- Obituary : Lauretta Baatz Borgman : 1917 - 2012
Mrs. Lauretta (Works) Baatz Borgman, age 94, of Bennington, Indiana, Lauretta entered this life on September 18, 1917, on a farm near Allensville, Indiana, the daughter of Roy D. Works & Ethel May (Hastings) Works Scudder, both of whom preceded her in death.
When she was just 6 months old, her parents decided to move to a farm on Allensville Road. Lauretta lived all of her life on the family farm, except for the two winter trips to Colorado.
Lauretta's father passed away suddenly when she was 11 years old. She & her mother were left alone to run the family farm. She always joked that she knew how to drive a tractor, when most women could not.
Lauretta continued on with her schooling & about the seventh grade she became interested in writing & reciting poems. From then on, she was constantly writing her thoughts down.
On April 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Ralph T. Baatz just before her graduation from Vevay High School. They settled down on the family farm & started their happy life together.
Ralph was called to service during World War II & just before he left for service, around Christmas time, he bought Lauretta a portable typewriter as a special gift. Again she was left to maintain the farm by herself. She was able to trade off work with other farmers, plowing & disking & whatever it took to run the family farm.
Three years later her husband returned from the South Pacific to a wife who could run a farm & was a newspaper correspondent. She began writing for the Vevay Newspapers in 1945, a job she took very seriously. She continued writing the Allensville News, while her husband continued the farming operation.
On May 7, 1954, Lauretta suffered another tragic loss, when her husband of 19 years died suddenly, but Lauretta's faith in God helped her through this very sad period of her life.
In 1955, Lauretta began preparing taxes & continued to prepare taxes for the community for over 50 years.
In 1954, she received her Insurance License & began selling Crop Insurance to farmers in the community.
On February 14, 1957, she found happiness again & was united in marriage to Clyde L. Borgman & they enjoyed over 39 years of marriage together until his death on February 29, 1996.
In 1968, Lauretta's collection of poems was published in a book titled "Hoosier Breezes." This was truly an inspiration to her & anyone who chose to read them.
Lauretta was a very talented pianist & she wrote & composed song's titled, "A Soldier's Prayer", "A Risen Savior" & "I'm In Love With You", to name a few. Lauretta was a member & the pianist for the Allensville United Methodist Church for over 60 years.
She was a member of the Bennington Order of Easter Star Chapter #407 & the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Aurora, IN.
She also wrote numerous obituaries for family, friends & neighbors over the years to be read during funeral services.
She also sold greeting cards & Vitamins throughout the community.
For over 60 years, Lauretta has continued as the Allensville News Correspondent, gathering her news on Monday mornings to make the deadline for the weekly newspaper.
Lauretta served on the Board & as the Switzerland County Chairman for the American Cancer Society.
She served as the caretaker of the Salem Cemetery on Tapps Ridge, for over 50 years.
She established endowments with the Community Foundation of Switzerland County for scholarships in memory of the Works, Hastings, Baatz & Borgman Families.
Lauretta sponsored a little girl through the Compassion Inc. & Children's International Inc., for over 30 years.
She was an avid supporter of the wildlife, Humane Society, Switzerland County Animal Shelter, Heifer International & Gideon's International.
Lauretta played the piano every Tuesday at the worship service at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for as long as her health permitted her.
Lauretta will be remembered for her love of her cats & dogs & especially her faithful companion that she rescued from the barn, Miss Kitty.
She has given countless hours of time as a volunteer & philanthropist to her community & to her nation. This poem that she had written & that was published in The Cornucopia Poetry Quarterly in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the Spring of 1966, says it best. I write about the birds that sing, And the flowers beneath the snow. And I write about my neighbors, The folks I really know.
Lauretta died at 5:22 pm Saturday March 17, 2012, at the Ridgewood Health Campus in Lawrenceburg, IN.
Lauretta will be lovingly remembered by her niece & caregiver: Ramona Baatz Miller of Bennington, IN; several nieces, nephews & cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father: Roy D. Works; her mother: Ethel May (Hastings) Works Scudder; her first husband: Ralph T. Baatz; her second husband: Clyde L. Borgman; her brother: Vernon Leroy Works.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 22, 2012, at 11:00 AM, by Pastor Roger Parrott & Rev. John Scudder, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery,800 East Main Street Vevay, Indiana
Friends may call 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.
The Bennington Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #407 will conduct services at 7:30 pm Wednesday, at the funeral home
Memorial contributions may be made to Dearborn County Hospice, Gideons or to the Community Foundation of Switzerland County. Cards are available at the funeral home.
