Notes - Meanest Woman In Seven Counties
Laban Gritten sired 17 children from his first wife (who we think was Sarah Potter {1835-1877}), 7 children with Elidia, called Lydia or Lydie, and it's not known if he had any children by wife #3 (possibly Ella {1867-1906}).
Elidia was known as the meanest woman in seven counties. She was a small woman with a sharp tongue and extremely bossy. Laban stayed with her until the children were all grown. He packed his bags, gave her the farm, and got a divorce. That was unheard of in those days. Laban moved to a small house in town and married a woman who worked in a tavern, possibly Ella. Other women looked down on her for working. She may have been an orphan or a widow and didn't have a choice in being self-supporting. Usually when that sort of thing happened, they became a cleaning lady, a seamstress, a store clerk, or some other menial task that paid little wages. She was pleasant and Laban enjoyed being with her because he didn't have to tolerate Elidia's eternal nagging. Nettie remembered going to visit her grandmother. Elidia sent one of her sons to town to tell Laban that Romillie was visiting and had brought the children (Ona, Nettie, and Cora). Laban and his wife came in a buggy. The new wife was nicely dressed and she brought a small bag of candy for the children. The children were hanging on the fence, staring at the strange lady Romillie would rushed out, dragged the children away from then fence. The children were disappointed that they didn't get the candy. Romillie and Elidia totally ignored the woman and treated her as if she was a harlot. Nettie remembers thinking that the lady was very nice and she brought candy.
