3904 | note on Find a Grave: It is believed her first husband died in the war. I have her obit it doesn't say when she was born. In 1860 Rock Island County, Illinois, census her age was 12. Her d/cer said she was 86 when she died. Taken from the Muscatine Iowa Journal Wednesday Jan. 4, 1933 Mrs. O'Brien, 86, Taken By Death --------------------- Short Illness Ends Tuesday; Funeral Services Will Be Held Thursday. --------------- Mrs. Mary Jane O'Brien, 86 died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Nancy T. Bierman, 216 Gilbert street at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday after a short illness. Preceding her in death were her husband and 6 children. Surviving are the daughter, 12 grandchildren 21 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. The body is at the Bierman home where it will remain until 2:30 p.m. Thursday when funeral services will be conducted there. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. On her headstone it said she was born in 1846. In 1915 Muscatine County, Iowa, census she said she was born in Indiana, and her parents were born in West Virginia I'm sure she meant Virginia, and she was 68. 1930 Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa district 17 page 15; Mary J. O'Brien 84 wd. Indiana; Research Source (June Welsch) e-mail jiwelsch@machlink.com Arlene Swisher Solomon has a rolling pin that Mary Jane had made. It is made better then any you would buy today. The following story was written by Ramona Wingerter Froehner; My great great g/mother, Mary Jane Brewer O'Brien met her husband Edward O'Brien when he was a soldier in the Union Army. At that time Fairport Iowa, was a thriving busy river town. During the Civil War there was an Union Encampment of soldiers across the river from Fairport in Illinois. After their marriage they went to farming in Illinois, However, Edward was no farmer and they eventually gave up on it and came back to Iowa, settling in Muscatine. Edward was an educated man, and had a beautiful handwriting. He taught all his children to read and write. He loved books and frequently gave Mary Jane a book for her birthday. He had a good number of books, including Pilgrims Progress, and a first edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin. His children said their father never spoke of his family or his life before the Civil War. Both Edward and Mary Jane smoked pipes. In their later years they lived on his soldier's pension. Once a month he would go to town to get staples, and a few treats, some sardines for he and Mary Jane, and peppermint drops for their daughter Maggie. They kept a big garden all their lives, and in later years lived mostly on the potatoes and beans from the garden, and eggs for breakfast. Maintained by: Pastor Rachelle R. 3907 | note on Find a Grave: James Halsey is the son of William Halsey, JR., and Rachel Cobb. The 1850, 60 & 70 Censuses say James was born in Virginia. However, at the time of his birth his parents appear to have lived just across the border in what would become Allegheny, NC and which was still a part of Wilkes County at the time of his birth (see note below).* The Death Certificate of William Cecil, son of James verifies that James was born at Piney Creek, Alleghany County, NC. The various Federal Censuses were used to estimate the birth date of James: 1850 Census- age 57 (b. Abt. 1793); 1860 Census- age 65 (b. Abt. 1795); 1870 Census-age 76 (b. Abt. 1794). James Halsey married Patsy Peak around 1814 in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, Virginia according to "Halsey Genealogy" by David Halsey. The children from this union were as follows (based on "Halsey Genealogy" by Rufus Clinton Halsey): 1. Ahart Halsey 1814 – 1887 (m. Elizabeth Cox): His headstone says he was killed by lightening. 2. *Matilda "Millie" Halsey 1817 – 1913 (m. Samuel Cox). 3. *Malinda Halsey b. 1817(m. Daniel Daugherty in 1856. 4. Loucinda Halsey 1822 – 1887 (m. Dr William B. Parsons in 1846). 5. Morris "Marsh" Halsey 1825 – 1909 (m. Sophina Hash ca. 1847). 6. Olive Malinda Halsey 1827 – 1909 (m. Enoch Hash Sep 30, 1852). 