| 6303 | James "JW" Smith, 85, of Colona, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schroder Mortuary in Colona, with visitation one hour before service time. The family requests everyone please dress casual. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Memorials may be made to the family. James was born May 6, 1928, in Purdin, Mo., the son of James W. Sr. and Leathia Bagley Smith. He married Mayetta Mossbarger on Aug. 10, 1948, in Brookfield, Mo. James was a rodeo rider for 10 years and also farmed for 12 years while working for John Deere for 29 1/2 years until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed camping, fishing and riding snowmobiles and motorcycles. Survivors include his wife, Mayetta, Colona; children, Linda (Mike Seibert) Waddell, Andover, Donald (Diana) Smith, Colona, and Charlie Smith, Colona; grandchildren, Donny and Nick Smith, Amy Dothard, Carla Johnson and Lori and Kelly Waddell; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one great-great-grandchild on the way; and sisters, Norma Abbott and Janet Wingate, both of Missouri, and Judy Watson, of Colona. | 6305 | James Alsip, 82, Dies March 13 in New York Funeral Services Sunday at Ford-Baier Home James (Eph) Alsip, 82, of Loda died at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, March 13, 1956 at the Norwich Memorial hospital in Norwich, N.Y., where he had been a patient for a month. Mr. Alsip was spending the winter months in the East and had expected to return to Loda sometime in February when he became ill. The body was shipped from New York to the Ford-Baier funeral home in Paxton, where services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18. Rev. Farris Roberts, pastor of the First Methodist church in Loda, officiated. Burial was in the Loda Pine Ridge cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Pallbearers were Robert Currie, Chester West, Fred Nordstrom, Ferd Marshall, Louis Caspers and Addison Goodell. Mrs. Arthur Aikman, vocalist, was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Russell Drechsler. Burial was in Loda’s Pine Ridge cemetery. Mr. Alsip was born May 24, 1873 near Odgen. Most of his life was spent at Loda where he farmed for a number of years. He was a member of A. Jonas Lodge #316 A.F.A.M. of Loda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida. Surviving are four sons, Richard of Loda, Gene of Lohrville, Ia., Ralph of Middleburg, N.Y., and Orville of South New Berlin, N.Y. Obituary James Alvia Hedges, the subject of this sketch, was born September 14, 1843, in Fleming county, Kentucky, and died at Lakeview hospital at Danville Nov. 3, 1921, age 78 years, one month and nineteen days. He was the son of William R. and Malinda Hedges. He spent his boyhood days in Kentucky. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the 10th Indiana Cavalry, Co. A, serving one years, receiving an honorable discharge. Later he went to Kentucky and enlisted in the 10th Indiana cavalry, and served 2 years being discharge at the close of the war. Returning to his native state, he married Miss Philora Allen, Dec 26, 1865, who survives him. For fifty seven years they trod the pathway of life together. They came to Illinois in 1870, and lived two years, returning to Kentucky. In 1880 they came again to Illinois, settling on a farm near Homer. About twenty years ago they moved to their home in Allerton. To this union ten children were born, four preceding him in death. Those living are Mrs. Eva I. Clifton of Moneta, Ia.; Mrs. Serona D. Ellis of Mason, Ind; Mrs. Ada Smith of Ames neighborhood; Isaac Hedges of Spencer, Ia; Mrs. Lottie Clester of this place and George Hedges of Palmer, Ia. He leaves a large number of grand and great grandchildren. Peter Hedges of Canton, Mo; W.R. Hedges of Purdin Mo, and Mrs. R.S. Gilkison of Catlin are living brothers and sister. In early manhood he became a follower of Jesus Christ, and united with the Christian church. It may be truly said that he lived a consistent christian life. He was a faithful attendant of services at churches in Allerton when in health. Mr. Hedges had been failing in health for a number of years ad all that medical skill and loving tender care could do to alleviate his pain and prolong life was of no avail. Through all he was patient, always trusting Him who doeth the best, and he is at home in that land