4058 | note on Find a Grave: Sylvester C. Halsey Born: 1803 in Grayson, Va Died: 12 Jul 1856 in Grayson, Va Married: Jul 1828 in Grayson, Va Parents: William Halsey Rachel Cobb married 1 Mary Young 2nd wife Caroline Anderson FROM RESEARCHER 2016 We don't know where Sylvester Halsey, Caroline Anderson Halsey Cox, or Sylvester's first wife, Mary Young Halsey are buried. But, William "Sheep Bill" Halsey (for whom the cemetery was named, was Sylvester's son by Mary Young. The cemetery is located on what was Sheep Bill's farm, which he inherited from Sylvester. Bottom line, I would bet money that Sylvester, Mary, and Caroline are all also buried there, but no grave markers have survived. This cemetery, by the way, has essentially disappeared - it was never protected by the later property owners who allowed their cattle to roam over the cemetery and gradually destroy the stones. 4060 | Note on Find a Grave: The cemetery is located on land that was part of the original Hamilton homestead (I think it was part of Lincoln or Madison County, or it could have been Clay or Owsley) back in those days. A member of the Hamilton family has lived on the land from the time it was homesteaded until at least the 1980s. I don't know if anyone lives there now. The original settler, Patrick Hamilton, and his wife are buried at the back corner of the cemetery along with a few other early family members. Their graves are marked only with plain rocks, and I don't know anyone still alive today who remembers whose grave is whose. When I was a kid, we would put flowers on the graves several times a year, and I'm sure my grandparents knew exactly who was buried at each rock. I only wish I had been more interested back then and written it all down. Except for these earliest Hamiltons, the rest of the graves do have carved headstones that identify who is buried there. from Melody Jones | Gay, Ann Agnes (I2464)

4062 | Note on Find a Grave: The First record of Cornelius Bowman SR is in the Book, "Colonial Soldiers of Virginia" in 1764 he is listed there in the same regiment right next to one "Thomas Pointer" The next record of Cornelius besides the marriage record to Susannah Pointer/Painter in Rockbridge County VA is in Wilkes County NC where he preached at Roans Creek Baptist Church. After leaving Wilkes County he then traveled to what was then Washington County NC now TN and is found in court records as a Justice. Date of Birth and death taken from the Bible of his son Rev Thomas Bowman He then shows up in Early Clay County History in 1815 records reflect in the Methodist Associational minutes that he himself along with his sons, Elisha, Thomas, Jacob and Elijah were Methodist Ministers.. Source the Wesleyan University, Owensboro Kentucky In 1818 Cornelius SR sued the heirs of Alexander Murphy for land in what is now Owsley County Kentucky in Chancery Court Clay County KY this is a 69 page court case along with the survey of his land and X marked the spot where he lived which is where us Bowman researchers believe is near the Betty Bowman Branch in Owsley County KY. His grave has never been found to date. | Bowman, Cornelius "Neal" Sr. (I69)

4063 | note on Find a Grave: The name of Thursey (Phipps) Reedy's father is not listed on her death certificate, but her death certificate lists her mother's maiden name as Susan Anderson. Thanks to a correction by Findagrave member Sandy Reese, her father has been identified as David Phipps of Grayson County, Virginia. Thursey married Jacob Reedy in Ashe County, NC on Feb 22, 1857, and had at least 6 children: Thomas L. (b. abt. 1859, NC), William Ambros, (b. 1866, VA), unnamed girl (b. abt. Feb 1870, WV), Susan S. (b. abt. 1871, WV), Harvey Tilden (b. 1876, WV), and Ruth Ann (Patterson) (1879-1911). Given the large space between Thomas and William I think there must have been more. The family lived in McDowell County, WV, in both 1870 and 1880, but by 1900 they were in Center Township, Greene County, MO. At the time of the 1900 census, Thursey had given birth to 11 children, of whom only 5 were still living. | Phipps, Thursey Ann (I2077)

