    Charles F. McGee, 94, of Catlin, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, while in the Palliative Care Unit at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville.
    He was born April 10, 1919 in Batestown, the son of Charles E. and Nellie Byerly McGee. He married Mary Hawkins on Feb. 17, 1943 in Hernando, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marjorie Jones and one brother, Robert McGee.
    Surviving are his three children, C. Michael (Linda) McGee, David A. (Kathryn) McGee and Jeanie (Scott) Church; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, JoAnn Fetters; three nieces, Luanne Kees, Janice Hawkins and Jackie Land; three nephews, Curt McGee, Bobby McGee and Steve Hadley and special friend, Glenda Eaton.
    He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded at Guadalcanal. After serving his country, he returned home to Catlin where he farmed for over 40 years. He was the first recipient of the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in Vermilion County.
