A. J. "Bill" Soper, 67, of Tilton, Ill., formerly of Delphi, died at 9:07 p.m. March 15, 1988, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Danville. Born Jan. 30, 1921, in Jackson, Mich., he was the son of Winfred and Hazel Wild Soper.
His marriage was in 1949 in Springport, Mich., to Leona Humphrey, who died April 5, 1983. He then married Thelma Hazelbaker Shotts Sept. 30, 1984, in Danville. She survives.
He was foreman at the Delphi Journal from 1953-1963 and also was involved in Delphi Little League.
He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Kiwanis Club, Navy Club, Fleet Reserve Association, Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the American Legion.
He was a member of the Board of the Habitat for Humanity and was affiliated with many volunteer organizations.
He was a retired chief petty officer serving in the U.S Navy during World War II. He worked at the VA Medical Center, retiring in 1983.
Surviving with the wife are two sons, Boyd S. Modjeski of Hudson, Fla., and Thomas E. Soper of Delphi; four daughters, Judith Shaffer, Denver, Colo.; patricia Brinkman, Monticello; Dorothy Whiteman, Delphi; and Jeri Shull, Crawfordsville; 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two stepsons; two stepdaughters; four step-grandchildren; and two sisters.
Services and burial were Friday in Illinois.
