  • Notes
    • Note on Find a Grave:

Lydia was a daughter of Francis Sturgill, Rev War Vet and Rebecca Hash.

Born in Montgomery Cty Va in today's Cox's Chapel area of Grayson Cty Va.
She lived within miles of the Grayson Cty Va and Alleghany Cty (was Ashe Cty til 1859) NC border.

There is no proof for her middle name to be Nancy.
She had a sister Nancy Sturgill Osborne who already had the name Nancy.
Back then middle names were not used as per the church.

Her maiden name was also spelled Stodghill, Sturgeon and variations etc.

We do not know who she was named after.

Baptized 11/1/1849 Piney Creek Baptist Meeting house.

She married Solomon Parsons ca 1796.

They lived on and are buried on their property.
It became the Billings property when Horatio Billings bought it.
His family is buried there, too.

This cemetery may be called the Solomon Parsons cemetery, too.

      Children
      1. Solomon Jr.
      b. 1800, found on the estate papers.
Was already deceased with a daughter Anna in Indiana.
We are looking for this family.
He may not be Lydia's child.
He may be the product of an unknown first wife.
He is named for his father.

      2. John aka Esquire John or Sq John
      b. 1/19/1805.
He and his family are NOT buried here with his parents.
He is buried with his family about 1 mile away on Cindy Lane in a destroyed cemetery.
His grave stone (and his family's) is located 2 miles away at Mt Carmel.
It is a memorial stone only.
      No bones are there.
He married 1 Margaret Gambill 2 Phebe Laxton.
He is named for, we think, a brother of his dad Solomon.

      3 Robert
      m. 1 Elizabeth Wells 2 Annalise aka Anna Blanton.
He is named for a brother of dad Solomon and the grandfather of Solomon.
He moved to Lee/Wise Cty Va.
On Blanton papers Annalise is shown as such.
On census records she is Anna.
Thanks to descendant Emily for the info.

4 Marion we believe died as an infant.
We think he was a boy.
He may be named for famous SC Rev war hero Francis Marion because Marion is not a traditional name in the Parsons family.
His father may have come from or fought in the SC area.

      5 Caleb
      m. Katherine Landreth.
They lived on the home place.
We do not know who he was named after.

      6 William B.
      m. Lucinda.
We think he is named after his grandfather.

      7 David
      m. Derilda E. Privette.
He may be named after the brother of Lydia.

      8 Joseph
      m. Mary S Draughn.
We do not know who he is named for.

      9 Rebecca
      m. Alvin Dickson/Dixon.
She is named for her mom Lydia's mother.
Her husband has a namesake for an unknown reason in her brother Alvin Dixon Parsons.

      10 Nancy
      m. Andrew Osborne.
We do not know who she is named for.

      11 Mary
      m. 1 Josiah Halsey 2 James Wesley Kegley.
      Josiah died young.
James left the area and disappeared.

      12 Alexander D.
      m. TBA

      13 Alvin Dixon Parsons
      m. Phoebe Tolliver.
We do not know who he was named for but he shares a name with his brother in law.

      14 James
      m. Mary Landreth.
He may be named for Solomon's brother or Lydia's brother.

      15 Craig/Cragg S.
      m. Alpha Williams.
He is named after Mary Cragg/Craig Parsons' family.
She was his grandmother on Solomon's side.

      The Sturgill book lists children:
      1. Solomon Colombus Parsons
      b 1836.
      This is wrong.
      He is a grandson.
He is the child of John above and 1 Margaret Gambill.
He is named for his grandpa Solomon.
      He was visiting.

      CENSUS 1860
      widow.

      PICTURE
We have a daguerreotype copy of her done just before she died 1861.
Her son Sq. John always kept it in his house next to his similar picture.
Then, his daughter Phebe Parsons Ward kept it in her house. Now, it hangs in Phebe's granddaughter's home.

LYDIA STURGILL and her husband Solomon Parsons made their home on a farm on New River at Grassy Creek.
In 1813 they bought a farm from her grandpa John Hash located on Potato Creek in Alleghany County.
They lived out their lives here and are buried in a family cemetery on this farm.
