4556 | The Sturgill Family in America: A preliminary history. David Andrew Sturgill, 1960. Pages 20 NOTE: The family of Francis Sturgill Sr. and his wife, Rebecca Hash, has been established beyond doubt from official records and known relationships between their descendants. The writer has personally interviewed about fifteen of their great grand children six of who were still living. When Francis died in 180? he was known to be living on the New River farm shown in Ashe Co. Deeds as the "Wells place". This farm was in five tracts, tho of which had been purchased from Zacharia Wells. The other three tracts were granted to Francis by the State on grants # 3,4, and 5 in Ashe Se This farm is known locally as the McMillan farm or as the BIG ROCK farm since it lies directly across New River from a cliff of this name. After the death of his father, Francis Jr. started buying out the shares of his brothers and sisters since there was no will, It is doubtful if Francis Jr. lived on this farm after he marries since the census records from 1810-30 show Rebecca as head of the family and lists only her younger daughters. In 1858 Francis Jr. sold this farm and the adjoining farm, where he probably lived, to Taliaferro Witcher and then moved to Helton Creek. Rebecca is shown living with him in 1840 so she was probably buried in the Sturgill cemetery on Felton creek when she died in 1842. In Ashe Co. Deed book "C", Page 259, dated 1828, William Jones and his wife Jane deeded their share of the estate of Francis Sturgill Sr. to Francis Sturgill Jr. and James Sturgill, his brothers. This deed states that their share was 1/11th of the estate thus indicating that there were 11 children. Deeds from the other ten children were fount but some of them were difficult to trace, James deed his share to William Weaver Jr. (bro-in-law) who in turn deeded it to Rebecca Sturgill, (mother-in-law) who then deeded it to Francis Jr. some of the heirs made two deeds to the estate. Timothy Perkins also deeded to Francis Jr. a claim to this same estate but no explanation for his claim was found unless he had married a daughter who died before her father. Perkins was buried in the Sturgill cometary on Helton creek. | Sturgill, Ann (I1991)

4566 | This memorial originally reflected Mary Romal as the wife of Joseph Phipps (1730 - 1769). The current manager and author of the Bio of this memorial has removed Mary Romal's name from this memorial because there are no documents to support the fact that Mary Romal was the name of Joseph Phipps' wife. The origin of the Mary Romal tradition is unknown to the present author. However, the Phipps genealogy compiled and published by John C Mullins in 1982 and entitled "The Phipps Family of N.C. and VA" (pp. 3-4) gives us a glimpse of this tradition, possibly even its origin. Mullins says that in 1919, at age 74, Roberts Sanders Phipps of Guilford County, NC mistakenly identified Mary Romal as his "grate grate grandmother" (p. 3) when in fact she was his grandmother, the wife of Samuel Phipps, 1788-1867 (pp. 4 & 346). Mary Romal married Samuel Phipps on 21 Apr 1814 in Guilford County, NC. Mullins gives the following data for Mary Romal: Mary "Polly" Romal b. 23 Dec 1797. d. 14 Sep 1883." Both Samuel and Mary are buried in the Alamance Church Cemetery, Guilford Co., NC (p. 346). Here is a link to the Mary Romal Phipps memorial: Mary "Polly" Romal Phipps I took possession of this memorial some time ago when it was up for grabs. If anyone has any documented information or family tradition pro or con for this memorial please send it to me via the "Edit" system for this memorial. Or if you have family documents of any type relating to the wife of Joseph Phipps, please click on my name (David) at the bottom of this web page and send it to my e-mail noted near the top of my Profile page. The sheriff said the pair told him they had killed R. Boyd Stamper, 40, a prisoner slain from ambush in front of the home of his father-in-law, Taylor Brewer, as he was going to visit his two children. Boyd Stamper who is not related to the sheriff, was in custody of Jailer Omer Booth and Deputy Sheriff Geobel Rice, of Clark county. He was awaiting trail for the alleged slaying of Kelly Shackelford in a school election fight last July. Sheriff Stamper was unable to give a motive for the shooting. He said he found the body “simply riddled with butter holes.” Booth said that as he and Rice left the car in front of the Stamper home a few miles from Slade, several shots rang out and Stamper fell. The officers and Carl Maze, Stamper’s nephew, fled to the woods, became separated, and later met at Slade. Unfamiliar with the country, Booth and Rice decided after their meeting in Slade that it would be futile to attempt to get back to investigate the shooting. Stamper was taken to Winchester in April facing an arson charge, in addition to the charge resulting from the shooting of Shackelford. He had also been under a peace bond. 4585 | Two Are Jailed In Slaying Case Clark County Prisoner Killed In Wolfe While Visiting Children Campton, Ky, June 30 – (AP) – John Clair and Arlie Hatton were held in the Wolfe county jail here today under charges of murder following their surrender to Sheriff Fred Stamper who said they made the simple statement they had killed R. Boyd Stamper, 40, a prisoner who fell in a surprise rain of bullets in front of his home as he arrived in custody of Clark county officers for a visit to his two children. Sheriff Stamper said the men added nothing to the statement and that he told them he had no prerogative but to put them in jail. The sheriff later went to the home of Boyd Stamper, who is not a relation of his, and said he found the body “just full of bullet holes.” Asked how many shots had struck the man, Sheriff Stamper replied: “That would be hard to tell – he was simply riddled.” The sheriff was unable to say what had precipitated the trouble and did not know whether the two men and Boyd Stamper had ever harbored ill feeling. “I didn’t ask them anything much about it,” said the sheriff. Jailer Omer Booth and Deputy Sheriff Goebel Rice, of Clark county, had taken Boyd Stamper, held in the Clark county jail to await trail in Breathitt county on a killing charge, into Wolfe county on an order of Circuit Judge J. Brack Howard, Royalton, to see the children and take them some fruit. The Clark officers were waiting in an automobile nearby when the shots rang out. Lexington Herald-Leader, Lexington, Kentucky.
