Notes - William Waldon O'Dell, born May 23, 1915, in Livingston, KY. He attended Harlan High School, Harlan KY where he was an outstanding member and captain of the football team excelling at the positions of linebacker and fullback. He was also an outstanding member of the Glee Club and enjoyed singing throughout his life. His goal of attending Bowling Green University to major in marketing was short lived when took a job to help his mother and father with family expenses. He entered the US Army in March 1943, rose to the rank of sergeant and during World War II participated in 3 island invasions in the Philippines. Among his many metals are 3 bronze campaign stars. He was a member of the 465th Glider Field Artillery which was dissolved due to the large amount of casualties they received. He was a true American and very proud of his family. His family had the distinction of having 5 brothers serving their country during World War II involved in more than 25 battles including Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal and Bougainville. He was a member of the Italian American War Veterans. He was married to Pauline Adams until her death on May 23, 2001. He is survived by his brother Carl Douglas (Pete) O'Dell, Nashville, TN; son William W. (Tripp) O'Dell, III,; daughter Karen E. O'Dell-Howard; four granddaughters and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 12:00 PM in the chapel of Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home. Friends may visit on Saturday from 10-12.