4069 | note on Find a Grave: Thomas was born in the Watauga River Settlement, Virginia The Watauga settlement was south of the Holston River, on the Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers in the colony of North Carolina. There were three main settlements in the area known as Watauga, Carter's Valley, and Nolichucky. Most settlers came down the Great Valley through Virginia, while others went through gaps in the Unaka Range from North Carolina. The settlers believed they had settled in Virginia. However, all except the North Holston community were in North Carolina on land that belonged to the Cherokee Nation. They were told to relocate but instead negotiated with the Cherokee to lease the land. | Bowman, Thomas (I1950)

4073 | Note on Find a Grave: Unfortunately for William Halsey, Sr's descendants, very little is known about him; to date no one has been able to unravel the mysteries surrounding his elusive life. We do know that William Halsey, Sr. was the son of Recompense Halsey and Hannah Jagger and that baptism records, as will be noted below, exist which connect him with two of his three known children. There are a host of inconsistencies among those who have an interest in William Sr regarding his date of his birth, the proposed names of his wife, where he was after 1770 and the date of his death. Authors such as David Halsey give 1723 in Morris County, New Jersey as William's birth date and place. Many amateur genealogists have his death as occurring exactly on 21 Feb 1832 in Morris County, New Jersey. However, the full date is doubtful, and since it is identical to the death date of his son William Jr., they are likely confusing William Sr. with William Jr. The Halsey Genealogy by Rufus Clinton Halsey has no dates for William Sr. and states "Wife Not known."(*1) Of William's wife, the Halsey Genealogy Since 1395 A.D., Book Two by David Halsey gives the estimated date of 1743 as their marriage and also says the wife's name is unknown.(*2) The current author would suggest a marriage date closer to 1752 when their first known child, John Halsey, was baptized, say 1750-1752.(*3) Hypothetically this could give a birth date for William closer to 1730-1732 instead of the more common date of 1723. If William, Sr. was born in 1723 he would have been born in Long Island and not in New Jersey which is universally claimed as his birthplace. However, if the 1895 Halsey Genealogy is correct with their 1830 time frame for Recompense's move to New Jersey, the proposed later birth date for William, Sr. would indicate a birth in New Jersey.(*4) We do know William Sr. shows up in the records of the First Church at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey identified as father in the baptism of two of his three known children - John (bapt. 15 Oct 1752) and Phebe (bapt. 10 Jan 1756). But the name of the mother is never mentioned.(*3) Morris County, New Jersey took a census of real estate owners, a.k.a. "freeholders," in the year 1752. It was published in the True Democrat Banner in 1887.(*5) The preface to the list states, "A list of several freeholders...taken by virtue of a rule of the supreme court by John Ford, Sheriff of the County of Morris, this thirtieth first day of August, A. D. 1752." The list for Hanover Township contains the name of "Wm. Halsey."(*5) One half month later on 15 Oct 1752, William's son John was baptized in the first church at Hanover.(*3) The old 1895 Halsey Genealogy contains the following information on William, Sr: His name appears in list of voters of Morris County in 1753, and in 1752-1756; had children baptized by Dr. Green in Hanover. Sept. 25, 1770, he mortgages to Daniel Wick 53 acres of land at Parsippany (or Troy)…. (Book B, pg. 12, Morris Co. Mortgages). His name frequently occurs on the Court minutes of Morris County until just before the Rev. War when it disappears. He probably removed about this time to North Carolina.