where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in this place Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J.M. Beane of Danville, assisted by A.R. Wassell and Rev. | 6307 | James and Philora Hedges family James was born in Kentucky in 1843. When he was 18 he enlisted in the Home Guard, serving a year. He enlisted in the 19th Kentucky Calvary serving 13 months. He then enlisted in the 10th Indiana Calvary serving until the end of the war. He married Philora Allen from Kentucky. In 1871 they moved to Illinois, later returning to Kentucky for a short time. They had seven children, Eva Clifton, Dee Ellis, Ada Smith, Lottie Clester, Ike, Russell and George. In 1901 they moved to Allerton and purchased the dray business. His youngest son, George, assisted him. They met the train daily and delivered the Cargo. They, also, had a poultry business. He was a very honest and genial man. They lived on Green Street. Philora was a very religious person and often quoted scriptures to one and all. She loved to smoke a corn cob pipe and often used her son, George as a lookout. The minister called and as a joke, George let him into the smoke filled room. Punishment was severe. Their son Russell left home to look for work but never returned or heard from again. They kept a lighted lamp in the window for many years. George went to Iowa and married Bertha Juluis, a German Lutheran girl from Palmer, Iowa. They had one daughter, Sophia (Hedges) Larrance, Indianola, Illinois. Ada Smith and Lottie Clester settled in or near Allerton. The other children lived in Indiana and Iowa. | 6308 | James Andrew Cassity, 70 years old, died at his home at the Avalon Apartments at 4:45 o’clock Friday morning, after an illness of five years. Mr. Cassity was born near Purdin. He came to Mexico from Topeka, Kans., where he was a railroad insurance writer for the Continental Casualty Company of Chicago. He had been a resident of Mexico for the past five years. Short services were held for James A. Cassity who died at his home, 203 West Love street, Friday morning, at the McPheeter Chapel Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The Rev. George A. Hammon, pastor of the First Baptist church of Mexico, officiating and music was furnished by Mrs. George Hammon and Mrs. John Felgar. On Sunday afternoon, funeral services were held at Purdin and burial was in the family lot in the cemetery there. Service were conducted by the pastor of the First Baptist church of Linneus. Mr. Dalton was a press operator and belonged to the Typographical Union and the Methodist church. | 6312 | JAMES DOYLE (1943-2019) James “June” H. Doyle, Jr., 75 of Flemingsburg, passed away peacefully Monday, January 7, 2019, at Hospice of Hope at Kenton Pointe in Maysville surrounded by his beloved family. He was born February 8, 1943, in Fleming County to the late James Howard and Mary Isabelle Parker Doyle. James was a retired foreman of Brownings/Emerson in Maysville where he was employed for 35 years. After he retired in 2004, he took over the park manager position at Fox Valley Recreation Park, which he was still doing until recent months. James loved the campground and was dedicated to its upkeep. Visitors could always count on finding him sitting on the front porch in his rocking chair waving to them upon their arrival. James never met a stranger and he was always ready to share his campfire with any camper or visitor. When James wasn’t managing the campground, he enjoyed camping with his sons or vacationing with his family in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, his favorite home away from home. James rode motorcycles until just a few years ago and was instrumental in organizing many successful charity rides for families in their time of need. One of his greatest passions, after his love for family, was cooking. He loved cooking over the open fire and enjoyed preparing foods for his family and friends. James was a member of Flemingsburg Christian Church. Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Wanda Toller Doyle; a daughter, Mary Jayne (David) Watson; identical twin sons, Ronald Wayne (Melody) Doyle, and Donald Layne (Jill) Doyle; six grandchildren, J.P. Doyle, Ethan Doyle, Nathan (Jenna) Doyle, Allie Doyle, Kinsey Watson, and Hazy Varney; two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Alayna Varney; brothers, Lloyd (Darlene) Doyle and Larry (Brenda) Doyle; sisters, Jean Hester and Shirley (Taylor) Williams; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and lifelong friends. