NOTE: The family of Francis Sturgill Sr. and his wife, Rebecca Hash, has been established beyond doubt from official records and known relationships between their descendants. The writer has personally interviewed about fifteen of their great grand children six of who were still living.
When Francis died in 180? he was known to be living on the New River farm shown in Ashe Co. Deeds as the "Wells place". This farm was in five tracts, tho of which had been purchased from Zacharia Wells. The other three tracts were granted to Francis by the State on grants # 3,4, and 5 in Ashe Se This farm is known locally as the McMillan farm or as the BIG ROCK farm since it lies directly across New River from a cliff of this name.
After the death of his father, Francis Jr. started buying out the shares of his brothers and sisters since there was no will, It is doubtful if Francis Jr. lived on this farm after he marries since the census records from 1810-30 show Rebecca as head of the family and lists only her younger daughters. In 1858 Francis Jr. sold this farm and the adjoining farm, where he probably lived, to Taliaferro Witcher and then moved to Helton Creek. Rebecca is shown living with him in 1840 so she was probably buried in the Sturgill cemetery on Felton creek when she died in 1842.
In Ashe Co. Deed book "C", Page 259, dated 1828, William Jones and his wife Jane deeded their share of the estate of Francis Sturgill Sr. to Francis Sturgill Jr. and James Sturgill, his brothers. This deed states that their share was 1/11th of the estate thus indicating that there were 11 children. Deeds from the other ten children were fount but some of them were difficult to trace, James deed his share to William Weaver Jr. (bro-in-law) who in turn deeded it to Rebecca Sturgill, (mother-in-law) who then deeded it to Francis Jr. some of the heirs made two deeds to the estate. Timothy Perkins also deeded to Francis Jr. a claim to this same estate but no explanation for his claim was found unless he had married a daughter who died before her father. Perkins was buried in the Sturgill cometary on Helton creek.
