- note on Find a Grave:
James M Ryles headstone is mostly not legible but the bottom reads "his wife Oct 22 1860" which matches with his first wife Mary Frances Smith Ryles Phipps birthdate. It is probable that she is buried in the same grave as James [1]
- LKH note:
Mary Frances Smith, first married James Ryles. They had at least three children.
In the 1840 census she is a widow counted in the household of her daughter of son-in-law, John and Ada (Ryles) Brock in Brewer, Muskogee County, Oklahoma.
This matches her application for widow's benefits for Isaiah Phipps Civil War pension for which she applied from Okalahoma on 16 January 1933. Isaiah first applied from Kentucky on 10 Oct 1882 for invalid pension benefits. Application No.462111. Mary's application No. 1729.982.
Phipps, Isaiah: service: E 14 Ky. Cav.
