3955 Note on Find a Grave:
Joseph Wiley Stanford was the son of Father Stanford (1778-1835) and Mary W. "Polly" MNU Stanford (1785-1854) from Ashe County, North Carolina. Father Stanford (first name unknown, but it is believed to have been Wiley), was born in about 1778 possibly in Isle of Man (Ireland). Please note that Joseph had the middle name of Wiley, Joseph named one of his sons Wiley and Joseph's brother Hiram used the middle initial of W. This was Irish tradition to name the middle name of the sons after the father's first name. Joseph Wiley Stanford married Mary Nancy Phipps in Grayson County, Virginia in about 1830. Joseph Wiley Stanford had only one known sibling, Hiram W. Stanford (1812-1892), who died in Campbell County, Tennessee.

Husband of Mary Nancy Phipps Stanford (1807-1876).

The children of Joseph Wiley Stanford (1806-1885) and Mary Nancy Phipps Stanford (1807-1876) were:

Frances Stanford 1832
Mary (Polly) Stanford 1833
Jane Stanford 1836
Nancy Jane Stanford 1841
David Stanford 1842
Adeline Stanford 1843
Rosamond Stanford 1845
Wiley C. Stanford 1847
Joseph Melvin Stanford 1849

Joseph Wiley Stanford's only known sibling was:

i. Joseph Wiley Stanford (born 1806 in Grayson County, Virginia; died 1885 in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson, Virginia). FAG #88440209.

ii. Hiram W. Stanford (born 1812 in Grayson County, Virginia; died 1892 in La Follette, Campbell, Tennessee). FAG #25852148.

In the 1840 and 1850 Censuses, Joseph was found living near his brother, Hiram W. Stanford in District 19, Grayson County, Virginia. Please note that in the 1840 Census, Hiram W. Stanford was living with their mother, widowed in Grayson County, Virginia. Their Father died about 1835. In the 1850 Census, Hiram W. Stanford was living with his wife, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Howell Stanford and their youngest son, William Calvin "Cal" Stanford, age 5. They were also living with Charles G. Taft, age 55.

In about 1857, his brother Hiram W. Stanford later moved away with his wife and their first child to Stecoah, Cherokee, North Carolina (1860 Census) and later he moved to La Follette, Campbell, Tennessee (in 1870 and 1880 Censuses) in about 1863. Joseph remained in Grayson County, Virginia until his death in 1885.

Joseph Wiley Stanford was my 3g-Uncle, Gary W. Stanford.

Kennedy Columbus Ward was born in Grayson County, Virginia on 14 Mar 1849 to John Hash Ward and Evalina (Hash) Ward. Kenneth Columbus Ward and Frances "Frankie" Lane, the daughter of Moses Lane and Elizabeth Wingate, were married on 10 Jun 1866 in Grayson County, Virginia.

Kenneth Columbus Ward and his wife, Frankey (Lane) Ward, are the only two known burials in the K. C. Ward Cemetery. The K. C. Cemetery is named after Kenneth Columbus Ward. Kenneth Columbus Ward has only a field stone as his marker. I do not know if his wife, Frankey, has a fieldstone or a gravestone, but I suspect it is also only a field stone. There are other fieldstones in the cemetery all of which are unknowns (all info per NewRiver Notes.com). Kenny is referred to as "Cain" Ward on his Death Certificate. Cain may be a corruption of "Ken" with the writer spelling the name phonetically as he heard it.

Married Abigail Osborne
daughter of Capt Enoch OSBORNE

father was Zachariah Goss
Mother Ann Riddle

John Goss was the son of Zachariah Goss who is recorded as being hung as a tory by Colonel Benjamin Cleveland in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1781.
The history of the New River area of North Carolina and southern Virginia records the tale of at least 3 Tory loyalists who were hung by Colonel Benjamin Cleveland in 1781. There are numerous variations of the story online although none seem to have detailed documented information.
The 2011 post Hanging of a Loyalist named Reeves can be found on this blog where I provided all the information I was able to find about this story.
The 3 loyalists who were hung were Capt. William Riddle, Zachariah Goss and an as yet unidentified Reeves individual.

Married to John "Johnie" Madden in the early 1920s, Minnie gave birth to 7 children of record. Their names are Mary Elizabeth (Madden) Smith, John Jr "Tootsie" Madden, William V. "Buddy" Madden, Raymond Madden, Evelyn (Madden) Corkins, Benny Lee Madden, and Anna Frances (Madden) Slagle. After the death of Johnie in 1944, she quickly married to Garland Wesley Roberts in Cincinnati, OH, to help her raise the children remaining at home. In about 1946, when son William had a daughter, Patricia, Minnie took on the responsibility of raising Tricia as well. Ann and Tricia grew up thinking of themselves as sisters. Benny apprenticed under Garland, who was an upholsterer, but quit the business shortly after Garland's death in 1967 because the business was willed to son-in-law Earnie Slagle instead of to Benny. Minnie did not survive long after Garland's death, following him to the grave only 18 months later. They both died in Columbus, Ohio, but were buried together in Richmond Cemetery, as this town was Minnie's birth place.

