    • note on Find a Grave:
James Halsey is the son of William Halsey, JR., and Rachel Cobb. The 1850, 60 & 70 Censuses say James was born in Virginia. However, at the time of his birth his parents appear to have lived just across the border in what would become Allegheny, NC and which was still a part of Wilkes County at the time of his birth (see note below).* The Death Certificate of William Cecil, son of James verifies that James was born at Piney Creek, Alleghany County, NC. The various Federal Censuses were used to estimate the birth date of James: 1850 Census- age 57 (b. Abt. 1793); 1860 Census- age 65 (b. Abt. 1795); 1870 Census-age 76 (b. Abt. 1794).

James Halsey married Patsy Peak around 1814 in Mouth of Wilson, Grayson County, Virginia according to "Halsey Genealogy" by David Halsey. The children from this union were as follows (based on "Halsey Genealogy" by Rufus Clinton Halsey):

      1. Ahart Halsey 1814 – 1887 (m. Elizabeth Cox): His headstone says he was killed by lightening.
      2. *Matilda "Millie" Halsey 1817 – 1913 (m. Samuel Cox).
      3. *Malinda Halsey b. 1817(m. Daniel Daugherty in 1856.
      4. Loucinda Halsey 1822 – 1887 (m. Dr William B. Parsons in 1846).
      5. Morris "Marsh" Halsey 1825 – 1909 (m. Sophina Hash ca. 1847).
      6. Olive Malinda Halsey 1827 – 1909 (m. Enoch Hash Sep 30, 1852).
      7. Troy Halsey 1830 – 1857 (m. Polly Jane Hash ca. 1849).
      8. Mary Polly Halsey 1832 – 1907 (m. Lazarus Hash in 1848).
      9. William Cecil "Cease" Halsey 1839 – 1932 (m. Rebecca A. Hash).
      10. Adah Ann Halsey 1839 – 1939.
      11. Henry Halsey 1840 – 1923 (m. Mrs. Nancy Jane Stanford Miles, widow of William Jesse Miles).

*Malinda and Matilda are said to have been twins.

Based on the following evidence it appears that James and his wife Martha "Pattie" "Patsy" Halsey are buried in the William C. Halsey Cemetery:

      1. The earliest verifiable burial was of J. N. Rutherford in 1877 , and who died about 6 years after James Halsey. Grimsley Halsey, the grandson of James and Patsy Halsey and son of Morris & Sophina Halsey, is the earliest verifiable Halsey who was buried there on 30 Jan 1892.

      2. James' & Patsy's son, Morris Halsey, was buried in the cemetery in 1909, per "Halsey Genealogy," by Rufus Clinton Halsey. The original creator of this memorial has been told by his cousin 1x removed, Tommy Halsey, a living direct descendant of Morris Halsey who is his 1st great-grandfather, that Morris Halsey and his wife Sophina are indeed in the William C. Halsey Cemetery. Tommy has been to the cemetery several times during his life in his younger years, and he recalls seeing the fieldstone markers of Morris & Sophine Halsey. The author neglected to ask him who initially showed him the fieldstone markers.

      3. Another son of James & Patsy Halsey, William Cecil "Cease" Halsey (after whom the cemetery is known today), was buried here in 1932 as well as his wife Rebecca in 1929 and some of their children (per New River Notes).

      4. A year before James died in 1871, the 1870 census listed James as living next door to his son William Cecil. At this point in time Cecil declares he has no value in any real estate and has nothing of value in personal estate, while his father James has a real estate value of $800.00 and a personal estate value of what appears to be $909.00.

      5. Rufus Clinton Halsey says James & his wife lived in "Mouth of Wilson, VA, 'Fox Knob.'" The William Cease Halsey Cemetery is the only known cemetery in the immediate Fox Knob area in which they lived.

      6. Since James & Pasty lived by their son, William Cecil, it would be natural for them to be buried in what would later be known as the William Cease Halsey family cemetery. Although it needs yet to be verified, the author believes it was upon the land of James & Patsy that the cemetery was founded.

*In 1799 the northern and western parts of Wilkes County became Ashe County. In 1859 the eastern part of the remainder of Ashe County became Alleghany County (wikipedia).