(*4) The hypothesis that William, Sr. removed to North Carolina before the war, as his son William, Jr. would also do after the Revolution, has no evidence to support it. Rachel (Cobb) Halsey, the wife of William Halsey, Jr, stated in her application for her husband's Revolutionary War pension, "...near the close of the War, on about the year Seventeen hundred and Eighty two, he returned to his Father's house." Rachel's statement is worded in such a manner that it appears to presuppose that William Sr was still living in about 1783 when the war ended. Otherwise, why state that William Jr returned to his father's house after the war?(*6) There is also said to be evidence that William Sr was still in Morris County, NJ after the war. In an old Genealogy.com post an Allen Niles states, "Tax records for Morris Co NJ show him (or son) still there as of 1788…"(*7) The current author as of yet has never had opportunity to view any of these documents. Various court records and land Deeds also need to be examined. In the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ, Part II, From 1742-1885: The Combined Registers it is recorded that William Halsey Sr. is still living in 1770 (p. 97). The Combined Registers had been published in 1885. It indicates William had married but no marriage date or name of spouse is given. It also names two of his children, John & Phebe, along with their birth dates. While these genealogy records appear to have been added to the original church records, it is interesting to note no new information was added to William Sr and his progeny except to note he had been alive 15 years prior to publishing the registers. William Sr's only other known child is William, Jr. who was born 23 Mar 1760. His name does not appear in the Hanover Church records. His exact birth date is established by the Bible record contained in William Halsey, Jr's Revolutionary War Pension File.(*6) Two names are commonly given among amateur genealogists for William Halsey, Sr's wife, Jemima Sanford/Stanford and Mary Pierce. Both names have been repeated ad nauseum for years, but always without any documented evidence. A comment on the Genealogy.com forum states, "In the Allegheny County NC Heritage Book William Halsey's wife's name is given as Jemima Sanford. The entry was written by Alice Marie Halsey Sturgill and Ava Ruth Halsey Busic, daughters of John Reed Halsey and Flossye Robbins Halsey of Piney Creek. Of course these books are only as accurate as the submissions, but are usually give you a good place to start."(*8) It appears that entry in the Allegheny County Heritage Book was a miss-remembering or a confounding of two separate individuals - a father and a son. David Halsey in his Halsey Genealogy, states that the son of William Halsey, Sr, John Halsey, "married Sanford, Jemima (Stanford?)."(*2) With the name of Mary Pierce, again no evidence has ever been presented. The current author himself has never been able to find any documented evidence of either Jemima Sanford or Mary Pierce being the wife of William Halsey, Sr, and no one has ever provided him with any such documentation even though he has requested it in the past. 4085 | Note on Find a Grave: Weldon Monroe Hash was born in 1866 in Grayson County, Virginia, the son of Zebedee Hash and Frances Hackler. He married his 1st cousin Sarah Ann Hash in 1886 in Grayson County, and they had 10 children. Sarah died in 1914. Mollie Bates Null married Jacob Theodore Edwards (1888-1914) in 1909 in Smyth County, Virginia, and they had 2 children. Jacob died in 1914, 3 months prior to Sarah Hash's death. Jacob and Sarah are both buried in the same cemetery in Smyth County. After the deaths of Sarah and Jacob, Weldon and Mollie married and moved to Albemarle County, Virginia and had 7 additional children. Mollie died in 1935 in Albemarle County. Weldon died in 1938 in Albemarle County. At the time of his death, 14 of his 17 children were still living, with 13 referenced in his obituary (daughter Ethel is not mentioned). Children (with Sarah Ann Hash): 1- Claudia Jane Hash (1887-1975) married 1907 David Crockett Calhoun (1884-1931). 2- Clara Ellen Hash (1889-1949) married 1913 Adam Franklin Feazell (1887-1947). 3- Maude Rebecca Hash (1891-1985) married Reuben James Calcutt (1895-1967). 4- Edgar Peyton Hash (1893-1923). 5- Walter Fred Hash (1896-1957) married 1940 Edna Belle Brooks Evans (1892-1984). 6- Zena Louise Hash (1898-1973) married Chester Williams (1898-1973). 