3975 Note on Find a Grave:
Mary " Polly " Wells was the daughter of Elihu and Elizabeth Nancy Kilbourne Wells. She was married to Zachary Taylor Coldiron on February 2, 1868. She had three children from this union, William, Elihu, and John L. Coldiron. She married Albert E. Robinson on July 29, 1875.

Note: Mary's 1st husband, Zachary Taylor Coldiron was killed during a coal strike. Info that follows is from family records.

According to family members interviewed in 1968, Taylor was shot in a coal mining strike! He was a deputy to his Uncle, E.W. Robinson (Leah's husband). He had been sent down into to the mine arrest a man named Dezirn (sp?) who was down in the mine hiding out from being arrested.
He was shot when he went alone down into the part of the mine where some of the more radical miners had set a camp to wait out the strike's end. Taylor felt he would be safe since he knew many of the strikers involved. He did not count on the high feelings of the men or that the badge he wore set him apart as one of the company. According to the Bible records of John D. Coldiron, he was shot on January 22, 1873 and He lived 18 days before expiring from his wounds. It is believed by the William Baker family that he was shot in the stomach.

Zachary Taylor Coldiron burial site is unknown at this time.

NOTES FROM RESEARCHER 2016
We don't know where Sylvester Halsey, Caroline Anderson Halsey Cox, or Sylvester's first wife, Mary Young Halsey are buried.
But, William "Sheep Bill" Halsey (for whom the cemetery was named, was Sylvester's son by Mary Young.
The cemetery is located on what was Sheep Bill's farm, which he inherited from Sylvester.
Bottom line, I would bet money that Sylvester, Mary, and Caroline are all also buried there, but no grave markers have survived.
This cemetery, by the way, has essentially disappeared - it was never protected by the later property owners who allowed their cattle to roam over the cemetery and gradually destroy the stones.

3996 note on Find a Grave:
ohn Bowman was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina the son of John Bowman Sr. and Sarah Smith. He married Ann Hamilton on March 25th ,1813 in Madison county, Kentucky.
He and the Bowman families were one of the first settlers of Clay county Kentucky and knew and hunted with Daniel Boone.
In about 1834 John and Ann moved their family to Morgan county, Indiana, then to Putnam county after 1840.They lived just west of Bell Union on East county Road 600 South at about 6280 where I believe there are the remains of their old home.
Most of John and Ann's younger children all went to Asbury Academy or College where he had a scholarship that was continued even after his death in 1852 through his son Alfred.

I believe the other daughter of John and Ann Bowman was Serelda Bowman born in 1825.She married Alexander Crawley December 29, 1841 in Morgan county, Indiana. She died sometime between 1851 and 1857.
Their children were Rhonda, James and William.
There is an S.A. Bowman born April 3,1825 and died January 16, 1856 buried in Irons Cemetery, Bellville, Hendricks county, Indiana.

4000 Note on Find a Grave:
Patrick Hamilton was the son of Rev. William Hamilton and an unknown wife. (Some say William's first wife was Alice Mann ) He along with his father were soldiers of John Hay's 9th Virginia Regiment under Colonel Thomas Hughart. Patrick also fought in the early Indian wars of the Ohio valley as a member of the Kentucky militia from 1790-1795 under Josiah Harmar and Arthur St. Clair. Being one of the lucky people to escape St. Clair's defeat.

Patrick also was an Ensign in the Augusta county , VA. militia in March of 1779.

Patrick along with his father William and James Moore, husband of Eleanor Hamilton, are listed in the Randolph County and Harrison Co. History (WV). Patrick was appointed one of the first Captains of the militia in 1784 and Colonel in 1787.

The cemetery is located on land that was part of the original Hamilton homestead (I think it was part of Lincoln or Madison County, or it could have been Clay or Owsley) back in those days. A member of the Hamilton family has lived on the land from the time it was homesteaded until at least the 1980s. I don't know if anyone lives there now. The original settler, Patrick Hamilton, and his wife are buried at the back corner of the cemetery along with a few other early family members. Their graves are marked only with plain rocks, and I don't know anyone still alive today who remembers whose grave is whose. When I was a kid, we would put flowers on the graves several times a year, and I'm sure my grandparents knew exactly who was buried at each rock. I only wish I had been more interested back then and written it all down. Except for these earliest Hamiltons, the rest of the graves do have carved headstones that identify who is buried there..
