- Gary was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on January 20, 1991. He was an officer for the Stanford Police Department, Stanford, Ky. Gary was a 20 year veteran in law enforcement.
Gary was survived by his wife Carolyn Sue Noe Kidwell, daughters Kimberly Kidwell Maggard, Kristi Kidwell McGuffey, a son Mikel Ray Kidwell, his parents Elmer and Bernice Kidwell, four sisters, Linda Brock, Joyce Leece, Wanda Pettit, and Rita Benge, a brother Larry Kidwell, a half sister Phyllis Pingleton, a half brother Fred Lear. Gary was also survived by a granddaughter Kourtney Maggard.

Notes: Patrolman Gary Kidwell was shot and killed while making a traffic stop. The suspect was known to Patrolman Kidwell to have several drinking related arrests. As Patrolman Kidwell approached the car the suspect shot him with a .357 caliber handgun. The man fled but was apprehended after a shootout with a neighboring agency. The man was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He was denied parole in 2003 and again in 2012. Patrolman Kidwell had served with the Stanford Police Department for 20 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, son, parents, two brothers, five sisters, and six grandchildren.