7. Troy Halsey 1830 – 1857 (m. Polly Jane Hash ca. 1849). 8. Mary Polly Halsey 1832 – 1907 (m. Lazarus Hash in 1848). 9. William Cecil "Cease" Halsey 1839 – 1932 (m. Rebecca A. Hash). 10. Adah Ann Halsey 1839 – 1939. 11. Henry Halsey 1840 – 1923 (m. Mrs. Nancy Jane Stanford Miles, widow of William Jesse Miles). *Malinda and Matilda are said to have been twins. Based on the following evidence it appears that James and his wife Martha "Pattie" "Patsy" Halsey are buried in the William C. Halsey Cemetery: 1. The earliest verifiable burial was of J. N. Rutherford in 1877 , and who died about 6 years after James Halsey. Grimsley Halsey, the grandson of James and Patsy Halsey and son of Morris & Sophina Halsey, is the earliest verifiable Halsey who was buried there on 30 Jan 1892. 2. James' & Patsy's son, Morris Halsey, was buried in the cemetery in 1909, per "Halsey Genealogy," by Rufus Clinton Halsey. The original creator of this memorial has been told by his cousin 1x removed, Tommy Halsey, a living direct descendant of Morris Halsey who is his 1st great-grandfather, that Morris Halsey and his wife Sophina are indeed in the William C. Halsey Cemetery. Tommy has been to the cemetery several times during his life in his younger years, and he recalls seeing the fieldstone markers of Morris & Sophine Halsey. The author neglected to ask him who initially showed him the fieldstone markers. 3. Another son of James & Patsy Halsey, William Cecil "Cease" Halsey (after whom the cemetery is known today), was buried here in 1932 as well as his wife Rebecca in 1929 and some of their children (per New River Notes). 4. A year before James died in 1871, the 1870 census listed James as living next door to his son William Cecil. At this point in time Cecil declares he has no value in any real estate and has nothing of value in personal estate, while his father James has a real estate value of $800.00 and a personal estate value of what appears to be $909.00. 5. Rufus Clinton Halsey says James & his wife lived in "Mouth of Wilson, VA, 'Fox Knob.'" The William Cease Halsey Cemetery is the only known cemetery in the immediate Fox Knob area in which they lived. 6. Since James & Pasty lived by their son, William Cecil, it would be natural for them to be buried in what would later be known as the William Cease Halsey family cemetery. Although it needs yet to be verified, the author believes it was upon the land of James & Patsy that the cemetery was founded. *In 1799 the northern and western parts of Wilkes County became Ashe County. In 1859 the eastern part of the remainder of Ashe County became Alleghany County (wikipedia). Research & Bio by David Burns, M. 3910 | note on Find a Grave: Jane died after Oct 1812. She had 11 children with George Reeves: Jesse, Elizabeth, Mary, William, Ann, George Jr., Lucy, Prudence, Charity, John, and Susan. NEW INFO WYTHE CTY VA CHANCERY One item I have already found is a court document which provided the approximate date of death of Jane Burton Reeves. There are numerous dates of death entries online but I had never found a valid source. A Jane Reeves is listed on the Grayson County tax lists through 1816 which I believe could have been George Reeves Sr.'s widow but Jane Osborne Reeves, the widow of deceased George Reeves, Jr. did not remarry until 1818 and those tax lists may have been listing her instead. Within the 1821 chancery case, a copy of a statement for George Reeves, Sr.'s account contains a court order which details the death of George's widow before 1 April 1813 when the sale of the property she had received as her dower was recorded. Another document in that file explains that all of Jane Burton Reeves' personal property was given to her daughters to be divided among them. The Library of Virginia's Chancery Case Index continues to add more scanned documents for additional counties. This week I discovered a 236 page Wythe County chancery case which is based upon probate records of the 1821 suit Benjamin Austin et al vs the Administrators of George Reeves, Sr. of Grayson County, Virginia. The Wythe County index also includes two other cases pertaining to this Reeves' family, the 1815 "Matthew Dickey vs the Admins of George Reaves" (sic) and the 1833 case "George Reeves ETC vs James Cox ETC". | Burton, Jane (I2138)

