- Old Resident Gone.
The death of Mrs. Sarah Springgate, relict of the late Judge W. P. Springgate, which occurred at the Commercial Hotel in Washington on May 27, 1913, at 10:40 p.m., removes the lst of six children who were sons and daughters of Joseph and Rebecca Sullins, who were pioneers of St. Louis county, where the deceased was born, near Creve Coeur Lake, on September 15, 1832. She was married to W.P. Springgate at the home of her birth in 1856, and they shortly thereafter became citizens of this county, being among the earliest settlers of New Haven, then known as Miller's Landing. They had six children, four of whom are now living. These are William, of Seattle, Washington; Ferd and Jennie, of Washington, Mo., and S.P., of New Haven. James and Edgar, who were twins died in infancy.
No woman who ever lived in this community was more universally respected and esteemed than Mrs. Springgate. Her husband was likewise regarded for his rugged honesty and many estimable qualities of mind and heart. These traits were imparted to their children and they had the comforting experience of seeing them became prominent and respected citizens in the communities in which they live.
The funeral was held here last Friday and was largely attended. Of those present from a distance were observed Mark Springgate and wife, William Springgate and wife, Fred Springgate and wife, Henry Smith and wife, Mrs. B. Scammell, Mrs. Emma Jeffrey, Mrs. John Halloran and Tessie Thermon, of St. Louis; Mrs. R.G. Purves, W.W. Sutton, of Jefferson City; Mrs. T. Miles, of Gray Summit; E. Zumqalt, Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. A. Armstrong, Mrs. Geo. Pike, Mrs. H.A. May, and Miss Jennie Springgate, of Washington.
