal army as Captain of Company C, Eighth Kentucky Infantry, commanded by Col. Sidney M. Barnes. At the beginning of the war the ladies of Estill County made and presented to the Eighth Kentucky Infantry a flag, requesting that it should be born aloft and made a part of the history of the war. Col. Barnes presented the flag to Captain Wilson, which he cheerfully received, determining to comply with the request of the ladies who presented it. Captain Wilson adds: "At Lookout Mountain, where the Eighth Kentucky was engaged, it being in one of the columns on the extreme right nearest the palisade or top of said mountain, on the night of November 24, 1863, it lay above the Craven House and above any other command. Just before daylight on the 25th of November, Gen. Walter C. Whitaker, Brigade Commander, came to Col. Sid M. Barnes and said: 'Col. Barnes, have you got an officer that will volunteer to go and place the Eighth Kentucky flag on the top or peak of said mountain?' Said he: 'I could order them up, but will not, for it is a hazardous undertaking, but will be an honor to the one who gets there first.' The promise ever being fresh in my mind made to the ladies of Estill, I was not only ready and willing to go where ordered, but was ready to volunteer and go where my superior officers would not order me, to fulfill my promise to those ladies. Said I; 'General, I will go.' He turned tot he regiment and said: 'Boys, how many of you will volunteer to go with Capt. Wilson?' There were five others volunteered to go, to wit: Sergeant Harris H. Davis, of Company A; Sergeant Joseph Wagers, of Company B; Sergeant James Wood, of Company H; Private William Witt, of Company A, and Private Joseph Bradley, of Company I. And to us six belongs the honor of planting the first National Flag on the top or peak of Lookout Mountain, on the morning of November 25th, 1863, it being the highest flag planted during the war, being 2,400 feet above the level of the valley. We started immediately. Said Gen. Whitaker, 'take your flag, Captain.' I called to my Color Sergeant and asked him if he did not want to go and carry it; he shook his head and said no. I unbuckled my belt and gave him my sword, and told him to bring it up with him, I took the flag, and some fifteen or twenty minutes before sunrise I unfurled the flag on top of said mountain, calling forth-hearty cheers from below. January 18, 1864, we six got thirty days' leave of absence by order of Major Gen. George H. Thomas, for said deed, and I hereby enclose you a copy of mine: Headquarters Department of the Cumberland Chattanooga, Tenn., January 18, 1864 Special Field Orders,} Extract ∼ Died May 24th, 1896 The subject of this sketch was born in Estill county, Kentucky, May 14th, 1822 and resided here all of his life. He followed the occupation of farming up to the late rebellion when the country was calling for patriot men. It was then he showed his undaunted courage and love for his family and country and the esteem and confidence of his countrymen by being placed as Captain over 100 of his gallant old associates which position he still held to the close of the war. Making himself famous throughout the land by being the Hero of Lookout Mountain, placing the stars and stripes there in the face of the enemy which goes down in history as the battle above the clouds. After the war he came home and began his former occupation. He was an efficient, esteemed member of the Methodist church, having belonged since he was 16 years of age. He was made a Mason Sept. 20, 1961, and was honored by Masons wherever he was known for his loving and kind disposition, zeal for Masonry, and his ever ready and willing hand to assist the needy. Therefore, be it Resolved, 1st. That in the death of Bro. Wilson our O.D. Henderson Lodge No. 437, has lost a wise counselor and a true and faithful member, the county a worthy citizen, the church a consistent member and his family a kind, loving and devoted father. 2nd. That we, as Masons, deploring the untimely death of our dear brother, yet having faith in Him, who he served, hope in a coming day when our silver cord shall be loosed or the golden bowl be broken to meet him in that celestial world where sickness, death and parting are unknown. Faith, hope and charity are jewels he possessed, cherished and practiced. 3rd. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our lodge and home, Which can never be filled. God in his wisdom as recalled, The boon His love had given, And though the body slumbers here, The soul is safe in Heaven. 4th. That these resolutions be spread at large on the minutes of the lodge, published in the Masonic Home Journal and the Richmond Climax and a copy sent to the family of our deceased brother Inscription Hero of Battle of Look Out Mountain fought Nov 25, 1863. 3846 | Note on Find a Grave: Charles was the son of Charles Wilson Kratzer Sr. and Mary Jane Robinson. He was the youngest and only boy child in his family. His oldest sister Helen Julia Kratzer, Davis born in 1913- and another sister Margaret Josephine Kratzer, Gravett 1918-1975. In 1940 he served in the regular Army (Horse Calvary) and was honorably discharged in 1941. He married several times and could never settle down in one place for very long. His trade was a Linotype operator (Printer) as his father was before him. When uncle Charlie was in his late forties he lost his eye sight to glaucoma. He was a member of Inner Views, a support group for the blind. His eye seeing dog was a beautiful Golden Retriever Boomer. Uncle Charlie may have had his problems and would drift in and out of our lives many times, but it's when he went blind and had to finally settle down, that we really got to know him. Uncle Charlie, deep down was a really fun person, with a great sense of humor. He was a very easy going guy and never complained about anything. I remember when we had to take him to the hospital (Cancer) he was in so much pain, and never complained...he told some jokes on the way that made us laugh and forget for the moment that he was very sick. Memories are wonderful and we have many of those about our Uncle Charlie. When we admitted him in the hospital we never dreamed that God would take him so quickly, he died a few day later, and today is is still very much missed. We Love you Uncle Charlie. | Kratzer, Charles Wilson (I1703)
