Iris Jean Engell, 89, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in Fairfield, Calif.
Iris was born to Thomas and Mabel Eakins in Hammon, Okla., the middle child of nine brothers and sisters. She was a longtime resident of Fairfield, Calif.
As a young girl fresh out of high school, Iris began her career during World War II as an FAA radio operator at Tinker Air Field in Oklahoma. During a trip to California, she met the love of her life, married and settled in as a homemaker until the death of her husband in 1960. Taking this life change in her stride, she began her career at Intercommunity Hospital (now NorthBay Medical Center) in Fairfield, Calif., as the business office manager. Upon her retirement in 1984, Iris enjoyed gardening, bird watching, writing, discussing politics, the Oakland Athletics, musicals and spending time with her family, especially her grandson.
Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Alan.
Survivors include her daughter, Lynn (Marvin) McCormick; grandson, Michael McCormick; sisters, Fran Sutherlin and Ramona Eakins; brother, James Eakins. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law, Arlene Reynolds, and brother-in-law, Gary Engell; and many nieces and nephews.
Aged 89 years.