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by: his oldest granddaughter, Candi Watson Varney; great-grandson, Waylon Jacob Varney; an infant sister, Letha Doyle; sister, Joan Doyle Toller; and two brothers-in-law, Clayton Hester and Charles Toller. Anderson former Washington State University retirement and insurance officer, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Episcopal Church in Pullman, where he was a member. Burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery with Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman in charge. Mr. Anderson, 75, died Saturday at the Pullman Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack. Born in Minnesota, he studied engineering and business administration at the University of Minnesota. He worked as a senior accountant in Minnesota and Alaska and then was business manager at the Farragut college at the Farragut Naval Station in Idaho from 1946 until coming to Pullman in 1949. A 24-year WSU employee, Mr. Anderson started in administration as an internal auditor in 1949. He then managed the budget office and later the retirement and insurance office before retiring in 1973. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a former member of the Masonic Lodge and Pullman Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Esther, at the home in Pullman; two sons, Kip Anderson of Seattle and Christopher Anderson of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Penny Anderson of Stockton, Calif.; two brothers; one sister; and six grandchildren. | 6314 | James E. Moody, 91 Mount Summit, Ind. – James Ernest Moody, 91, 104 S. Walnut St., died Thursday in Oakwood Health Care Center, New Castle, after a brief illness. Mr. Moody retired from Brooks Foods, Mount Summit, in 1965. He also worked 8 years as a custodian for the Mount Summit Elementary School. He was a member of the Meat Cutters Union. Surviving are three daughters, Edith (Mrs. Ted) Moore, Morehead, Ky., Grace (Mrs. Dan) Thompson, Sebring, Fla., and Vada (Mrs. Marvin) Collins, Mount Summit; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson. His wife, Mary Moody, died in 1985. Three sons, Oral, Verle and Harlen Moody, two sisters, Lula Shively and Lella Atchison, and a brother, Henry Moody, also are deceased. | 6315 | James Edward Hedges, 81, Lebanon, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1932, in Whitestown, to Francis C. (Cleve) Hedges and Edna Cochran. He married Susie Ellen Lewis in Whitestown in December 1953, and she survives. Mr. Hedges served in the Korean Conflict in the Army and in Germany from 1952-1956. He worked for Belmar Machine Shop in Whitestown and then for Noble Ratts Auctioneering. He worked for Lebanon I.G.A. for 20 years and then at Lewin Family Farms. He loved fishing and camping and took great pride in his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved maintaining his home and yard and tinkering with projects and repairs. Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Woodall of Lebanon; a son, Ted (Jean Mason) Hedges of Lebanon; grandchildren, Zach Woodall, Jake Woodall, Aaron Hedges, Joshua Hedges and Sawyer Hedges, all of Lebanon, Nichola Mason of Noblesville and Spencer Mason of Brownsburg; and great-grandchildren Kaylee and Corbin Leander. One of Northern California’s best known pioneers was claimed by death Sunday night when James Henry Clark passed away at the Landis Sanitarium in Chico Vecino shortly after 9 o’clock. He had been ill several years. Clark was sixty-seven years old. He was born in Independence, Mo., in 1948, and came to California when still a youth. His parents and family settled on a ranch in the Napa valley near Napa. When Clark came to Butte county after leaving the Napa valley, he continued ranching. He farmed on the Stanford, Phelan and Glenn ranches. Until four years ago he personally conducted his business and was known widely for his business methods, which were always above criticism. At one time he was in the employ of the United States Plant Introduction Gardens in Chico. The widow and a son, Beverly Clark of Oakland, survive, Mrs. A.E. Inman of Napa was an aunt. Mrs. Clark and the son arrived in Chico from