3386 Notes on Find a Grave:
Henry Franklin Mohn was born October 4, 1803 in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, PA, a small settlement just north of Nazareth, PA. His father, Johannes G. Mohn (1755-1822) - see Memorial #125795153, was a native of Germany: a Hessian soldier who arrived in New York Harbor in the spring of 1776 and was later taken prisoner after the First Battle of Trenton. He was subsequently sent to a prisoner of war camp in Allentown, PA where he helped to make shoes for the Revolutionary soldiers. After the War, Henry's father worked as a shoemaker and farmer, married Catarina Metzger (1774-1813) - see Memorial #154710903), and, together, had five children, including Henry. Henry's siblings were, Elisabeth (1795-1813), Christina (1797-?), John G. Jr. (1800-1857) - see Memorial #46104708 and Peter (1806-1888) - see Memorial #64919992.

It is documented that, as a young man, Henry initially worked as a shoemaker, but he later cultivated a farm of 70 acres near Belfast, PA for about 6 years until 1828. In 1834, he began work as a grinder and stocker (a maker of wooden gunstocks) at the Boulton Gun Works in Jacobsburg, PA (part of Bushkill Township), and he continued both full time and part time there until 1857. Also during this time, he became skilled in the concoction of medicinal herbs and roots, and he traveled extensively, selling and delivering his medications to many patrons throughout the region. Later, he became the proprietor of a hotel in Brodheads, PA, which is located between Bethlehem and Nazareth, PA. He subsequently became proprietor of a different hotel located in Salisbury, Lehigh County, PA for 3 years, and then he retired.

About 1823, Henry married Eliza Fehr, the youngest daughter of John Fehr of Bushkill, Northampton County, PA. They had 11 children, 9 of whom survived infancy, including Sylvester Mohn (born 1824), Henry S. Mohn (born 1826), Charles Mohn (born February, 1828), Stephen Andrew Mohn (born 1831 died 1833), Louisa Mohn (born 1834), John J. Mohn (born 1836), Julia Mohn (born 1839), Eleanora C. Mohn (born 1843), and Helen Mohn (born 1846). Their four sons (Sylvester, Henry S., Charles, and John J.) were all Union Army veterans of the Civil War (2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry, 59th Regiment, Companies H and I). Sylvester Mohn died in 1864 from a shoulder wound caused by shell shrapnel in the battle of Deep Bottom (in Virginia). He was buried in an unmarked grave in Annapolis, MD, but his cenotaph was placed in Belfast Union Cemetery (see his record on find-a-grave, Memorial #16130971). At age 73, Henry Mohn died on March 13, 1876 and was buried in Belfast Union Cemetery. His wife, Eliza, died Sept. 22, 1890 and was buried beside Henry (see her record on find-a-grave, Memorial #72914022).

It should be mentioned that on March 16, 1828, Henry Mohn became one of 16 founding members of Union Church and Cemetery in Bushkill, PA (outside of Belfast, PA) by donating either money and/or an acre of land and by signing a revised church constitution. Henry's donation included a portion of his farm which is, today, the site of St. Luke's UCC Church and Belfast Union Cemetery. For many years, Union Church and Cemetery (as they were known then) collectively served Lutheran, Moravian, and Dutch Reformed congregations. Over time, many local people called Union Church and Cemetery, “Henry's Church and Cemetery,” because members of the Henry family, who operated the nearby Henry Rifle Manufactory in Jacobsburg (also known as the Boulton Gun Works), first proposed and encouraged its establishment. Today, the expanded and rebuilt Union Church and Cemetery, located just outside of Belfast, PA, is now called St. Luke's United Church of Christ and Belfast Union Cemetery.

CHARLES E. ACHENBACH
Despite the advanced age of Grandpa Achenbach, during which he had had no recent illness until last Thursday, Mr. Achenbach died Sunday morning about ten thirty, the ailment being angina.
Mr. Achenbach was a man of the most genial temperament and lively mind, and loved conversation and discussion. He was a friend to all and is sadly missed in the Worthing family, with whom he has made his home for some three years. His frequent walks about town will be missed, with his cherry greetings.
A brief service was held Tuesday morning at the Reeve funeral home and services were held at the Presbyterian church at Litchfield, his old home, where interment was made.
Elder W.C. Rishel of the Christian church at Elmcreek officiated.
Pallbearers were Jim Lang, Court Lang, George Lang, Elmer Slote, Henan Bacus and John Howard.

Charles Edward Achenbach was born November 8, 1850, at Parksville, Michigan, and passed away January 24, 1943, at the age of ninety-two years, two months and sixteen days.
In 1872 he and a friend, Mr. James Slote, came to Nebraska. As government land was being offered newcomers, they took up adjoining homesteads, near the present site of Hastings. Here, for eight years, he endured the rigors of early pioneering, experiencing encounters with Indian tribes, severe blizzards and then again the plague of grasshoppers.
In 1880 he moved to Cedarville, Nebraska, east of the present town of Litchfield.
In 1886 he was united in marriage to Kittie Bullis, at the home of her sister, Mrs. J.T. Campbell, then residing in Cedarville. To this union were born twin sons, Bertram and Bernard. They resided in this community for a number of years, except for a brief time, when he served as county treasurer at Loup City.
After the death of his wife in 1897, he moved to Litchfield where he engaged in the grain business.
In 1900 he was married to Mrs. Anna Coleman, To this union was born one son who died in infancy.
In 1907 they moved to Michigan, returning to Litchfield in 1913, where he continued in the grain business until about 1935.
In May, 1938, his wife Anna passed away. He maintained his home in Litchfield for over a year. He then moved to Elmcreek, making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Floyd Worthing, where he passed away Sunday morning.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his two sons, B.H Achenbach, of Julesburg, Colorado, and B.D. Achenbach, of Grand Island; three step daughters, Mrs. Floyd Worthing, Elmcreek; Mrs. Harry Grove, Placerville, California; and Mrs. C. D. Smith, San Bernardino, California; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He took a great interest in all civic and county affairs, and even though his latter years were spent away from Litchfield, he took a kern interest in the people of that community and always considered it his home.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church, which he joined when a boy. His was a life full of rich experiences. Seeing this country progress from its crude pioneer hardships to the present day of modern conveniences and luxuries. He experienced the progression of modern travel from the lowly oxen to the modern streamliner. He took a keep interest in politics and world affairs, up until the time of his death, and could discuss these topics very fluently with his family and friends.
No greater tribute could be paid to his very fine character than the love and esteem in which he was held by his loved ones, friends and acquaintances.

OBITUARY
After a long and painful illness, Mrs. C.E. Achenbach died Thursday, February 18th, 1897, aged 29 years, 11 mo. and 21 days.
Kitty Bullis was born at Irondale, New York, February 27, 1867. Having been orphaned at an early age she made her home with her married sister, Mrs. J.T Campbell, with whom she moved to Cedarville, Nebraska, in the early days of Sherman county. She was married to Mr. C.E. Achenbach June 2nd, 1886. Having made her home here continuously, the citizens have known her almost since childhood and are now compelled to feel the loss of a true, self-reliant, jovial and kind hearted friend. The family lose a loving wife and mother, known far and wide for her may virtues, and the whole community grieves the departure of an esteemed neighbor and a popular member of society. That feeling was shown by the large attendance at the funeral. The services were held at the Presbyterian church in this village. Saturday at 11 a.m., officiated by Rev. J.A. Stevens, assisted by Rev. C.E Fenton and the remains were laid to rest in the Litchfield Cemetery. A husband and two little boys are bereft.
