- Col. Wayne Hughes, USAF, Ret., was born on August 1, 1935, and passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2021, at his home in Pensacola, Florida.
Wayne was married to Mariece Bowling, the love of his life, at the age of twenty-two and they were married for 63 years. They were blessed with two sons, Harold Wayne of Houston, Texas, and Bryon Keith and wife, Tamara, of Langley, Kentucky. They were also blessed with two grandchildren, Harold Wayne Hughes, Jr. and Dr. Elizabeth Hughes Hayes and husband, Vincent. Wayne is also survived by one brother, Larry Hughes and wife, Pearl Jean, of London, Kentucky.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Lytal and Rachel Murray Hughes. He was a 1953 graduate of Lily (Kentucky) High School.
Being a Patriot, Wayne joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating from the University of Kentucky. He remained an avid supporter of the University, especially the basketball team. He spent 24 years in the Air Force retiring with the rank of Colonel. He and his family traveled throughout the world during his tenure of service.
Wayne and Mariece were active members of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida. They were active in many of the events connected with their church such as meeting the needs of their Sunday School class by serving as Care Group leaders and they also enjoyed playing games with their friends on Game Day at church.
When we think of Col. Wayne Hughes three words come to our minds…..Faith…..Family…..and Country. He will be truly missed by many of us, but, we know we will see him again when we enter Heaven.
A memorial service honoring the life of Col. Wayne Hughes was held on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida.
