- F3. Lydia Shumate. The writer estimates she was born circa
17 63 or possibly earlier. There is some question as to whether
she was the daughter of Daniel [I]'s first wife Elizabeth (Taliaferro) or his second wife Mary Elizabeth (Hoffman). Unfortunately, there is no known evidence other than her marriage to Joseph George on 11 June 1786 in Fauquier County, Virginia, and his being named in the Bond of 14 January 1802 (See copy, page C-66, Appendix C) to document her family relationship. Other than the fact she and her husband were living at the time the of bond was recorded in 1802, the writer does not know the dates their deaths. On page 199 of his book, T.F. von Stauffenberg wrote the following information about her.
[T]here is very l i t t l e doubt about Lydia's parentage.' Born about 1771-1772 [Writer's Comment: She must have been at least ten years older.], she was of exactly marriageable age in 1786, when she married JOSEPH GEORGE, of the wealthy and prominent family whose lands had bordered closely upon the Shumatess' since the 1720's.
Joseph George was the son of Nicholas George (who died between July and September 177 9) by Margaret (Whitson) George, who were married on 25 December 1740. Joseph was one of the younger children of this marriage, and received only livestock in his father's will, although later he appears as a taxpayer
He was born after 1758, hence was only a little older than his wife.
Almost immediately after their marriage, Joseph and Lydia settled down on a part of the Old Shumate acreage, her
marriage portion, sandwiched between the main Daniel Shumate
property and the George holdings. In 1786, after the August Court which finally ruled on the probate of Daniel's Will, Joseph was associated with his brother-in-law, Thomas Shumate, in managing the affairs of Daniel's third wife, Tabitha, and her minor children. . [Writer's Comment: The reader is reminded of the writer's arguments regarding Tabitha (Dodson) presented previously in this chapter.
Thus far, we have not located the dates of death for either Joseph or Lydia, nor the names of their children.
