      David's father, Joseph D. Back, was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Joseph Back was captured in January 1864 and put in the POW camp at Camp Chase, Ohio where he died on 21 December 1864. David's mother, Rebecca died in October 1864.

      The orphaned David was raised by his paternal grandparents, Alfred Back and Isabell (Caudill) Back in Menifee County, Kentucky.
