All memory of the cradle had faded among the Bierlys when in 1941, about a hundred years after it had been built, one of David's great-granddaughters was asked if her family would like the cradle back. Daniel acquired a fair educa- tion in the common schools and the Academy of Freeburg. He had entered the profession of teaching in 1860, taking charge of a school in his native village, but ill health obliged him to relinquish his work in the school-room, and he then directed his attention to other pursuits. He was An active politician, and for a number of years served as a member of the Republican Township Committee, one year 3s Chairman of the County Committee, and in 1872 repre- sented Snyder County on the State Central Committee. He devoted his latter years, in connection with other pursuits, to the teaching of music. His connection with the publication ?of The Freeburg Courier is mentioned in another place, and need not be repeated here. He served as Postmaster of Freeburg from May 6, 1869, until his decease. | 382 | Dr. John T. Auten Lewisburg – A funeral for Dr. John Thompson Auten, 88, College Park, who died Monday in his home will be conducted Friday morning in Rutherford Funeral Home, Columbus, Ohio. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio. A native of Illinois, he was born in White Hall on Nov. 6, 1887, a son of the late William A. and Martha Ann Thompson Auten. His first wife, the former Dorothy Doan Davis, who died in 1973. In 1974, he married the former Josephine Kreider Ziegler, who survives. Dr. Auten received his BS degree from the University of Illinois in 1916. In 1923, he received his MS and in 1929 his Ph.D. from Iowa State College. He was a professor of soils chemistry at Mont Alto State Forest School from 1923-1929 and a silviculturist at Central States Experimental Station, U.S. Forest Service, Columbus, Ohio from 1929-1951. From 1951-1967 he was a consultant in forest soils for the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. and in 1973 Dr. Auten received an award by the Ohio Chapter of the Society of American Foresters for outstanding contributions to the chapter and to the society. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Kratzer Dull Post 182, American Legion, Lewisburg; Alpha Zeta Sigma Chi and Phi Lamba Epsilon honorary fraternity. He was active in amateur radio, painting, wood working, and marquetry. Surviving in addition to his widow, is a son, Dr. John H. Auten, of Alexandria, Va. and three grandchildren. Henry (Henry, Christopher, Gr. Meyer) owned the old homestead near Boalsburg, a farm of great fertility. He was a man of intelligence and was prominent in his section ; a lover of music and a fine singer. He was a con- sistent member of the German Reformed Church, to which denomination his parents and all his brothers and sisters belonged I believe. On account of his large stature he was familiarly know as "big Henry Meyer." Henry was born Sept. 30, 1810; died of paralysis Oct. 5, 1888. He had been suffering for about a year. | 384 | Edwin A. Ziegler, 87, Lewisburg, Civic Leader, Retired Educator Edwin A. Ziegler, 87, of College Park, Lewisburg, died Saturday evening at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. A graduate of Rebersburg High School and Academy, he received a bachelor of science degree from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, in 1902 and received a master of science degree from E and M in 1913. He also attended Columbia University, New York City. He served as principal of Rebersburg High School in 1902 and 1903 and served with the U.S. Forest Service from 1903 to 1909. He was a professor at the Pennsylvania State Forest School in 1909-10 and served as director of the school from 1910-1929. Mr. Zielgler was born in Rebersburg, Centre County, on Sept. 20, 1880, the son of the late Thomas R. and Lydia A. Yearick Ziegler. In 1929-31 he served as senior forest economist, Southern Forest Experiment Station, New Orleans. From 1932-38, he was senior research forester, Pennsylvania Department of Forest and Waters. From 1937 to 1951, he was a professor of forest economics and managements, School of Forestry, University of Florida at Gainesville. From 1938-52, he was a consulting forester for Georgia Forest Products Company. In 1944-45, he served on the War Production Board, Washing, D.C. He served in the Army during World War I. His memberships included Society of American Foresters; American Association for the Advancement of Science; past president, Pennsylvania Academy of Science; listed in “who was Who in America” and “Leaders In American Science;” Kratzer-Cull American Legion Post 182, Lewisburg; past president of the Lewisburg Rotary Club, and member of the United Church of Christ, Lewisburg. Since his retirement he had served as camp chairman, Girl Scout camp at Ioka; president of the Lewisburg Welfare Federation and was active in the establishment of the Lewisburg community swimming pool. He was also active in the Red Cross. He was married to the former Josephine Kreider to Toledo, Ohio, in 1935, who survives. His first wife, the former Rebecca J. Moyer of Rebersburg, preceded him in death. Also surviving are three children, Mrs. Charles R. Zweizig of New Cumberland; Mrs. Alan C. Page of Monson, Mass; and Miriam M. Ziegler, a graduate student at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. A nephew and two nieces also survive as do three grandchildren. Private services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Raymond C. Erdley funeral home, Lewisburg, with Rev. Paul C. Jordan, his pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Rebersburg Cemetery. | 388 | Elinor Hopple Elinor June Ross Hopple, 77, of Lebanon, died of natural causes Friday, May 18, 2001, in Lebanon. She was the wife of the late Warren S. Hopple. Born July 31, 1923, in Hebron, she was the daughter of Lee and Viola Stine Ross. After her marriage in November 1942, Elinor worked in a sewing factory while her husband served as a pilot in World War II. She was a lifelong member of the Avon Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving are son Donald W., husband of Lynn Dickson Hopple, of Cleona; daughter Audrey, wife of Scott Yingst, of Lebanon; sisters Mae Ulrich of Palmyra and Thelma Goshert of Lebanon; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter Bonita Hopple, who died in February 1965, and son Jeffery Hopple, who died in march 2000. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Christman’s Funeral Home, 226 Cumberland St., Lebanon. | 393 | Elizabeth Brittain married Peter White (1768-1819) Peter White ... settled in Columbia county previous to the year 1800, first in the vicinity of Orangeville, whence he moved about 1806 to Scott township, in the neighborhood of Light Street. He was a farmer, and bought the farm on the edge of that village in recent years owned by the Hartmans. He passed the rest of his life there, he and his wife both dying on that place, and they are buried at Light Street. His death occurred when he was comparatively a young man, and his widow, Elizabeth (Brittain), survived some twenty years.
