NOTES
John Sturgill was born about 1779 in Wythe (became Grayson in 1793) Co., Virginia.
Census records do not exist for Virginia for 1790, but John married Jemima Wells about 1799, either in Virginia or North Carolina, and they had 11 children.
John moved from Virginia to North Carolina about 1799, and he is listed as head of household on the 1800 census of Morgan, Ashe, North Carolina.
His parents and several siblings joined him there in 1801.
His father died in January 1807, and John is listed as head of household on the 1810 census of Ashe Co., North Carolina.
John & his brother James moved with their families to Virginia, and they are listed together on the 1820 census 0f Scott (became Wise in 1856) Co., Virginia, both with the last name spelled Sturgeon.
John Sturgeon is still listed in Scott Co., Virginia in 1830, but his brother James is listed in Ashe Co., North Carolina.
John moved with his family from Virginia to Kentucky, and they are listed on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of Harlan Co., Kentucky.
Jemima Wells Sturgill died on March 15, 1856 in Letcher Co., Kentucky, and John was married second to Jane Abbott about 1857.
At the time of this marriage John was age 78 & Jane was age 21.
John & Jane are listed on the 1860 census of District, Letcher Co., Kentucky, with a 6 year old daughter named Arminda in the household that is probably Jane's from a previous relationship since she was born 2 years before Jemima's death.
John & Jane had at least 2 more children.
At some time between 1862-1865 the family returned from Kentucky to Virginia.
John Sturgill died on March 15, 1865 in Wise Co., Virginia. not sure if Jane died also, but children Lydia and John are living with John's son Francis on the 1870 of Gladeville, Wise Co., Virginia, and the 1880 census of Richmond, Wise Co., Virginia.
On the 1880 census they are listed as being Francis' half-sister and half-brother.
Several generations of The Sturgill and Parsons Family intermarried and traveled to Wise and Ky at different times
Children of John Sturgill & Jemima Wells were:
John (1799),
David (1800),
Abigail (1801),
Mary Ann (1803),
Solomon D. (1804), FaG 50719301
In David Sturgill's Sturgill Book page 52/54, Solomon D shows as son of Francis Jr.
It appears that this is wrong.
Solomon D appears to be son of Francis Jr's brother John
Francis (1808),
Andrew Jackson (1810),
Sarah "Sally" (1812),
Rachel (1816),
Nancy (1819),
Elizabeth (1823)
Agnes (1828) Sturgill.
Children of John Sturgill & Jane Abbott were:
Lydia (1859)
John (1862) Sturgill.
NOTES
From the DA Sturgill book:
There were 3 Johns at the same time period. Be careful.
John and wife probably settled first on his father's land on the New river.
In 1804, he bought a farm at the forks of the New river and then sold part of it to brother James.
In 1806, he bought a farm of 156a in Grayson Cty Va. which was next to his dad, Francis Sr. John seems not to have lived here.
He sold the farm to Moses Halsey on 1812.
In 1811, he sold his Alleghy (Ashe Cty then)farm to his bro in laws William Weaver and Solomon Parsons.
In 1812, he moved west.
He settled first in Letcher Cty. Ky (then Harlen) near the Cumberland river on Mart Collier's place.
He swapped this land to Charlie Blair for land at Big Stone Mts near Big Stone Gap where he died and was buried, later.
In 1816, he bought land in Wise Cty. Va where Appalachia now stands from Uncle James Sturgill who bought it in 1812.
John moved to Wise Cty.
Between 1830/40 John moved back to Letcher Cty.
and stayed til Jemima died in 1856.
He remarried and moved to Wise Cty. where he died and is buried.
He died ca 1865 and is buried in the Robinett cemetery in Crackers Neck.
The grave not marked.
John's great grandson Moses Sturgill related many of these details.

NOTES
JOHN STURGILL and his wife Jemima Wells made their first home in Ashe Co., NC near the forks of New River on land which his grandfather James then claimed.
After the death of his grandfather in 1803, John sold his claim to his brother James in 1804.
In 1806 John bought a tract of 156a in Grayson Co. VA which adjoined his father's land in Ashe Co., NC.
This 156a was sold to Moses Halsey in 1812 at which time John is believed to have moved to Letcher Co, KY where he settled on the head of the Cumberland river.
In 1816 he bought a farm in Lee (Wise) Co., VA from his brother James who had purchased the land in 1812 so it appears that the two brothers went there together in 1812. John later moved to Harlan Co., KY, then back to Wise Co, VA, then to Letcher Co, KY where Jemima died and was buried in 1856.
John returned to Wise Co. VA during the civil war and settled in a small valley called "crackers neck".
His descendants say that he died there soon after and was buried in the Robinett cemetery - no marker stone was found.
There is some question as to whether or not John married a second time after the death of Jemima, no marriage record was found.
In the 1860 census of Letcher Co., KY John was living with a young woman named Jane who had a child age six named Araminda.
Some of John's descendants say that Jane was also a Sturgill and John had hired her to help take care of Jemima in her last illness and that after the death of Jemima she continued to live with John as she had no place else to go.
It is the opinion of the writer (DAS) that this story is essentially true