7- Myrtle Irene Hash (1901-1953) married Leslie Alfred Redford (1894-1961). 8- Albert A. Hash (1905- ). 9- Virginia Mamie Hash (1907-1937) married 1927 Thaddius Joel Reavis (1906-1993). 10- Leroy Weldon Hash (1908-1966). Step-children (children of Jacob Theodore Edwards and Mollie Bates Null): 1- Carl Jasper Edwards (1913-2004) married Lydia Mae Marrs (1911-1999). 2- Jakie Thelma Edwards (1914-2010) married Whitfield Lee Bryant, Sr. (1907-1989). Children (with Mollie Bates Null): 1- Earl Hash (1917-2006) married 1946 Ruby Kathleen Fisher (1927-2004). 2- Frankie Jane Hash (1919-1949) married 1937 George William Woodson, Jr. (1914-1954). 3- Dorothy Lorene Hash (1920-1983) married 1939 Burnest Farish Dudley (1918-1975) married 1948 Harry Edward Camden (1920-1974) married 1978 Marvin Edward Floyd (1905-1992). 4- Marion Estelle Hash (1922-2006) married 1938 Wesley Brown Morris (1900-1955) married Armstrong. 5- Ethel P. Hash (1924-1958). 6- Guy Emmett Hash, Sr. (1926-1992) married 1948 Mary Katherine Marshall (1930-1999). 7- Blaine Whitfield Hash (1929-1995) married 1950 Dorothy Mae Ralston (1931-2018). For the 1920 census, children from all 3 marriages were living together: Walter, Albert, Mamie, and Leroy from the marriage of Weldon and Sarah; Carl and Jakie from the marriage of Jacob and Mollie; and Earl and Frankie from the marriage of Weldon and Mollie. The burial marker for son Edgar gives his birth year as 1900, but the birth is 1 Jan 1893 in Edgar's birth record. Son Albert probably died between the 1920 census enumeration and 1938 when he his not referenced as a survivor in Weldon's obituary. 4086 | Note on Find a Grave: Wesley Anderson was born about 1823 in North Carolina. He probably died about 1850 in Grayson County, Virginia. His daughter Lutitia was born about Mar 1850 in Grayson County, and Wesley is not listed with the family for the Sep 1850 census. In the 1862 death record for daughter Dianna, the informant is listed as sister A. M. Anderson. Daughter Lutitia probably died between 1874 and 1889 when her husband Phillip Cress is listed as widowed when he remarries. In the 1970 book by Lella Gertrude Saylors, Wesley's name is listed as Cam Anderson. In the death record for granddaughter Ora A. Anderson, her father (James Campbell Anderson) has his name recorded as Cam Anderson. Maybe Wesley's middle name was Campbell. Children: 1- A. Maria Anderson (1845- ). 2- Dianna Anderson (1847-1862). 3- James Campbell Anderson (1848-1923). 4- Lutitia Anderson Cress [Crouse] (1850- ). Children Benjamin m Rutha Hash Ahart m Mary Ann Hash Greenberry m 1 Matilda Weaver 2 Maisie Porter NOTES FOR MATILDA FROM PHIPPS WEBSITE The following record refers to the estate of Asa and Rebecca Weaver of Ashe County, North Carolina. Mary S. Phipps was appointed an administrator, and a bond was filed with security given by Fielden Phipps and R.B. Phipps. Asa Weaver is said to have lived from 1823 to 1892. Fielden Phipps (1848-1918) was a son of Greenberry Phipps (1815-1889) of Ashe County, who married Matilda Weaver (apparently 1817-about 1864). Fielden married another Weaver, that being Mary Selena Weaver (1854-1937). From Ashe County, North Carolina Executor Record Book, 1869-1919, p. 64: North Carolina Ashe County In Superior Court Oct. 4th 1897 On Motion and it being shown to the Satisfaction of the Court that Asa Weaver and Rebecca A Weaver late of Ashe County is dead and not having left any last Will and Testament and upon application and it being further Shown to the Court that Mary. S. Phipps and J. M. Sawyers are proper persons to administer on Said Estate. It is therefore ordered and adjudged by the Court that Mary. S. Phipps and J. M. Sawyers be and that they are hereby appointed Administrators of the aforesaid Estate they having come into Court and Filed their Bond with Fielden Phipps and R. B. Phipps as Security and qualified as the law directs P. Blevins, C.S.C. Unconfirmed secondary sources identify Asa Weaver as a son of Edward Weaver (1791-1868) who married Tamzon Ballou, known as Tamsy. Asa is said to have been a brother of the Matilda Weaver who married Greenberry Phipps. One especially interesting source is the Owen Meredith Ballou webpage.
