    Orsmus Vandorn Gritton and his wife, Mary Josephine Underwood, abandoned their three boys when the couple separated. At the time the youngest, Joseph Vandorn Gritton, was age five. The boys grew up in Brightside Orphanage in Plymouth, Indiana. The orphanage put them out one by one as they reached the age of sixteen. Their mother kept their sister, Millie.


    Mrs. Josephine Gritton has filed a petition in the superior court asking a divorce from Orsmus Gritton. They were married June 22, 1903, and separated March 24, 1920. She alleges cruel and inhuman treatment and failure to provide. They have three children and she asks their custody. Russell K. Bedgood and L.J. Ledman are attorneys for the plaintiff.

    Mrs. Mary Josephine Pettyjohn, 74, formerly of 505 New York street, died in the hospital at the State Soldiers home at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. She had been in failing health three years and hospitalized three weeks. She had lived at the Soldiers home four years.

    Born in Penfield, Ill., she was married to Leoads Pettyjohn who died in 1953.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Millie Breese, Lafayette; two sons, Edward H. Gritton, East Chicago, and Joseph B. Gritton, Schererville; four brothers, Ben Underwood, Three Rivers, Mich., William Underwood, Kalamazoo, Mich., Charles Underwood, Lafayette, and Edward Underwood, Elmdale, and a sister, Mrs. Clyde Green, Attica.

    Born in Danville, Ill., she lived most of her life in Lafayette. She was married in 1945 to Lawrence Breese, who survives.
    Surviving with the husband are the father, ormus Gritton of Danville, Ill., and two brothers, Edward Gritton of Sullivan and Doran Gritton of Schererville.

    Rites for Walter T. Gritton, 50, of New Elliott, who died Thursday following a long illness, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Johnston-Royce Funeral Home, 242 N. Griffith Blvd, Griffith. The Rev. Leigh Hargrave of the First Christian Church of Griffith will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Linden Cemetery, Linden, Ind., with the Rev. J.C. Williams of the Pilgrim Chapel of Crawfordsville officiating. Friends may call at the Griffith funeral home after 4:30 p.m. today.
    He is survived by the widow, Hazel; mother, Mrs. Josephine Pettyjohn of Lafayette, Ind.; father, O.V. Burial will be in Shaker Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call. He was a retired engineer for the Youngstown Sheet and Steel Company in Hammond.
