  • Notes
    • 2A. Issue of William Shuamte (I) and Ann (McCormick), His Wife.
      1. Stephen Spencer Shumate (I). He was born on 26 November 1753 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, and died in 1819 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He married Clara Heathman (?_ probably about 1793 in either Virginia or Kentucky. He served under Captain Valentine Peyton in the 2nd Company, 3rd Virginia Regiment in Revolutionary War. In the late 1780s, he migrated to Kentucky and settled in Bourbon County. Evidently, he made a visit to Fauquier county, Virginia, in 1797, because his name appears in the Personal Property Tax List of that county in that year. His name appears in the 1800 (tax list) and 1810 Federal Censuses of Bourbon County, Kentucky. And, his name appears in the1820 Federal Census of Harrison County, Kentucky. An extract of the November Court, 1820, as taken from Will Book F, page 327, reads, “Cash received from the War Department as a pension for the Support of herself and the Children of Her Deceased Husband $190.00” (See page 1-49), appendix H). Since his wife Clara supposedly died on 11 November 1819 which was about six months following his death, the appearance of his name in the 1820 census is rather confusing.
The entry in the 1820 census shows he was 45 years of age or over which would have been correct if he were alive. However, his son Stephen Spence Shumate (II) was approximately 26 years of age in that year. Could the census taker have confused Stephen Spencer (II) with his father Stephen Spence (1)? Also, Stephen Spencer (()’s name appears in the Personal Property Tax List of Bourbon County for the year 1803, and his name and that of Stephen Spencer (II) appear in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Harrison County from 1812 through 1829. Stephen (I) and family are believed to have moved from Bourbon into Harrison County sometime during 1811-1812. Jared Keith, an in-law (?), was the Administrator of the Estate of Stephen Spence Shumate (I), and a copy of his Settlement of the Estate appears on page H-50, Appendix H. No entries for members of this family appear in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Harrison County after 1830. In all likelihood, Stephen Spence (I) and Clara Shumate’s children moved to another county or out of state shortly thereafter. The writer has no further information about them.
The identification and listing of the issue of Stephen Spencer (I) and his wife Clara (Heathman) Shumate remain somewhat speculative, because insufficient documentary evidence has been found to confirm whether each and every one of the individuals lists below were really their children and thereby members of the Fifth Generation.