Oakland yesterday. The funeral will be held in Napa. Services will be conducted at the First Christian church of that city. | 6322 | James Howard "Buck" Harless, 94, of Gilbert, W. Va., passed away peacefully Wednesday night, January 1, 2014 surrounded by his wife Hallie and family. He was born October 14, 1919 in Taplin, W. Va. to Bessie Brown Harless and her husband Pearly J. Soon after his birth, his mother died of pneumonia, and he was taken in and raised by his mother's sister, Rosa, and her husband, George Erastis "Ras" Ellis of Gilbert. When he was young, he was given the nickname "Buster" and townspeople referred to him as Buster Ellis. It was later that he came to be known as Buck Harless. Throughout his life he cherished the love and support he received from Ras and Rosa Ellis, whom he considered his mom. He attended Gilbert public schools and graduated high school in 1937. During that time, his first real job was working for George Crago who operated a garage and wrecker service in Gilbert. He learned from George Crago a business philosophy of trust, honor and commitment to excellence through hard work and dedication to customer satisfaction. A child of the Great Depression, he yearned to attend college but was unable to fulfill that dream for lack of money. On February 25, 1939, he eloped with his high school sweetheart, June Montgomery, the beginning of a marriage that spanned 60 years and produced two children, Larry Joe and Judy. June Harless died in April of 1999. In the early years of their marriage, he worked at Red Jacket Coal Corporation, first as a laborer and later in its engineering department. In 1947, he was offered an opportunity to own a one-third interest in a small sawmill that was doomed to failure without proper management and operation. Naively, he dedicated himself to the task, bought out his partners in short order, and made a success of the operation. This was the beginning of what was to become International Industries, Inc., a collection of diverse companies with a worldwide imprint. On January 23, 1955, a day begun with his feeling utterly alone and lost, ended in tranquility and a sense of redemption when he opened his heart to the Lord at the Gilbert Presbyterian Church. No other event had such a profound, lasting impact on his life. In 1966 Georgia Pacific Corporation purchased his lumber operations making him a multimillionaire at age 47. Rather than retire, he acted on the suggestion of his son Larry, who worked with is father, to operate sawmills in South America. Against substantial odds, they succeeded where multinational companies failed. In the 1970s, along with friends—among them Fred Shewey and Frank Allara—he entered the coal business in southern West Virginia. The timing was fortuitous because the price of coal soared to record highs, ensuring business success and adding greatly to his personal wealth. He also added multi state manufacturing and real estate businesses to his enterprise family. Even though he oversaw wide-ranging business interests, he served his church, community and state with dedication and commitment. He served on numerous boards and civic organizations. He supported West Virginia University and Marshall University in substantial ways. He provided many with the opportunity to attend college. While his philanthropic activities are well noted, the breadth and depth is known to but a few because he did not seek favor through his actions, but rather he tried to make a difference and use his wealth to serve the greater good. Former President George W. Bush credited Buck Harless with his election to the nation's highest office, because Buck cast the 270th electoral vote providing the margin of victory in the Electoral College. Over the years, Buck Harless amassed a legion of friends, all of whom he held dearly in his heart. He considered friendship the most valuable thing that a person could have, and he felt more blessed with friends than with monetary wealth. Preceding him in death were his first wife, June; son, Larry, infant granddaughter, Shera Elizabeth; brother, Fred, and sister, Mae Morris; half brothers, Milton, Frank, Pearly J. "Bud", Jr., and Marshall Ray; half sisters, Marie Mace, Lucille Fortner and Betty Jo Collins; stepdaughter, Racina Chapman; and best friend, Fred Shewey. Jim was born at home in Kennett, Missouri, on February 