The history of the New River area of North Carolina and southern Virginia records the tale of at least 3 Tory loyalists who were hung by Colonel Benjamin Cleveland in 1781. There are numerous variations of the story online although none seem to have detailed documented information. The 2011 post Hanging of a Loyalist named Reeves can be found on this blog where I provided all the information I was able to find about this story. The 3 loyalists who were hung were Capt. William Riddle, Zachariah Goss and an as yet unidentified Reeves individual. 3941 | Note on Find a Grave: Married to John "Johnie" Madden in the early 1920s, Minnie gave birth to 7 children of record. Their names are Mary Elizabeth (Madden) Smith, John Jr "Tootsie" Madden, William V. "Buddy" Madden, Raymond Madden, Evelyn (Madden) Corkins, Benny Lee Madden, and Anna Frances (Madden) Slagle. After the death of Johnie in 1944, she quickly married to Garland Wesley Roberts in Cincinnati, OH, to help her raise the children remaining at home. In about 1946, when son William had a daughter, Patricia, Minnie took on the responsibility of raising Tricia as well. Ann and Tricia grew up thinking of themselves as sisters. Benny apprenticed under Garland, who was an upholsterer, but quit the business shortly after Garland's death in 1967 because the business was willed to son-in-law Earnie Slagle instead of to Benny. Minnie did not survive long after Garland's death, following him to the grave only 18 months later. They both died in Columbus, Ohio, but were buried together in Richmond Cemetery, as this town was Minnie's birth place. | Lawson, Minnie Josephine (I1311)

3942 | Note on Find a Grave: Mary " Polly " Wells was the daughter of Elihu and Elizabeth Nancy Kilbourne Wells. She was married to Zachary Taylor Coldiron on February 2, 1868. She had three children from this union, William, Elihu, and John L. Coldiron. She married Albert E. Robinson on July 29, 1875. Note: Mary's 1st husband, Zachary Taylor Coldiron was killed during a coal strike. Info that follows is from family records. According to family members interviewed in 1968, Taylor was shot in a coal mining strike! He was a deputy to his Uncle, E.W. Robinson (Leah's husband). He had been sent down into to the mine arrest a man named Dezirn (sp?) who was down in the mine hiding out from being arrested. He was shot when he went alone down into the part of the mine where some of the more radical miners had set a camp to wait out the strike's end. Taylor felt he would be safe since he knew many of the strikers involved. He did not count on the high feelings of the men or that the badge he wore set him apart as one of the company. According to the Bible records of John D. Coldiron, he was shot on January 22, 1873 and He lived 18 days before expiring from his wounds. It is believed by the William Baker family that he was shot in the stomach. Zachary Taylor Coldiron burial site is unknown at this time. 1870 census Information Name: Mary Coldiron Age in 1870: 25 Birth Year: abt 1845 Birthplace: Virginia Dwelling Number: 266 Home in 1870: Precinct 1, Clay, Kentucky Race: White Gender: Female Occupation: Keeping House Cannot Write: Y Inferred Spouse: Taylor Coldiron Inferred Children: William Coldiron Lihue Coldiron Household Members: Name Age Taylor Coldiron 22 Mary Coldiron 25 William Coldiron 1 Lihue Coldiron 5/12 Contributor: D Briss (50010264) | Wells, Mary "Polly" (I212)

But, William "Sheep Bill" Halsey (for whom the cemetery was named, was Sylvester's son by Mary Young. The cemetery is located on what was Sheep Bill's farm, which he inherited from Sylvester. Bottom line, I would bet money that Sylvester, Mary, and Caroline are all also buried there, but no grave markers have survived. This cemetery, by the way, has essentially disappeared - it was never protected by the later property owners who allowed their cattle to roam over the cemetery and gradually destroy the stones. | Young, Mary "Polly" (I2309)
