Notes - This memorial originally reflected Mary Romal as the wife of Joseph Phipps (1730 - 1769). The current manager and author of the Bio of this memorial has removed Mary Romal's name from this memorial because there are no documents to support the fact that Mary Romal was the name of Joseph Phipps' wife. The origin of the Mary Romal tradition is unknown to the present author. However, the Phipps genealogy compiled and published by John C Mullins in 1982 and entitled "The Phipps Family of N.C. and VA" (pp. 3-4) gives us a glimpse of this tradition, possibly even its origin. Mullins says that in 1919, at age 74, Roberts Sanders Phipps of Guilford County, NC mistakenly identified Mary Romal as his "grate grate grandmother" (p. 3) when in fact she was his grandmother, the wife of Samuel Phipps, 1788-1867 (pp. 4 & 346). Mary Romal married Samuel Phipps on 21 Apr 1814 in Guilford County, NC. Mullins gives the following data for Mary Romal: Mary "Polly" Romal b. 23 Dec 1797. d. 14 Sep 1883." Both Samuel and Mary are buried in the Alamance Church Cemetery, Guilford Co., NC (p. 346). Here is a link to the Mary Romal Phipps memorial: Mary "Polly" Romal Phipps