25, 1932 to Andrew Farris Harding and Elsie Jeannette Harper Harding. Jim had an older brother, Dr. Joe Andrew Harding. Jim spent his early life growing up in Kennett and working in his dad’s grocery store. He graduated from Kennett High School. Following high school, he attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, and later transferred to the University of Missouri where he received a bachelor’s degree in business. He volunteered for the US Army and served two years overseas from 1954-56. He then attended graduate school at Southern Methodist University. In 1957, after one year at graduate school, Jim was hired by the General American Life Insurance Company in St. Louis. In 1974 he purchased Cloy Whitney’s insurance business and moved to Kirksville, Missouri. He resided there until his move to The Bluffs in Columbia in November of 2016. Jim was a Certified Life Underwriter. Throughout his successful 60-year career with General American he won numerous sales awards and became a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kirksville where he was actively involved and sang in the choir. He also sang in the community chorus. Jim was a member of the Shrine Club, Rotary Club, Stock club, and Saddle club. He supported many local charities, including Truman State and ATSU. Jim was an avid tennis play, walker and played various sports throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling, reading, theater, gardening, playing board games and cards, and spending time with his wife and family. | 6325 | James Noah Shouptaugh was born in Rockport, Indiana, November 12, 1836. He came to Missouri on horseback in 1855, at the age of 19 years; stayed out here only a few months and returned to Indiana and came the second time by boat in 1857, locating at Williamstown. November 12, 1861, he was married to Sarah Daugherty in Canton, Missouri, by Rev. W.B. Moody. To this union were born eleven children, one son and ten daughters. He united with the M.E. church in 1865, under the ministry of Rev. Gardner. His father was one of the pioneers in the organization and building of the M.E. church at Williamstown, at which place the funeral services were held, conducted by his pastor, F.J. Young of La Belle. In 1866 he moved to the farm, one and a half miles north of Williamstown, where he spent the remainder of his life. He departed this life October 13, 1915. There is left to mourn his loss a wife, one son and seven daughters. | 6343 | Jas A. Hedges James Alva Hedges, a well known and highly respected citizen of Purdin, passed away Tuesday August 5, at the home of his daughter Mrs. O.N. Smith in Purdin, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 26 days. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O.N. Smith and Mrs. W.A. Creason, both of Purdin, and one son, Wm. M. Hedges of Ottumwa, Iowa; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, four brothers, G.F. Hedges, Fairmount, Iowa; P.T. Hedges of Matchitoches, La.; J.W. Hedges of Purdin, and J.N. Hedges of Riverside, Wyo.; two sisters Mrs. Anna Bagley of Purdin and Mrs. Mary Wood of Rockport, Texas. – Leader Record. Funeral services are being held this (Thursday) afternoon at the Church of Christ in Purdin, conducted by R.C. Yadon. ELLIS, farmer of near Macy, was fatally injured at 10:00 o'clock this morning when his 1926 Ford was struck by a fast Nickle Plate freight train at the railroad crossing at the north edge of Macy. The injured man was taken into Macy and died at 11:10 o'clock this morning. His injuries consisted of fractures of both legs, both arms and back. His car was carried 200 feet down the track by the train engine, and was then overturned, crushing him. Mr. Ellis' wife, Serona ELLIS, died on Sept. 5, 1942. Surviving are one son, Clarence ELLIS, of near Macy; and two grandchildren, Martha ELLIS, at home and Bob ELLIS, Fort Wayne. