NOTES FOR MATILDA FROM PHIPPS WEBSITE
The following record refers to the estate of Asa and Rebecca Weaver of Ashe County, North Carolina.
Mary S. Phipps was appointed an administrator, and a bond was filed with security given by Fielden Phipps and R.B. Phipps.
Asa Weaver is said to have lived from 1823 to 1892.
Fielden Phipps (1848-1918)
was a son of Greenberry Phipps (1815-1889) of Ashe County, who married Matilda Weaver (apparently 1817-about 1864).
Fielden married another Weaver, that being Mary Selena Weaver (1854-1937).
From Ashe County, North Carolina Executor Record Book, 1869-1919, p. 64:
North Carolina
Ashe County
In Superior Court
Oct. 4th 1897
On Motion and it being shown to the Satisfaction of the Court that Asa Weaver and Rebecca A Weaver late of Ashe County is dead and not having left any last Will and Testament and upon application and it being further Shown to the Court that Mary. S. Phipps and J. M. Sawyers are proper persons to administer on Said Estate.
It is therefore ordered and adjudged by the Court that Mary. S. Phipps and J. M. Sawyers be and that they are hereby appointed Administrators of the aforesaid Estate they having come into Court and Filed their Bond with Fielden Phipps and R. B. Phipps as Security and qualified as the law directs
P. Blevins, C.S.C.
Unconfirmed secondary sources identify Asa Weaver as a son of Edward Weaver (1791-1868) who married Tamzon Ballou, known as Tamsy.
Asa is said to have been a brother of the Matilda Weaver who married Greenberry Phipps.
One especially interesting source is the Owen Meredith Ballou webpage.
An amnesty letter by Asa Weaver of Ashe County to President Andrew Johnson is housed in the Berea College collection.
