6757 LKH note: A possible record might be Jacob Demaree, b.1828, in the 1860 US census in Shelby, Ripley County, Indiana. Wife Frances age 25; Madison age 5; Julia age 3, and Charles age 2. I can't find reliable info on them after that.

Five Pioneers Who Found Indiana’s Climate Conducive To Longevity.
Some Centenarians
Anderson special: Action has been brought by one of Alexander Ferguson’s daughters to have a guardian appointed for him. Ferguson lives in Gilman. He has just passed his one hundred and seventh birthday. The action for the guardian has brought to light the fact that there are five people in this (Madison) county who have passed the hundred-year mark. Ferguson is the dean of the men, and his sister, Mrs. Bettie Carrolton, who lives near Franklin, heads the women with 111 years to her credit. Summitville claims the next distinction, presenting Thomas Wells, age 104. Wells was born in Falmouth, Pendleton county, Kentucky, in 1793, but has lived in Indiana since 1824. Monroe Hedges was 105 years of age on the 11th of last February, and he looks it. He has been a cripple for fifteen years, and is scarcely able to move. Mentally, however, he is active and he sees the bright side of life. He is poor and lives with his eight-year-old wife and two sons. He is a Kentuckian by birth.
[article continues with descriptions of Julia (Owens) Hamilton, age 100; and David Lynch, age 119, who died recently.]

Capt. P.T. Hedges Dies In Illinois
Deceased Was Father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, Pastor of Christian Church.
Capt. P.T. Hedges, aged ninety-three years, five months and seven days, died at his home in Danville, Ill., Thursday of last week. He was a father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, pastor of the First Christian church of Thomas.
Rev. Hedges left here June the 10th and arrived in Danville at 1 p.m. the following day. His father knew him and conversed with his son regarding that he would be kept on the go to return to Thomas in time to preach the following Sunday. Mr. Hedges emphasized the fact that he wished his son to carry on his preaching, consequently when Mr. Hedges died the Rev. Hedges left Danville and arrived home Saturday and delivered a sermon Sunday morning at a joint meeting of Thomas and Hydro Christian churches which was held on Bear creek.
Rev. A.A. Hedges of Hydro occupied the pulpit of the local Christian church Sunday night.

6761 LKH note: Both her parents and her brother are buried at Fern Park Cemetery. There is an entry and a photograph of the headstone for her mother, Ina Hedges, that shows that headstone has several cracks. It is possible that Kathryn's stone is no longer standing.

Hedges, Kathryn Fern (I118)

Lydle, Ethel Frances (I4634)

6772 LKH Note: From a letter written by George F. Hedges on 11 February 1948 we know that in 1881 William R. and Sarah L. Hedges moved their family from Fleming County, Kentucky to a small farm southwest of Fairmount, Vermilion County, Illinois. In three years they moved to Champaign County, Illinois and then in 1891 they and most of their children moved to Linn County, Missouri.

6777 LKH note: I believe Ambrose's birth given as June 1894 on Find a Grave is incorrect. It should be May 1894.

The birth listed in the Indianapolis Journal in May 1984 matches Ambrose Hedges who died eight months later in February 1895.

Hedges, Ambrose (I4625)

6778 LKH note: I believe that W.F. Hedges, the "cousin by marriage", named as executor in Joseph Steenrod's will is William Franklin Hedges.

William Franklin Hedges (1845-1932) married Malinda Demaree (1865-1885), the daughter of Jacob Demeree (1840-1865) and Melissa Lucinda Hedges (1838-1899). Melissa’s second marriage was to Joseph Steenrod and they had four children including Hattie and Albert named in Joseph's will.

Melissa was the sister of William’s father, Addison Hedges. So she was William’s aunt.

Steenrod, Joseph (I397)

6779 LKH note: I can't find any news article about Minnie's death, but when her sister, Fanny, also died of typhoid fever in March, the article states it is the second death due to typhoid in that family.

Died, at the residence of her father, three miles southwest of town, of typhoid fever, Miss Fanny McClanahan. This is the second death in the family of that dreadful disease in two months.
Owingsville Outlook, Owingsville, Kentucky. Thursday, 3 March 1898.

McClanahan, Minnie Belle (I473)

6780 LKH note: I find no other records of Rosanna other than MHR listing her among Levi and Rosannah's children. Some family trees on Ancestry give her birth and death date both as 1803, but offer no documentation.

In accounting for the ages of family members who should be in Levi's household in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 US census, it appears that Rosanna could have died as an infant in 1803.
Hedges, Rosanna (I447)

6781 LKH note: In the 1865 Kansas census, Griselle Holland, b. about 1808, Kentucky, is in the household of Lawrence and Malinda Wheeler. I believe that Griselle is Malinda's widowed mother.
Griselle Holland (1808-1874) is buried in the same cemetery as Lawrence and Malinda Wheeler. And their eldest daughter is named Griselle.

Priest, Malinda (I2185)

6782 LKH Note: In the census taken 7 Jan 1920, the sisters Minnie, Lillie, and Tina Ward are incorrectly listed with the surname of Moody. They are in the household of their grandmother Ivelia (Hedges) Moody. Ivelia's brother John Hedges is also part of the household and is incorrectly listed as John Moody. The census taker assumed everyone shared Ivelia's surname of Moody.

Hedges, Ivelia Jane (I514)

By 1920, Marie and William Henry Beagles had married. They lived in San Francisco along with Jeanette, age 18, and Marie's mother, Phillisse Wolf (unknown maiden name, born in France about 1845).

6793 LKH note: Monroe's age and certain facts about his life change in different news articles.

Whipped His Baby
Monroe Hedges, 106 years old, whipped his 80-year-old son Hiram at Indianapolis the other day and placed him in the hands of surgeons. The father lives in a little house in Anderson, Ind. He claims the distinction of being the man who drove the first spike on the first railway ever constructed in Indiana. His 89-year-old wife died recently. His strength and metal activity war something marvelous. Hiram was one of the babies of the family.