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. The Rochester Sentinel. Tuesday, July 20, 1943. * * * * * * * Funeral services will be held at the Macy Christian church at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon for Jasper Ed ELLIS, 79, who was killed late yesterday morning when his car was struck by a Nickle Plate freight train at the Macy crossing. Burial will be made in the Plainview cemetery and the body will be taken to the home at seven o'clock tonight, when friends may call. Ellis was enroute to the grain mill at Millark when the accident occurred. The crossing is on a grade, and it is supposed that he failed to see the approaching train until too late. He had lived alone near Macy since his wife died last September. | 6345 | Jean Hedges Rites Today Services for Mrs. Jean Hedges, 76, of 1618 Fairmount, will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Central Christian Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. She died Monday. A lifetime Wichita resident, she worked as a Red Cross volunteer, involved in transcribing reading material into Braille, from 1965 to 1971. Her husband, Rev. Arthur, died in 1965. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Thayne Hedges, Enid, Okla., and Howard L. Hedges, Wichita; a daughter, Mrs. Thabine Maytum, Wichita, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Ash, Wichita. Gill Mortuary has charge. | 6346 | Jeanne "Betty" E. Spaulding 85, Indianapolis, formerly of Mooresville, passed away Friday, September 21, 2007. She was born October 12, 1921 in Indianapolis to the late Raymond and Lottis Otis Edwards. Betty married Robert T. Spaulding on March 19, 1937 in Indianapolis. He passed away on May 16, 2002. Survivors include daughters, Jeanne Spaulding, Sandborn, Suellen Wood, Sandborn, Rebecca Shannon, Coatesville and Karen (Bill) Patterson, Indianapolis; sons, Wallace (Jane) Spaulding, Mooresville and Phillip (Cindy) Spaulding, Gosport; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Hudson and Ruby Barrett. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 25 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 24 at the mortuary. | 6348 | Jerald Fieseler Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawncrest Chapel for Jerald D. Fieseler of Redding, who died Saturday at Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 49. Burial will be in Lawncrest Memorial Park. The Rev. Glen W. Parks will officiate. A native of Woodward, Iowa, Fieseler was born Aug. 16, 1926. He was a veteran of World War II and had worked in construction. He had been a resident of Shasta County for 15 years. Crouch Born: Jan. 7, 1928; in Bluford, IL Died: Oct. 30, 2014; in DeKalb, IL Jeremiah Thomas "Tom" Crouch, 86, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 30, 2014, at home. Born January 7, 1928, in Bluford, Illinois, the son of Charles and Blanch (Orrick) Crouch, Tom married Mary L. Shields on June 9, 1957 in DeKalb. Tom was a Veteran of the US Army Air Corps serving during WWII. Tom was a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union 150; he enjoyed lawn care, gardening, and traveling. Tom was an avid sports fan especially for the Chicago sports teams. He is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Richard Crouch of DeKalb; daughters, Karen (Dennis) Pepe' of Katy, Texas, Dawn (Jeffrey) Harris of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Brandon Crouch, Adrianna Pepe'; step grandchildren; Charles and Lacey Vanderbilt; his twin brother, William Crouch of Sycamore; three sisters, Eleanor Gregory, Mary Border, Ruthann Deleaney; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Melville, Charles, Kenneth; five sisters, Hattie Rapp, Ada Jackson, Dorothy Finn, Elfreda Ellis, Marcella Parks; three brothers, John and Glenn Crouch, Eugene Weaver; and sister, Wintress Sheilds. | 6350 | Jerry Floyd Murdock, 69, of rural Perry, died at his home April 11, 2014. He was born May 27, 1944 in Centralia, Kansas the son of Edward Nolan and Fern Vivian Cassity Murdock. He graduated high school in 1962 in Bern, KS., He worked in Construction all of his life and was a scrap salvage man for Langley's of Topeka. He was a member of the Heavy Equipment Operators Local 101 of Kansas City, MO., and the Laborers Union 142 of Topeka. Jerry served in the Kansas National Guard in 1964 to 1969. He attended the Perry United Methodist Church. He married Dana Jean Ketron in Topeka, KS., She survives of the home. Other survivors include one son, Jerry W. Murdock (Mary Kay Carolla) and two daughters Lisa A. (Duff) Taylor, Lewisville, TX., and Mary (Chris) Erickson, Perry, KS., three brothers, Carol Murdock, Iatan, MO., Ray Murdock, Silver Lake, KS,. Alan Murdock, Farley, MO, and one sister, Jean Greenwade, Milford, NE., Five Grandchildren, Shelby, Jordan and Tyler Erickson and Laura and Ashlyn Taylor.
